For a 2025-model-year manual sports car, start with the kind of driving and space you want: the Mazda MX-5 Miata is a two-seat convertible, the Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ are related rear-drive coupes, and the Honda Civic Si is a more practical front-drive sport sedan. There is no universal winner, and the published prices below are not current dealer quotes or directly comparable transaction prices.
Which 2025 manual sports car fits your life?
| Model | Body and everyday utility | Drivetrain and manual availability | Published power | Published price basis | Everyday trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mazda MX-5 Miata | Two-seat roadster; soft top or retractable-fastback RF | Rear-wheel drive. Sport and Club are manual-only; Grand Touring is offered with manual or automatic. | 181 hp and 151 lb-ft, per Mazda North American Operations’ 2025-model-year release. | Mazda’s starting MSRPs effective September 3, 2025: $29,830 for the soft top and $37,850 for the RF. | Choose it for open-air driving and a compact two-seat format; AP’s 2025 overview relaying Edmunds describes a tight cabin and small trunk. |
| Toyota GR86 | Fixed-roof 2+2 coupe | Rear-wheel drive; a six-speed manual is available for 2025, according to Toyota’s official result. | Not stated in the cited source set. | AP’s 2025 report relaying Edmunds lists a $31,135 starting price; its price basis and destination inclusion are not specified there. | AP/Edmunds describes the related coupes as more useful for passenger and cargo space than the Miata, with firm ride quality. |
| Subaru BRZ | Fixed-roof 2+2 coupe | Rear-wheel drive; six-speed manual standard, six-speed automatic optional. | 228 hp and 184 lb-ft, per Subaru of America’s 2025 specifications. | AP’s 2025 report relaying Edmunds lists a $32,380 starting price; its price basis and destination inclusion are not specified there. | Like the GR86, it adds rear seats and a fixed roof compared with the Miata; expect the firm-ride trade-off noted by AP/Edmunds. |
| Honda Civic Si | Four-door sport sedan; more practical passenger format | Front-wheel drive; six-speed manual with rev-match and helical limited-slip differential. | 200 hp and 192 lb-ft; Honda’s 2025 specifications give EPA estimates of 27/37/31 mpg city/highway/combined. | Honda’s July 2024 launch release listed $29,950 MSRP before $1,095 destination, or $31,045 including that stated destination charge. These are launch figures, not current dealer prices. | A sensible fit if four doors and sedan practicality matter more than rear-wheel drive or a convertible roof. |
The figures are not one consistent price snapshot: Mazda’s prices reflect a later September 2025 adjustment, Honda’s are from its July 2024 launch, and AP/Edmunds reports starting prices for the coupes without specifying destination treatment. Confirm the exact trim, roof, destination charge, incentives, dealer pricing, insurance and operating costs before buying.
Miata or GR86?
Pick the Miata if a convertible, two-seat cockpit is the point of the car. Mazda lists its 2.0-liter engine at 181 hp and 151 lb-ft; its entry Sport and Club trims require a manual, while Grand Touring can be configured with either transmission. The soft top and RF are distinct body choices, and the RF’s later 2025 starting MSRP is substantially higher than the soft-top figure.
Choose a GR86 if you want a fixed roof and occasional rear-seat or cargo flexibility. It is a 2+2 coupe, not a four-seat family car: AP’s overview relaying Edmunds characterizes the related GR86 and BRZ as more useful for passengers and cargo than the Miata, but also notes their firm ride. AP/Edmunds reports manual versions of the coupes at about six seconds from 0–60 mph; treat that as an overview figure, not a guarantee for every configuration or test condition.

Is the BRZ basically the same as the GR86?
They are closely related rear-wheel-drive coupes, and AP’s 2025 report describes them as mechanically related. The available source set does not establish a detailed, trim-by-trim comparison of their differences, so it would be misleading to declare one universally better. Subaru’s specifications confirm the 2025 BRZ’s 2.4-liter boxer four at 228 hp and 184 lb-ft, with a six-speed manual standard and six-speed automatic optional. Toyota’s official result confirms six-speed manual availability for the 2025 GR86, but detailed Toyota specifications were not accessible in the cited material.
Compare the exact trims and equipment available where you live, then drive both if possible. The reported AP/Edmunds starting prices—$31,135 for GR86 and $32,380 for BRZ—are published overview numbers, not live quotes, and their destination treatment is not stated.

When does the Civic Si make more sense?
The Civic Si is the practical alternative here, not a direct substitute for a roadster or rear-drive coupe. Its four-door body, front-wheel drive and manual transmission make it relevant to someone who wants an engaging car with a conventional sedan layout. Honda’s 2025 specifications list a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, 200 hp, 192 lb-ft, rev-matching on its six-speed manual and a helical limited-slip differential. Honda gives EPA estimates of 27 mpg city, 37 highway and 31 combined.
Honda’s July 2024 release called the Si “the only car in its class available exclusively with a manual transmission.” That is Honda’s class-specific manufacturer claim, not a claim that the Si is the only manual car in this comparison or on the market. Its launch MSRP and destination figures above are historical published pricing, not a current offer.

Which 2025 cars do not meet the manual requirement?
The 2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI is a useful boundary case, but AP’s 2025 overview relaying Edmunds says every 2025 GTI has a seven-speed automatic. It therefore does not fit a list of manual recommendations for that model year. Other performance cars may have manual versions in some trims, but confirm the exact 2025 configuration rather than assuming a model name guarantees a stick shift.

How to choose and verify the right configuration
- Choose the body format first. Decide between a two-seat open-air roadster, a fixed-roof 2+2 coupe, or a four-door sedan. This will eliminate more mismatches than comparing horsepower alone.
- Check transmission by trim. Mazda’s Miata Sport and Club are manual-only, while Grand Touring can be manual or automatic. Subaru lists the BRZ manual as standard and automatic as optional. Honda’s Si is specified with a six-speed manual. Toyota’s official 2025 result confirms a GR86 six-speed manual; verify the trim and inventory listing with a dealer.
- Compare prices on the same basis. Identify model year, trim, roof, destination, incentives and the date of the quoted price. Published MSRP or starting price is not a promised transaction price.
- Drive the car on the roads you use. The Miata’s small cabin and trunk, the coupes’ firm ride, and the Civic’s sedan format describe meaningful differences that output figures cannot resolve.
- Check ownership costs independently. Obtain current insurance quotes and confirm fuel, maintenance, dealer availability and local pricing; the published model-year figures here do not establish those costs.
