There is no single automatic 4×4 transmission that is best for every off-road driver. For a specification-based choice focused on slow, controlled progress, the 2026 Ford Bronco has the clearest published automatic crawl-ratio figures: 57.19:1 with its standard transfer case and 67.80:1 with the optional Advanced 4×4 system. Those are Ford’s configuration-specific figures, not the result of a head-to-head trail test. The Jeep Wrangler and Toyota 4Runner offer relevant low-range and off-road control features, but the available sources do not provide directly comparable automatic crawl ratios for them.
What makes an automatic 4×4 good off-road?
The transmission matters, but it is only one part of the gearing that controls a vehicle at low speed. Crawl ratio combines the transmission’s first gear, the transfer case’s low-range ratio and the axle ratio. A larger overall ratio generally means the engine turns more times for each turn of the wheels, helping the vehicle move slowly with less reliance on throttle. It does not, by itself, establish traction, durability or which vehicle will perform best on a particular trail.
Compare complete, specific configurations rather than transmission gear counts alone. Also check the vehicle’s low-range equipment, four-wheel-drive modes, axle and locker availability, and any low-speed control features. A figure for a manual transmission is not an automatic-transmission comparison.

Which one suits your off-road use?
For published automatic low-speed gearing: Ford Bronco
The Bronco is the most straightforward choice if your priority is a published, configuration-specific automatic crawl ratio. Ford lists 57.19:1 for the standard transfer case and 67.80:1 for the optional Advanced 4×4 System. The higher figure belongs to that particular transfer-case configuration; it should not be treated as the ratio of every Bronco automatic.

Check the engine and transfer-case pairing on the actual vehicle. The 10-speed automatic is optional with the 2.3L and standard with the 2.7L and 3.0L engines, while the two transfer-case choices have different low ratios.
For transfer-case low-range choice: Jeep Wrangler
The Wrangler’s cited capability information describes two low-range options: 2.72:1 for Command-Trac and 4:1 for Rock-Trac. These figures describe transfer-case gearing, not a complete automatic crawl ratio. Jeep’s advertised up-to-100:1 crawl ratio is specifically for a manual transmission with an available 4.88:1 axle ratio, so it cannot be used to rank the Wrangler automatic against the Bronco’s automatic figures.
Rank #2
- Exceeds demands of automatic transmissions of most Chrysler, Dodge, Ram & other Stellantis vehicles
- High-efficiency conditioners protect and prolong the elasticity of seals, preventing leaks
- Advanced technology reduces wear, foaming, and oxidation while protecting transmission performance
- Superior high & low temp performance supports transmission fluid in all weather & driving situations
- Full synthetic formula with advanced additives protects against transmission breakdown better than conventional fluids
For low-speed control features: Toyota 4Runner 4WD
Toyota identifies a two-speed transfer case on 4WD versions and available CRAWL Control. Those are relevant features for off-road driving, but the cited announcement does not state a comparable automatic crawl ratio. The evidence supports a feature comparison, not a numerical gearing verdict against the Bronco.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare the exact vehicles you are considering
- Match the configuration. Record the model year, engine, trim, transmission, transfer case and axle ratio. Options and trim equipment can change the relevant figures.
- Look for the complete gearing information. Compare first gear, transfer-case low range and axle ratio together. If the manufacturer publishes a crawl ratio, verify that it applies to the same automatic and 4×4 configuration.
- Separate gearing from driver aids. A low-range ratio and a feature such as CRAWL Control are different things. Check which features the specific trim includes rather than assuming they are universal.
- Choose for the vehicle’s job. For technical trails, low-speed control and the exact 4×4 hardware matter. For mixed road use or overlanding, account for intended load and towing needs as well; gear count alone does not establish suitability.
- Confirm the build before purchase. Use the vehicle’s build sheet or current local-market specifications. Manufacturer pages can describe a range of trims and configurations rather than the equipment on a specific vehicle.
What the published figures do not prove
The cited specifications and capability pages are manufacturer information, not independent comparative trail testing. They do not establish which transmission is most durable or reliable, or how these vehicles perform against one another over time. A published crawl ratio is useful for comparing gearing when the configurations match, but it is not a complete measure of off-road capability.
