Are there 4×4 hybrid SUVs that can go off-road?
Yes. Jeep identifies both the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe as 4×4 hybrids with off-road capability. Toyota’s 2024 Land Cruiser adds a conventional-hybrid option with full-time 4WD. These vehicles are not interchangeable: the Jeep 4xe models use plug-in hybrid powertrains, while the Land Cruiser does not require plugging in to operate as a hybrid.
The details below are based on manufacturer materials, not a comparative trail test. Published output and capability figures should be treated as manufacturer claims, and a model-family maximum does not necessarily describe every trim. For a used 2024 vehicle, confirm the exact trim, transfer case, tires, suspension, and installed off-road equipment.

What matters when choosing a hybrid SUV for off-roading?
Hybrid type and how you use the vehicle
A conventional hybrid and a PHEV involve different ownership considerations. The Land Cruiser is a conventional hybrid; Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe are plug-in hybrids. The information here does not establish electric range, charging costs, or comparative operating costs for these vehicles, so those should be checked separately if they affect your decision.
Four-wheel-drive system and trim
“4×4” does not identify one single system. Toyota specifies full-time 4WD for the Land Cruiser. Stellantis lists several Wrangler systems—Command-Trac part-time, Rock-Trac part-time, Rock-Trac full-time, and Selec-Trac full-time—so verify which system comes with the specific 4xe trim. Jeep’s documentation also calls out Selec-Trac with 4LO on the Willys 4xe.
Lockers, articulation, tires, and protection
On uneven, technical terrain, traction and the ability to keep tires in contact with the ground can matter more than peak horsepower. Check whether the vehicle has locking differentials, a stabilizer-bar disconnect, suitable tires, skid plates, and rock rails. Equipment varies by trim: Toyota includes center and rear lockers on all Land Cruiser grades and offers a stabilizer disconnect; Jeep lists specific Wrangler trim equipment rather than assigning every Wrangler-family feature to every 4xe.

Geometry and clearance
Approach, breakover, and departure angles describe how steep an obstacle can be before the front, underside, or rear of a vehicle risks contact. Ground clearance, tires, suspension, load, and the exact path also affect real-world passage. Published maximums are useful screening figures, not guarantees for every configuration or trail condition.
2024 Toyota Land Cruiser i-FORCE MAX: best documented conventional-hybrid all-rounder
Toyota says every 2024 Land Cruiser grade uses its i-FORCE MAX hybrid system: a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine paired with an electric motor between the engine and eight-speed automatic. Toyota rates it at 326 hp and 465 lb-ft, with an EPA-estimated 23 mpg combined. The vehicle has full-time 4WD.
The Land Cruiser’s standard trail equipment is unusually clear in Toyota’s announcement. All grades have center and rear locking differentials; the electronic rear locker can distribute power evenly between the rear wheels. Multi-Terrain Select operates in 4WD High and Low. Toyota also lists Crawl Control and Downhill Assist, and offers a front stabilizer-bar disconnect and Multi-Terrain Monitor.

Toyota publishes maximum angles of 31 degrees approach, 25 degrees breakover, and 22 degrees departure. These are stated maxima, not figures guaranteed for every configuration. Toyota also lists a maximum towing capacity of 6,000 pounds. Its 2024 launch announcement gave a starting MSRP of $55,950; that is a launch figure, not a current used-vehicle valuation.
Based on this equipment, the Land Cruiser is a strong option for someone who wants a conventional hybrid, full-time 4WD, and factory trail aids without selecting a PHEV. Toyota’s fuel-economy figure is an estimate, not evidence that it out-economizes the Jeep PHEVs under comparable conditions.
2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe: likely trail-first PHEV, with trim caveats
Stellantis rates the 2024 Wrangler 4xe at 375 hp and 470 lb-ft. The manufacturer lists four 4×4 systems across the Wrangler range, but that does not mean every system or capability maximum applies to every 4xe trim.

Stellantis gives Wrangler-family maximums of 47.4 degrees approach, 27.8 degrees breakover, 40.4 degrees departure, 12.9 inches of ground clearance, and up to 34 inches of water-fording capability. Treat these as Wrangler-family maxima, not as confirmed specifications for any particular 4xe. Match the figure to the trim and equipment before using it to compare vehicles.
Trim details make a practical difference. The manufacturer calls out Rubicon equipment including a 4:1 4LO transfer case, an electronic front sway-bar disconnect, front and rear lockers, and 33-inch all-terrain tires. It also specifies a rear locker and 33-inch tires for Willys, and Selec-Trac with 4LO on Willys 4xe.
That documented hardware makes a properly equipped Wrangler 4xe the likely choice here for buyers focused on technical trails. This is an inference from stated equipment, not a tested ranking. For a used example, inspect the actual build and tires rather than assuming it has the headline Wrangler capability figures.

2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe: a PHEV for a more conventional SUV format
Jeep’s FAQ names the Grand Cherokee 4xe as a 4×4 hybrid with advanced four-wheel-drive systems and off-road capability. It belongs on the shortlist for shoppers who want a plug-in hybrid in the Grand Cherokee format rather than the Wrangler’s trail-focused design.
Do not attach one approach, breakover, departure, or clearance figure to the whole model line. The available 2024 fleet-guide information indicates that geometry varies with suspension and configuration, including air suspension. Check the exact trim and equipment against the original vehicle specifications before comparing it with a Wrangler or Land Cruiser. The manufacturer information cited here does not support a trim-by-trim trail ranking.
Why the 2024 Lexus GX is not on this hybrid shortlist
The 2024 Lexus GX is an off-road-capable SUV, but it does not qualify as a U.S.-market 2024 hybrid based on Lexus’s launch information. Lexus USA’s June 8, 2023 announcement said its hybrid powertrain would come later. It should not be counted among 2024 U.S. hybrid models simply because a hybrid version was planned.
Lexus Canada separately published 2024 GX geometry figures of 26 degrees approach, 24 degrees breakover, and 21 degrees departure. Those Canadian-market figures do not change its exclusion from this U.S.-focused hybrid comparison.

- Choose the Land Cruiser if you want a conventional hybrid and value full-time 4WD, standard center and rear lockers, and clearly listed factory trail aids.
- Look at the Wrangler 4xe if technical-trail equipment is the priority and you can identify a trim with the lockers, transfer case, tires, and other features you need.
- Consider the Grand Cherokee 4xe if you want a PHEV in a more conventional SUV format; assess capability using the exact trim and suspension rather than a model-wide number.
For any of them, compare the actual vehicle’s tires, protection, recovery points, and installed equipment with the terrain you expect to encounter. Optional recovery gear can be useful preparedness, but it must be compatible with the vehicle’s recovery points and the conditions; no particular product or fitment is established here.
