Short answer: The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the best 2026 AWD sedan for luxury comfort, the BMW 3 Series is the best all-around sport sedan, and the Kia K5 GT-Line AWD is the best mainstream value. The Mazda3 sedan is the compact-value pick, the Lexus IS 350 AWD preserves traditional V6 character, the Genesis G70 is the premium alternative, and the Toyota Crown is the most distinctive hybrid AWD choice.
This U.S.-market ranking covers verified 2026-model-year sedans and sedan-like alternatives. Because AWD is often limited to a particular trim or engine, the relevant price is the price of the AWD configuration—not the cheapest front-wheel-drive version. Tires also matter: AWD can help with acceleration and traction, but it does not replace winter tires or safe driving on snow and ice.

Our 2026 picks: The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the best AWD sedan for luxury comfort, the BMW 3 Series is the best all-around sport sedan, and the Kia K5 GT-Line AWD is the strongest mainstream value. The Mazda3 sedan, Lexus IS 350, Genesis G70, and Toyota Crown each make a better case for a specific type of buyer than for everyone.

How these AWD sedans were rated
The ranking combines verified manufacturer specifications and pricing with the comparative categories used by Car and Driver: acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value, and enjoyment. It is a buyer-fit ranking rather than a claim that every car was tested by the writer or that the cars share the same price class.
The most important rating distinction is AWD availability. A sedan that offers AWD only on an expensive trim may be a poor value for someone who simply wants winter traction. Conversely, a well-equipped AWD luxury sedan can still be the right choice if comfort and refinement matter more than purchase price.
1. Mercedes-Benz E-Class: best AWD sedan for luxury comfort
The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the strongest choice for buyers who want a quiet, polished, long-distance luxury sedan and are willing to pay for it. Car and Driver places it first among the AWD sedans in its current comparison, and Mercedes-Benz offers three relevant 4MATIC sedan variants: the E 350 4MATIC, E 450 4MATIC, and AMG E 53 Hybrid.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- E 350 4MATIC: starts at $66,400 and uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged mild-hybrid inline-four making 255 horsepower.
- E 450 4MATIC: starts at $72,300 and adds a higher-performance powertrain.
- AMG E 53 Hybrid: starts at $89,600 and is the performance-oriented, plug-in-hybrid-derived AMG choice in this group.
The E 350 pairs its engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Mercedes describes the 4MATIC system as always engaged and able to optimize torque to each wheel. That is useful in rain, snow, and on slippery roads, but it is not a promise of unlimited grip: available traction still depends on the road surface and tires.
Why buy it: The E-Class is the right answer when cabin refinement, technology, ride quality, and highway comfort outrank low ownership cost. It also gives buyers a wider range of powertrains than most cars here.
Why not: Its price puts it in a different class from the Kia K5, Mazda3, and Toyota Camry. Paying for 4MATIC also does not remove the need for appropriate tires or careful winter driving.
Best fit: A luxury buyer who regularly drives long distances, wants a traditional sedan, and views AWD as one part of a broader comfort and confidence package.
2. BMW 3 Series: best all-around sport sedan
The 2026 BMW 3 Series is the default recommendation for someone who wants an engaging compact luxury sedan without giving up everyday usability. The 330i xDrive combines a compact footprint with 255 horsepower, a manufacturer-estimated 5.4-second 0-to-60-mph time, and a $50,000 starting MSRP before applicable charges.
Compared with the E-Class, the 3 Series is smaller, less expensive, and more focused on nimble handling. Compared with the Mazda3, it offers a more thoroughly premium experience and a stronger performance identity, but at a substantial price increase. Car and Driver ranks the 2026 3 Series fourth in its overall AWD-sedan list while describing it as a strong all-around sports sedan; our second-place recommendation reflects its unusually broad appeal rather than a claim that it wins every test category.
Why buy it: The 330i xDrive is a balanced choice for drivers who value steering and handling, compact dimensions, premium-brand appeal, and usable acceleration.
Why not: It is not the cheapest AWD sedan, nor is it the obvious choice for maximum rear-seat space or the softest luxury ride.

3. Kia K5 GT-Line AWD: best mainstream value
The Kia K5 GT-Line AWD is the best value choice among the clearly priced mainstream AWD sedans in this guide. Kia lists a $27,490 starting MSRP for the 2026 K5 range, but the relevant AWD price is the $30,090 starting MSRP for the GT-Line AWD. That distinction matters: the lower number is not the cost of an AWD K5.
The K5 is a midsize family sedan with more space and a more conventional family-car role than the Mazda3. Car and Driver characterizes the 2026 K5 as value-oriented while giving it some driving personality. The GT-Line AWD is the trim to look for when all-weather traction is the priority.
Do not confuse the GT-Line AWD with the higher-performance GT. The names are similar, but the GT-Line AWD is the configuration specifically identified by Kia’s build information as an AWD model. Buyers should verify the drivetrain, equipment, and availability for the exact dealer vehicle rather than assuming every K5 has AWD.
Why buy it: It gives shoppers a new AWD sedan at a materially lower price than the BMW, Lexus, Genesis, and Mercedes-Benz alternatives, while retaining the space and practicality expected of a family sedan.
Why not: It does not provide the premium cabin or performance identity of the luxury cars, and AWD is trim-specific rather than universal across the K5 lineup.
Best fit: A family buyer who wants a new, reasonably affordable AWD sedan and is willing to confirm that the vehicle is specifically a GT-Line AWD.
4. Mazda3 sedan: best compact AWD value
The 2026 Mazda3 sedan is the compact alternative for shoppers who want a smaller car with upscale design and a more driver-oriented feel. Mazda lists i-Activ AWD on selected trims, including the 2.5 S Carbon Edition and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus. The available turbocharged sedan makes up to 250 horsepower.

It should not be used as the price of an AWD Mazda3. The AWD price depends on the selected trim, and shoppers should check the current Mazda configurator or window sticker before comparing it with the $30,090 K5 GT-Line AWD.
The Mazda3’s strengths are its compact exterior dimensions, upscale-feeling interior design, and available turbo-AWD combination. Its compromises are equally important: it is not a full-size or midsize family sedan, so rear-seat and cargo needs should be assessed in person before purchase.
Why buy it: It is a compelling choice for a single driver, couple, or small household that prefers a compact car and does not need the K5’s larger-sedan role.
Why not: The lowest advertised price is FWD, AWD is limited to selected trims, and the most powerful turbo configuration costs more than the base sedan.
Best fit: A buyer who wants compact dimensions, distinctive styling, and an available turbo-AWD setup rather than maximum passenger space.

5. Lexus IS 350 AWD: best traditional V6 character
The 2026 Lexus IS 350 AWD is the choice for buyers who specifically want a conventional V6 sport sedan. Its 3.5-liter V6 produces 311 horsepower. Lexus offers the AWD versions with a six-speed automatic transmission and a rear-biased AWD system that the company says is intended to improve confidence across seasons.
Pricing starts at $48,895 for the F SPORT Design AWD and $51,345 for the F SPORT AWD. Those are the useful comparison points; quoting the lower price of a rear-wheel-drive IS would understate the cost of the AWD model.
The IS 350 stands apart from newer hybridized four-cylinder competitors with its naturally distinctive V6 character and more old-school mechanical formula. The six-speed AWD automatic is also a deliberate contrast with the nine-speed, hybrid-assisted, or more heavily electrified powertrains elsewhere in this ranking.
Why buy it: The IS 350 AWD delivers a traditional sport-sedan layout, a naturally aspirated-style V6 character, conventional controls, and Lexus’s familiar premium-brand approach.
Why not: Its powertrain philosophy is older-school, and buyers seeking the latest electrification, maximum cabin space, or lowest price have better alternatives.
Best fit: A driver who values engine character and a familiar, conventional luxury-sport-sedan experience more than having the newest drivetrain technology.
6. Genesis G70: best premium compact alternative
The 2026 Genesis G70 is a strong alternative for shoppers who want a premium compact sedan with a substantial feature list and a less-common badge than BMW, Mercedes-Benz, or Lexus. Genesis lists verified AWD configurations including the 2.5T AWD at $45,550 and the 3.3T Sport Prestige AWD at $55,600, before destination pricing.
Equipment changes for 2026 include AWD-specific packaging and updates such as heated-steering-wheel availability on the 2.5T AWD and higher trims. That detail illustrates why trim-level research matters with the G70: the difference between the entry AWD version and the 3.3T Sport Prestige AWD is large, and equipment varies substantially by grade.
Why buy it: The G70 offers a premium compact format, performance-oriented engine choices, and a generous equipment story without following the most common luxury-sedan path.
Why not: Pricing rises quickly with trim, and the equipment and powertrain pairing must be confirmed rather than inferred from the G70 name alone.
Best fit: A buyer who wants a compact luxury sedan with strong available hardware and distinctive branding, but does not need the Mercedes-Benz E-Class’s larger-car comfort.

The 2026 Toyota Crown is best understood as a sedan alternative rather than a direct substitute for a low-slung BMW 3 Series or Lexus IS. It has a raised driving position and a liftback-style profile, combining sedan proportions with some of the visual and seating-position traits that have made crossovers popular.

Toyota’s 2026 brochure lists AWD on the XLE, Limited, and Nightshade grades. The Crown uses a standard 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain, while the higher-output Hybrid MAX uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter hybrid system.
The Crown makes sense for someone who wants hybrid power and AWD in a car-shaped vehicle without moving to an SUV. Its unusual body and seating position are advantages for some buyers and deal-breakers for others. Sit in one and check the rear-seat, cargo-opening, and driving-position compromises before treating it like a conventional sedan.
Why buy it: It offers a distinctive high-riding sedan-like format, hybrid efficiency, and AWD availability on several grades.

Other 2026 AWD sedans worth checking
Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 6
Car and Driver’s current AWD-sedan comparison includes the Tesla Model 3 among its leading choices and also covers the Hyundai Ioniq 6. Both are important if you are considering an electric sedan, but the source ranking mixes 2026 and 2025 model-year entries where the current U.S. model-year information is not equally established.
Before including either in a final purchase comparison, verify the exact U.S. model year, AWD configuration, transaction price, charging equipment, and EPA range at the time of purchase. Those figures can vary by trim and can change more quickly than conventional sedan pricing. Because the exact 2026 details were not fully established in the supplied research, they are not assigned a firm position in the seven-car ranking above.

Genesis G80
The Genesis G80 is the larger luxury-sedan option for shoppers who like the G70’s approach but want more room and a more substantial car. Genesis lists a current U.S. starting MSRP of $58,450. AWD is part of the G80 lineup, but the exact 2026 U.S. AWD trim price and powertrain pairing should be checked in the current configurator or official trim sheet before quoting or comparing it.
Models that should not be counted as confirmed 2026 AWD sedans
Honda Accord
The 2026 Honda Accord should not be presented as an AWD sedan. Honda’s official 2026 trim comparison lists LX, SE, and hybrid trims without an AWD drivetrain. Its hybrid availability does not change that drivetrain limitation.
Acura TLX
The Acura TLX has official 2025 SH-AWD documentation, including a 355-horsepower Type S SH-AWD variant. However, a verified 2026 U.S. TLX model page was not established in this research. Treat the TLX as a prior-model-year or unresolved reference, not as a confirmed 2026 recommendation.

AWD may be optional, trim-limited, or engine-specific
Start with the exact vehicle, not the model name. The K5’s AWD version is the GT-Line AWD. The Mazda3 offers AWD only on selected trims. Lexus sells separate AWD versions of the IS 350. Genesis pairs AWD with particular G70 grades. Toyota lists AWD on specific Crown grades. Even within the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the relevant cars are the 4MATIC variants.
When comparing dealer listings, check the window sticker for drivetrain, engine, transmission, tire type, and destination charge. A listing that says only “K5,” “Mazda3,” or “G70” is not specific enough to establish AWD equipment or price.

Do not compare base-model prices with AWD prices
The most misleading comparison in this category is a table of each model’s lowest starting MSRP. The Mazda3’s $24,650 starting price is for the sedan range and does not represent an AWD car. Kia’s $27,490 K5 starting price is below the $30,090 GT-Line AWD price. By contrast, the quoted BMW, Lexus, Genesis, and Mercedes-Benz figures identify AWD variants.
Also budget for destination, taxes, registration, insurance, fuel or charging, tires, and maintenance. Before signing, it is sensible to compare car insurance quotes for the exact year, trim, location, driver profile, and coverage limits. AWD does not automatically produce a lower premium; insurers price the complete risk profile, not just the drivetrain.
AWD is not a substitute for winter tires
AWD can help a vehicle accelerate or maintain traction when some wheels have less grip. It does not shorten braking distances on ice, and it cannot overcome unsuitable tires, excessive speed, poor visibility, or a road surface with very little available traction.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Mercedes-Benz lists all-season Extended Mobility tires on the 2026 E 350 4MATIC and specifically states that the best snow performance comes with winter tires. That is a useful principle for every AWD sedan, not just the Mercedes.
- Mild climates: A high-quality all-season tire may be reasonable if it matches the vehicle’s specifications and your local conditions.
- Frequent snow or ice: Dedicated winter tires deserve serious consideration, even when the car has AWD.
- Tire replacement: Verify the vehicle year, make, model, trim, tire size, load index, speed rating, and whether the car uses run-flat or extended-mobility tires. If you shop for all-season tires for AWD sedans, do not choose by phrase alone; confirm fitment for the exact car.
- Replacing only one or two tires: Ask the manufacturer or qualified tire professional first. Some AWD systems require a matched set or closely matched tread depths, and substantially different tires can place stress on the drivetrain.
The right tire choice depends on the car and climate. There is no single tire model that is universally best for every AWD sedan, and a tire’s advertised all-season status does not make it equivalent to a dedicated winter tire in severe snow and ice.
Ground clearance and driver behavior still matter
Most AWD sedans sit lower than SUVs. AWD may help you get moving through a lightly snow-covered road, but it does not turn a sedan into a vehicle for deep snow, unplowed roads, or rough terrain. Leave extra following distance, reduce speed for visibility and surface conditions, and remember that all four driven wheels still have to stop.
Which AWD sedan should you buy?
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Quiet luxury and long-distance comfort | Mercedes-Benz E 350 4MATIC | The strongest comfort-focused package, with more powerful E 450 and AMG variants available. |
| Sport-sedan balance | BMW 330i xDrive | Compact dimensions, premium appeal, engaging performance, and daily usability. |
| The lowest clearly identified AWD price in this shortlist | Kia K5 GT-Line AWD | Its $30,090 starting MSRP is materially below the luxury alternatives. |
| A smaller, premium-leaning sedan | Mazda3 sedan with i-Activ AWD | Compact size, upscale design, and an available turbocharged AWD combination. |
| A conventional V6 | Lexus IS 350 AWD | 311-hp 3.5-liter V6, rear-biased AWD, and a six-speed automatic. |
| A less-common premium badge | Genesis G70 AWD | Compact luxury format and multiple AWD powertrain grades. |
| Hybrid power without an SUV | Toyota Crown | Hybrid power, AWD availability on listed grades, and a raised liftback-style body. |
Final buying checklist
- Confirm that the exact vehicle is a 2026 U.S.-market model.
- Confirm AWD on the window sticker or manufacturer build sheet, not just in a dealer headline.
- Compare AWD-trim MSRP, destination, and available equipment—not the model’s cheapest FWD price.
- Check the engine, transmission, tire size, and whether the vehicle uses run-flat or extended-mobility tires.
- Estimate insurance, fuel or charging, maintenance, and replacement-tire costs.
- Choose tires for the climate, and consider dedicated winter tires if snow and ice are routine.
- Test the rear seat, trunk or liftback opening, ride, visibility, and seating position with the people and cargo you actually carry.
- Get an insurance quote for the exact trim before treating the purchase price as the complete cost of ownership.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest 2026 AWD sedan?
The Kia K5 GT-Line AWD has the lowest clearly identified AWD starting price in this shortlist at $30,090. The Mazda3 sedan range starts lower at $24,650, but that is the FWD starting price; Mazda’s exact AWD price depends on trim. Verify destination and other charges before comparing final transaction prices.
Does the 2026 Honda Accord have AWD?
No. The 2026 Honda Accord is not a confirmed AWD sedan. Honda’s 2026 trim comparison lists LX, SE, and hybrid trims without an AWD drivetrain.
Is AWD enough for driving in snow?
AWD can help a sedan accelerate and maintain traction in some slippery conditions, but it does not shorten braking distances on ice. Tires, speed, visibility, road conditions, and driver behavior remain critical. Dedicated winter tires can provide better snow and ice performance than all-season tires, even on an AWD car.
Is the Toyota Crown a sedan?
The Toyota Crown is a sedan-like alternative with a raised driving position and liftback-style profile. Toyota’s 2026 brochure lists AWD on the XLE, Limited, and Nightshade grades. It is better viewed as a hybrid AWD alternative to an SUV than as a direct replacement for a low-slung sport sedan.
Which 2026 AWD sedan has a V6?
The 2026 Lexus IS 350 AWD uses a 3.5-liter V6 making 311 horsepower, a six-speed automatic transmission, and a rear-biased AWD system. It is the best choice in this group for buyers who specifically want traditional V6 character.
How do I choose replacement tires for an AWD sedan?
Check the exact year, make, model, trim, tire size, load index, speed rating, and whether the vehicle uses run-flat or extended-mobility tires. Also ask whether the manufacturer requires a matched set or closely matched tread depths when replacing tires on an AWD vehicle.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose the Mercedes-Benz E-Class for luxury, the BMW 3 Series for sport-sedan balance, the Kia K5 GT-Line AWD for mainstream value, the Mazda3 sedan for compact AWD value, the Lexus IS 350 AWD for V6 character, the Genesis G70 for premium compact performance, and the Toyota Crown for hybrid AWD distinction. In every case, verify the 2026 trim and price—and treat the tires as part of the winter-traction system, not an afterthought.
