The 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV is the clearest price-and-range match in the available figures: Chevrolet lists a $34,995 starting price and EPA-estimated range of 319 miles for the FWD version. The 2026 Nissan LEAF is cheaper at a listed $29,990 starting price, and its S+ trim is rated for up to 303 miles—but it is a subcompact crossover, so it may not meet the space needs of a compact-SUV shopper. These are manufacturer starting prices, not guaranteed out-the-door quotes, and range varies by trim and drivetrain.

Other options include the Hyundai IONIQ 5, Toyota bZ, Volkswagen ID.4, Tesla Model Y and Rivian R2. Their range figures are useful for comparison, but the cited information does not establish comparable current prices for all of them. Treat this as a shortlist, not a definitive affordability ranking.

2026 electric SUVs with long range: the figures to compare

Start with the exact model year, trim and drivetrain—not just the model name. A vehicle’s advertised maximum range may belong to one configuration and not be available with another. Prices below are included only where the cited source provides them; a missing price does not mean the vehicle is necessarily expensive or inexpensive.

Vehicle and configuration Published price information EPA-estimated range What to know
2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV, FWD Chevrolet lists a $34,995 starting price; confirm the price and trim at a local dealer. 319 miles Chevrolet calls it a compact SUV EV. The starting price and FWD range are separate specifications; confirm the exact configuration carrying each figure. Chevrolet specifications
2026 Nissan LEAF S+ Nissan lists a $29,990 starting price for the LEAF; the cited page does not establish that this is the S+ price. Up to 303 miles Nissan positions the LEAF as a subcompact SUV/crossover. Check whether its size works for your passengers and cargo. Nissan LEAF specifications
2026 Hyundai IONIQ 5, RWD Starting price not stated on the cited page. Up to 318 miles for SE, SEL and Limited RWD; 245 miles for SE standard-range RWD The standard-range SE and long-range RWD trims have notably different estimates. Hyundai specifications
2026 Hyundai IONIQ 5, AWD Starting price not stated on the cited page. 290 miles for SE/SEL AWD; 269 miles for Limited AWD; 259 miles for XRT AWD Do not apply the 318-mile RWD maximum to these AWD trims. Hyundai specifications
2026 Toyota bZ, FWD Price not stated in the cited report. Up to 314 miles Edmunds’ reported test car traveled 331 miles in one test. That is an individual result, not a revised EPA rating or a guarantee. Associated Press reporting on Edmunds
2026 Tesla Model Y Premium RWD Price not stated in the cited report. Up to 357 miles The cited report is about range, not current price or trim availability. Check both before treating it as an affordable option. Associated Press reporting on Edmunds
2026 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro Price not stated on the cited page. 291 miles Volkswagen also gives a model-specific home-charging example; see the charging section. Volkswagen specifications
Rivian R2 Comparable current price not stated in the cited report. 275 miles for Standard; 345 miles for Standard Long Range As reported September 23, 2026, more affordable trims were expected in late 2026 and spring 2027. Confirm that a specific trim is actually orderable and available. Associated Press reporting on Edmunds

The shortlist combines manufacturer specifications and reported independent testing, and it is not exhaustive. It does not support a ranking by total cost, reliability, cargo capacity or charging-network quality. For a fair purchase comparison, obtain current local quotes and compare like-for-like configurations.

Which options make the strongest starting points?

For a price-and-range starting point: Chevrolet Equinox EV

The Equinox EV is the most straightforward place to begin if you want a compact SUV and need a published price alongside a long EPA estimate: $34,995 starting price and 319 miles for FWD. Chevrolet notes that prices and colors may vary by model. Check the exact trim, drivetrain, dealer price and local availability rather than assuming the starting price buys the configuration with the quoted range.

For the lowest published starting price: Nissan LEAF

The LEAF pairs a listed $29,990 starting price with up to 303 EPA-estimated miles for S+. Do not assume the entry starting price applies to S+, however: the cited information does not establish an S+ price. Nissan describes the vehicle as a subcompact SUV/crossover, so compare its actual cabin and cargo space with your needs before treating it as a substitute for a larger compact SUV. The available figures do not provide a consistent cargo-volume comparison.

For a wider choice of range and drivetrain: Hyundai IONIQ 5

The IONIQ 5’s range depends substantially on the trim. Hyundai lists up to 318 miles for SE, SEL and Limited RWD, while AWD versions range from 259 miles for XRT to 290 miles for SE/SEL and 269 miles for Limited. The SE standard-range RWD is rated at 245 miles. The figures show that “IONIQ 5 range” is not one number; choose the exact configuration before comparing it with another vehicle. A current starting price was not established by the cited page, so request a current quote rather than relying on a remembered or outdated figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For alternatives where price needs checking

The Toyota bZ FWD’s EPA estimate is up to 314 miles; a reported Edmunds test reached 331 miles. The Tesla Model Y Premium RWD is reported at up to 357 EPA-estimated miles, the highest figure in this shortlist. The Volkswagen ID.4 Pro is rated at 291 miles. These range figures alone do not show whether any is affordable for your budget: verify current trim availability and a local price before comparing purchase value.

The Rivian R2 deserves a different kind of caution. The September 23, 2026 report gives 275 miles for Standard and 345 miles for Standard Long Range, but also describes the more affordable trims as expected in late 2026 and spring 2027. Those timing statements are expectations, not confirmation that a buyer can order or take delivery now. Verify the actual configuration and availability before including it in a near-term shopping decision.

EVIQO Level 2 EV Charger J1772 40A NEMA 14-50 - 240V Wall Charging Station
  • WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
  • PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
  • CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.

How much range changes with drivetrain and trim

Use the estimate attached to the exact vehicle you plan to buy. In the IONIQ 5 lineup, SE/SEL AWD is rated at 290 miles versus up to 318 miles for the specified SE/SEL RWD versions—a 28-mile difference between those listed groups. Limited AWD is rated at 269 miles versus up to 318 miles for Limited RWD, a 49-mile difference. These comparisons illustrate the range trade-off in the listed configurations, but they are not a universal AWD penalty: battery, trim and other configuration differences matter, and the figures should not be generalized to other models.

Likewise, do not place a model’s maximum range beside a price for its entry trim and imply that the two apply to the same vehicle. For example, Nissan’s $29,990 figure is a LEAF starting price, while 303 miles is the S+ estimate; Chevrolet’s price is a starting price while the stated 319-mile figure is for FWD. Confirm the exact trim and price combination on the build sheet or dealer quote.

What “affordable” means when comparing these models

A starting price is a useful screening figure, not a full comparison of what two buyers will pay. Chevrolet’s listed $34,995 for the Equinox EV and Nissan’s $29,990 for the LEAF are manufacturer starting prices; they do not by themselves show the price of a specific long-range trim, the dealer’s current offer, or the final amount due. Options, dealer pricing, taxes and fees can change the transaction total. Incentives may also depend on current rules, location and buyer eligibility, so check them directly rather than assuming a discount applies.

For a useful affordability check, request itemized local quotes for the exact configurations you would actually consider. Ask whether the quote includes selected options and dealer charges, and compare the same categories across vehicles. If you are comparing the LEAF S+ with an Equinox EV FWD, for instance, do not use the LEAF’s starting price as though it were a verified S+ quote. The same discipline applies to any model whose current price is not listed here. Without comparable current quotes, the range table can identify candidates but cannot establish which one gives the most range for the money.

Also keep the purchase decision separate from a total-ownership-cost calculation. The figures here do not establish electricity costs, insurance, maintenance, resale value or other ownership expenses. If those determine your budget, calculate them with information specific to your location and driving rather than inferring them from range or MSRP.

What EPA range does—and does not—tell you

EPA-estimated range is useful for comparing configurations under a common rating framework, but it is not a personal promise of how far a particular trip will go. Independent test results can fall on either side of an EPA estimate. In the reported Edmunds testing, a Toyota bZ test car covered 331 miles against its 314-mile estimate, while a Rivian R2 Performance covered 304 miles against a 330-mile estimate. Those are two specific test outcomes, not a prediction for every owner or a reason to add or subtract a fixed amount from another vehicle’s estimate. The Associated Press reported these Edmunds results in 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reported R2 Performance result also does not apply to the R2 Standard or Standard Long Range. Its test figure is 304 miles against a 330-mile EPA estimate, while the reported estimates for the other trims are 275 and 345 miles, respectively. Keep test results labeled by vehicle and configuration, and keep them separate from official EPA figures.

Check charging access before choosing by range

Long range can reduce the need for charging stops, but your home and public-charging options are part of the practical decision. If you have suitable parking and electrical capacity, a Level 2 home charger can support routine charging at home. Confirm the vehicle’s connector and charging capability, the electrical installation requirements, and the charging options available where you drive. Do not assume one vehicle’s charging time or rate applies to another.

Volkswagen says the 2026 ID.4 can charge at up to 11 kW with an available home wall charger and gives a charging time of up to eight hours from completely empty to full. This is a Volkswagen model-specific example, not a universal Level 2 charging time. It is a stated maximum rate and duration for the ID.4 setup, not a promise that every home installation or charging session will reproduce it. Confirm that the charger is compatible with the vehicle and that the home’s electrical capacity and installation support the setup. The cited information does not establish a comparable DC fast-charging time for every vehicle in the shortlist, so check the exact trim’s specifications and the charging network relevant to your routes.

If you rent, park on the street or share a building’s parking, do not assume a home charger is available simply because the vehicle supports one. Check whether charging can be installed or accessed where you park, then consider whether dependable public charging fits your daily routine and longer trips. No single charging arrangement is right for every buyer; the key is to confirm how you will charge before treating a long EPA range as a complete solution.

  • HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
  • CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.

A practical way to compare finalists

  1. Write down the complete configuration. Record model year, trim, drivetrain, battery or range variant where specified, and wheel or tire package if it affects the configuration being quoted. Use the EPA estimate for that version.
  2. Get a current local price for that exact vehicle. Ask for the dealer’s itemized quote and distinguish manufacturer starting MSRP from the vehicle’s price with selected options, dealer pricing, taxes and fees. Check applicable incentives directly for your location and eligibility; none are assumed here.
  3. Compare space against your actual use. Check the manufacturer’s dimensions and cargo information, then test-fit child seats, luggage, mobility equipment or other regular cargo. Pay particular attention to the LEAF’s subcompact positioning if you are shopping for a larger SUV.
  4. Map charging around your routine. Confirm whether home charging is feasible, what installation is needed, and where you can charge on regular routes and longer trips. Verify charging capability and connector compatibility for each finalist.
  5. Confirm supply and timing. Ask whether the exact trim is currently available, orderable or subject to a wait. Do not treat an announced future trim or anticipated delivery window as current inventory.
  6. Keep evidence types separate. Put EPA estimates in one column and any independent test result in another, with the tested configuration identified. Do not turn a single road test into a range guarantee.

A useful comparison sheet has separate fields for MSRP or starting price, current local quote, EPA range, drivetrain, size and cargo fit, home-charging feasibility, DC fast-charging information when verified, and inventory or delivery timing. If a figure is unavailable, ask the seller or manufacturer rather than filling the gap with another trim’s specification.

Common shopping mistakes to avoid

  • Ranking by maximum range alone: the longest-range trim may not be the one whose price or availability fits your budget.
  • Treating starting MSRP as the purchase total: options, dealer pricing, taxes, fees and incentives can change what you pay. Get a current local itemized quote.
  • Assuming a model name has one range: the IONIQ 5 figures vary from 245 to 318 miles across the listed configurations, and the drivetrain and trim need to stay attached to each number.
  • Using a test result as a guarantee: the Toyota bZ and R2 results are individual Edmunds tests reported by the Associated Press, not promised outcomes for every vehicle.
  • Ignoring vehicle size: a strong price and range combination does not make a subcompact crossover a fit for every buyer who needs an SUV.
  • Assuming charging will be identical across models: the ID.4 home-charging example is specific to that vehicle and setup. Check each finalist’s own requirements and charging details.

How to choose based on your priorities

If the first filter is a published starting price paired with a long-range SUV configuration, begin with the Equinox EV and verify the exact FWD trim and local quote. If keeping the listed entry price lower matters more and a smaller vehicle is acceptable, compare the LEAF—but establish the S+ price separately. If you want AWD, use the IONIQ 5’s AWD-specific estimates rather than its RWD maximum. If you are considering the Toyota bZ, ID.4 or Model Y, obtain comparable current pricing before deciding whether its range fits an affordability target. Consider the R2 only after confirming the trim you want is actually available.

No single winner can be named from range and starting price alone: comparable prices are not established for every model, and the available figures do not settle space, local inventory, charging access or total ownership cost. Choose the configuration that fits your budget, passenger and cargo needs, and charging routine, then verify its price and availability locally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which electric SUV on this list has the lowest published starting price?

Nissan lists the 2026 LEAF at $29,990, the lowest starting price among the models with a listed price here. That figure is not established as the S+ trim price, and Nissan positions the LEAF as a subcompact SUV/crossover. Compare an exact S+ quote and make sure its size suits your needs.

How much range can AWD cost on the 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 5?

The listed estimates vary by trim. SE/SEL AWD is rated at 290 miles versus up to 318 miles for the specified SE/SEL RWD versions, a 28-mile difference. Limited AWD is rated at 269 miles versus up to 318 miles for Limited RWD, a 49-mile difference. These are configuration-specific comparisons, not a universal AWD penalty.

Volkswagen says the 2026 ID.4 can charge at up to 11 kW with an available home wall charger and gives up to eight hours from completely empty to full. This is a model- and setup-specific example. Confirm the vehicle, charger and home electrical installation can support the arrangement.

Are the more affordable Rivian R2 trims available now?

The Associated Press reported on September 23, 2026, that more affordable R2 trims were expected in late 2026 and spring 2027. Those were anticipated timing windows, not confirmation of current orderability or delivery. Check with Rivian for the specific trim’s actual availability.

The Bottom Line

Best place to start: compare the Equinox EV FWD’s 319-mile EPA estimate and $34,995 listed starting price against a current local quote. Consider the LEAF if its smaller size works, but verify the S+ price. For every finalist, match the exact trim to its range, confirm charging access and get an itemized local price before deciding which is truly affordable for you.
