There is no evidence here to name one universally best 50cc gas scooter: the available manufacturer specifications are not a comparative road test. For a documented current example, Honda’s 2026 Metropolitan pairs a 49cc fuel-injected engine with an automatic belt drive and compact published dimensions. Compare it with other candidates on fit, equipment, price, service access and your local rules—not unverified claims about miles per gallon or speed.
What “best” means for a 50cc city scooter
A 50cc scooter can suit short urban trips, but engine displacement alone does not tell you whether it fits your commute. Consider the route, rider fit, storage, braking equipment, dealer support and the rules where you will register and ride it. “50cc” is a shopping shorthand, not a guarantee of a particular legal classification.
The current manufacturer information available for this comparison documents Honda’s 2026 Metropolitan and a 2026 KYMCO Agility 50 specification sheet. It does not establish a common independent test of the two, or a comprehensive survey of the market. Treat manufacturer specifications as product claims, not measured comparative results.
Two current examples to investigate
Honda Metropolitan (2026)
Honda lists the Metropolitan with a 49cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, four-stroke engine, programmed fuel injection and an automatic V-Matic belt drive. Chassis specifications include a telescopic front fork, single rear shock, 95 mm front drum brake and 110 mm rear drum brake with a combined braking system. Honda lists 80/100-10 tires, a 28.3-inch seat height, 179-pound curb weight and 1.2-gallon fuel capacity. Honda says curb weight includes standard equipment, required fluids and a full fuel tank. Honda’s page lists a $2,649 base MSRP and a $300 destination charge as of October 5, 2026. Those figures exclude tax, license, registration and dealer-installed options, and prices or availability may change. Honda also lists a one-year transferable limited warranty and says this model meets current EPA and California Air Resources Board standards; that manufacturer statement is not a comparative emissions ranking.
KYMCO Agility 50 (2026)
KYMCO publishes a model-year 2026 Agility 50 specification sheet. Use that sheet to check the details that matter to your purchase rather than relying on the phrase “high fuel-efficiency” as if it were a measured mileage result. The available material does not establish comparable real-world MPG or enough matched specifications to make a fair numerical head-to-head with the Metropolitan. How to compare scooters before buying
Build a shortlist using the same evidence fields for every model. If a manufacturer does not publish a value, ask a dealer or mark it as not stated rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
- Price: Separate base MSRP from destination, dealer fees, taxes, registration and optional equipment. Confirm a current out-the-door quote.
- Engine and drive: Compare displacement, engine type, fuel delivery and automatic transmission type. Similar displacement does not mean identical performance.
- Fit and handling: Check seat height, curb weight, tire size, suspension and whether you can comfortably maneuver and support the scooter at a stop.
- Brakes: Note each wheel’s brake type and whether the scooter has a combined or linked braking system. Specifications alone do not prove stopping performance.
- Practicality: Verify storage capacity and layout in person, along with fuel capacity and the availability of a suitable service dealer.
- Ownership terms: Compare warranty coverage and service requirements in the current owner’s manual and written warranty.
- Compliance: Check the exact model’s emissions statements, manufacturer certification label and your jurisdiction’s vehicle classification and operating rules.
No directly comparable independent figures establish real-world fuel economy, acceleration, top speed, reliability or maintenance cost for these examples. Do not use those measures to rank one above another without a credible, like-for-like source.

What the fuel-economy evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Honda lists fuel injection and a 1.2-gallon tank for its 2026 Metropolitan, and states that the model meets current EPA and CARB standards. These are useful design, capacity and manufacturer certification details. They do not provide a comparable MPG figure or prove that the Metropolitan is more efficient than another scooter.
EPA identifies non-electric motorcycles as a regulated on-road vehicle category for air pollution. For a particular scooter, keep emissions claims tied to the model and model year; certification compliance is not the same thing as a fuel-economy ranking. Check licensing and road rules where you will ride
Do not assume that a 49cc or 50cc scooter can be ridden on a car license, avoids registration or insurance, or is allowed on a particular road. The legal result depends on jurisdiction-specific definitions and rules. NHTSA says it does not define marketing terms such as “motor scooter” or “moped”; its federal vehicle guidance is not a substitute for state operating requirements. NHTSA’s motorcycle and moped importation guidance addresses federal treatment in that context.
Before paying a deposit, ask your state motor-vehicle agency how it classifies the exact scooter and verify the applicable license, registration, insurance, helmet and road-access rules. Requirements can differ even for vehicles marketed with similar engine sizes. Rules in Quebec, for example, are specific to that province and should not be applied to U.S. riders. Choose a properly fitting, DOT-labeled helmet
Check head shape and measure your head circumference against the helmet maker’s sizing chart. A properly sized helmet should feel snug and should not move when you shake your head. NHTSA recommends wearing a new helmet for 30 to 45 minutes to reveal pressure points before relying on it for rides.
For U.S. compliance, look for the DOT marking and a label identifying FMVSS No. 218, along with the manufacturer or brand, model designation and “CERTIFIED.” NHTSA explains that manufacturers self-certify helmets and that the agency tests selected helmets and can recall products that fail.
