The right choice depends on how long you need cab cooling, whether you need heat or engine preheating, what electrical loads you run, and whether the unit fits your truck and has service support nearby. This shortlist compares diesel and electric options using manufacturer-published information checked on October 8, 2026—not independent head-to-head testing.
What a semi-truck APU does
An auxiliary power unit supplies cooling, heating, and electrical power for cab hotel loads while the tractor engine is off, according to Thermo King’s APU FAQ. APUs can also maintain tractor battery charge; some can integrate with the engine coolant system to help with cold-weather starting. Many are mounted outside on the frame rails, often behind the passenger-side fuel tank, but truck layouts vary.
Top semi-truck APU options
These products are not directly comparable on the published figures alone: specifications differ by model, configuration, and region, and the available sources do not establish a neutral overall winner.

How to choose between diesel and electric
Start with your actual parked use, not a headline runtime or savings number. Compare the same needs across options before asking dealers for a configuration-specific quote.
- Cooling hours: Estimate how long you need air conditioning at a time and how often. Ask what conditions and loads a quoted runtime assumes.
- Heat and preheating: Confirm whether the specific package provides cab heat and whether it can support your engine-preheat needs.
- Electrical loads: List the appliances and other equipment you expect to run, including any medical devices. Verify that the configuration can support them alongside climate control.
- Energy access: Compare diesel fueling with the electric system’s battery-charging needs and your access to shore power.
- Fit and weight: Have an installer check the truck’s frame, fuel-tank arrangement, available space, and any relevant weight constraints.
- Emissions rules: Check the exact unit and installation against requirements where the truck operates. A compliance statement for one model option does not certify every APU or installation.
- Service access: Find out who can maintain the unit near your routes and how parts and warranty service are handled.
- Total cost: Compare installed quotes for the same equipment and configuration, then consider expected use and maintenance.
What fuel-savings and payback claims do—and don’t—show
Thermo King says its TriPac APU uses “approximately 75% less fuel per hour” than idling the tractor engine and describes that as about 2,500 gallons per year or 10,000 gallons over typical tractor ownership. Those are Thermo King claims, not guaranteed savings for every truck or duty cycle. The figures should not be treated as an independent comparison with electric APUs.

Thermo King’s July 11, 2024 article says APU operating-expense savings recoup the initial investment on average within the first year. The cited page does not establish an independent calculation. Your result depends on the purchase and installation price, idle hours displaced, fuel prices, use, maintenance, and how long you keep the truck. Get an installed quote and use your own operating assumptions before estimating payback.
Carrier’s “up to 11 hours” AGM runtime and “up to 17 hours” lithium-ion air-conditioning runtime are also manufacturer figures for their respective products, not a standardized side-by-side test. The cited AGM specifications are on a Latin America page; verify U.S. availability and configuration with a dealer.

Fitment, emissions, warranty, and dealer checks
Confirm the exact truck and installation
Ask an installer to verify the APU’s fit with your truck’s frame and fuel-tank layout, along with the required heating, electrical, and charging components. Do not assume that a model name alone identifies the complete package or proves compatibility.
Request compliance documents for the exact model
Thermo King describes a TriPac model with a passive aftertreatment device as a 50-state CARB-compliant solution and EPA Tier 4-compliant for new OEM or aftermarket installations. Treat this as the manufacturer’s statement about that model option, not a blanket determination for every unit, truck, or jurisdiction. Ask the dealer for documentation covering the exact model and installation.

Read the warranty terms
Thermo King says it doubled standard warranty coverage for major components to four years and extended bumper-to-bumper coverage to two years. Before comparing warranty value, confirm the start date, exclusions, labor coverage, and which product and components qualify in the full warranty documentation.
Check local service and price
Request a written, installed quote for the configuration that fits your truck. Confirm which dealer will handle installation and service, what is included in the price, and how warranty work is handled. The available product information does not establish a reliable installed-price comparison.
