Best 4×4 Trucks | 2026 4-Wheel-Drive Trucks Rated

The best 2026 4x4 trucks range from the all-around Ram 1500 to heavy-duty Super Duty and Ram HD models, midsize Rangers and Tacomas, the open-air Jeep Gladiator, and the electric AWD Rivian R1T.

A good 4×4 truck depends on what you mean by “best.” A half-ton pickup is easier to live with than a heavy-duty model, a midsize truck fits trails and parking spaces better, and a dedicated off-road truck may be a poor choice for regular towing. There is also an important technical distinction: traditional 4WD uses a transfer case and usually offers selectable high- and low-range gearing, while AWD operates automatically and is not the same system.

Our 2026 recommendations separate conventional 4WD pickups from highly capable AWD trucks. Prices, ratings, fuel economy, towing capacity, and range are based on the current model-year information available from Car and Driver and manufacturer sources. Exact capability varies with cab, bed, engine, axle ratio, tires, and other equipment.

1. Best overall 4×4: 2026 Ram 1500

The 2026 Ram 1500 is the strongest all-around choice because it combines a comfortable ride, a broad range of configurations, useful towing ability, and a more upscale cabin than many full-size rivals. Car and Driver rates it 10/10 and places it No. 1 in its current full-size pickup ranking.

The listed starting price is $44,820, and EPA combined fuel economy ranges from 17 to 22 mpg depending on the powertrain and configuration. The available engine lineup includes a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, 5.7-liter Hemi V8, standard-output 3.0-liter Hurricane inline-six, and high-output Hurricane inline-six. The high-output version produces up to 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft of torque.

MELIPRON Heavy Duty Truck Topper Roof Rack for Truck Cap, 500LB Capacity
  • Improve Driving Experience: Truck racks with c-shape tube are aerodynamic that will reduce wind noise at highway speed. Also we provide rubber strips that you can mount them on the crossbar channels to reduce wind noise further
  • Universal Fit: This roof rack fits flat roof/bare roof camper shells and truck toppers without factory rails. Not fit vehicles that have factory roof racks or rounded roofs. Please measure roof width before purchasing and checking our fitment guide for details
  • Drilling Needed: Before mounting truck topper racks, you need to drill holes on your flat roof. We provide necessory mounting hardware and installation manual for you to install camper shell roof rack, easy to assemble( (typically in 45 minutes)
  • Made to Last: Truck cap roof rack is made of reinforced aluminum for strength and corrosion resistance. Support up to 500 lbs when properly installed (capacity depends on your truck cap structure and mounting surface)
  • Expand Usage Space: Roof rack cross bars are designed with t-slot channels, you can install various cargo via t-screws (Not Provide!), such as bike, kayak, roof-top tent, etc. Increase your storage space and make your vehicle organized

Choose the Ram 1500 when you want one truck to handle commuting, family use, occasional towing, and rough roads without the size and stiffness of a heavy-duty pickup. It is available with 4×4, but buyers should verify the drivetrain on the specific cab, bed, trim, and engine being considered.

2. Best heavy-duty work truck: 2026 Ford Super Duty

The Ford Super Duty is the right answer when trailer weight, payload, and commercial work matter more than easy maneuverability. Car and Driver rates it 9/10 and ranks it No. 1 among the trucks with the best towing capacity. Its listed starting price is $48,770.

Ford offers the Super Duty with rear-wheel drive or electronic shift-on-the-fly 4×4. The lineup spans the F-250, F-350, and F-450, so “Super Duty” is not one uniform capability specification. Engine, cab, bed length, axle ratio, hitch equipment, and model determine the final tow and payload ratings.

This is a heavy-duty truck rather than a direct substitute for a Ram 1500 or F-150. The extra capability brings more weight, greater exterior dimensions, higher running costs, and a less convenient daily-driving experience. Select it when you routinely tow or haul loads that exceed half-ton truck territory, not simply because a larger number sounds better.

3. Best heavy-duty diesel alternative: 2026 Ram HD

The 2026 Ram HD earns the top spot in Car and Driver’s current heavy-duty ranking and diesel-truck ranking, with a 9/10 rating and a listed starting price of $49,650. It is a compelling choice for buyers who need serious towing strength but prefer the Ram’s cabin and truck layout.

Ram’s 2026 HD range includes 2500 and 3500 models with 4×2 and 4×4 configurations. Available onboard power reaches 2.4 kW, which can be useful at a worksite or campsite. Diesel availability and the choice between the 2500 and 3500 make this line particularly relevant to frequent long-distance towing.

Do not use a single advertised maximum as the expected capacity of every Ram HD. Ram’s towing figures are calculated under SAE J2807 procedures and include assumptions about passengers, options, and trailering equipment. Check the manufacturer’s chart for the exact engine, cab, bed, axle ratio, hitch, and drivetrain before buying.

VEVOR Truck Ladder Rack, 1000 LBS / 454 KG Strong Capacity Truck Racks, Non-Drilling/Drilling Installation for Long or Heavy Cargo, 43.3-63 inch Adjustable Width for Kayak, Ladder, Surfboard, Lumber
  • 1000 LBS Load Capacity: Made from heavy-duty reinforced steel, this rack effortlessly handles various heavy loads. Equipped with multiple tie-down points to securely hold ladders, lumber, kayaks, and other large items. The powder-coated finish prevents rust, making it ideal for outdoor use.
  • Adjustable Rack: The width can be flexibly adjusted between 43.3-63 inch (1100-1600 mm), and the installation length is adjustable within the range of 63-75.6 inch (1600-1900 mm). This ensures compatibility with different truck models, providing greater versatility.
  • No-Drill Installation: Our rack features a quick J-bolt (8 pieces) mounting system, requiring no drilling. It won't damage your truck's side rails and can be quickly removed. We have also pre-drilled holes on the mounting brackets for optional permanent installation.
  • Gain More Space: The detachable rear crossbar structure allows for easier and quicker loading and unloading. It facilitates the transport of taller items with a forklift without the need to remove the entire rack, overcoming the height limitation of the rack.
  • Aerodynamic Design: The front crossbar is designed with an upgraded aerodynamic air deflector, further optimizing aerodynamic performance. This effectively reduces wind resistance and noise while not increasing fuel consumption, ensuring a smooth driving experience.

4. Best midsize 4×4: 2026 Ford Ranger

The 2026 Ford Ranger is the best general-purpose midsize 4×4 in this group. Car and Driver rates it 9/10 and highlights its combination of competitive towing and payload capability, comfortable ride, and acceptable road manners. The listed starting price is $35,445, while EPA combined fuel economy ranges from 21 to 23 mpg.

The Ranger is offered in rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, so not every Ranger is a 4×4. Confirm the drivetrain rather than assuming that a particular trim includes it. A properly equipped Ranger is easier to place on narrow trails and in urban parking spaces than a full-size pickup, while still providing useful bed and towing capacity.

For most buyers, the regular Ranger makes more sense than the Raptor if the truck will spend most of its time on pavement or pulling a utility trailer. It delivers the midsize format without turning every commute into an off-road exercise.

5. Best midsize off-road truck: 2026 Ford Ranger Raptor

The Ranger Raptor is the most focused midsize off-road truck here. Car and Driver rates it 10/10 and ranks it No. 1 in both its midsize and off-road pickup categories. It starts at $59,165 and returns an EPA-estimated 17 mpg combined.

Its 405-horsepower V6, long-travel suspension, and off-road hardware are designed for high-speed desert driving rather than merely reaching a muddy campsite. That setup gives the Raptor more wheel travel and control over rough terrain than a conventional Ranger.

The trade-off is substantial. It costs considerably more than a basic Ranger, uses more fuel, and its specialized suspension is unnecessary for buyers who primarily tow, haul materials, or drive on ordinary roads. Buy it for its off-road performance, not as the cheapest way to obtain four driven wheels.

6. Best traditional midsize 4WD alternative: 2026 Toyota Tacoma

The 2026 Toyota Tacoma remains one of the clearest choices for buyers who specifically want a conventional midsize 4WD truck. Car and Driver rates it 9/10 and ranks it No. 3 among midsize pickups. Its listed starting price is $34,290, and nonhybrid versions are listed at 20 to 23 mpg combined.

Rank #3

  • Gain More Space: With our truck bed rack, you will never bother by the lack of extra large storage space in your truck any more. The max load reaches up to a heavy 800 lbs/363 kg and features reinforced crossbars, making it great for transporting kayaks, surfboards, ladders, lumbers and tents, etc.
  • Start Loading in No Time: Stop to waste time in installation. Our racks for trucks feature a quick J-bolt(4 pcs) mounting system that requires no drilling. All necessary mounting accessories are also provided. The choice has never been easier. It won't cause damage to your truck side beam, and it can be removed quickly.
  • Keep It Rust-proof: Our pick-up truck rack is powder coated in the color of black, making it both durable and exquisite. The end caps keep water and debris from entering tubes, effectively making the inside rust-proof and corrosion-proof. Get ready for years of use.

The drivetrain menu requires close attention. The Tacoma can be configured with 2WD, part-time 4WD, or full-time 4WD. Most i-FORCE MAX models come standard with 4WD, while the Limited uses full-time 4WD with an electronically locking center differential.

Toyota also offers several different off-road approaches. The TRD Off-Road is the balanced trail option, the Trailhunter uses Old Man Emu suspension components and is aimed at overlanding, and the TRD Pro uses FOX adjustable shocks. These are not interchangeable packages, so compare the suspension, tires, recovery equipment, and drivetrain on the exact trim.

7. Best value-oriented midsize 4×4: 2026 Chevrolet Colorado

The Colorado is a useful middle ground between a full-size Silverado and a smaller, less capable compact pickup. Car and Driver rates it 9/10 and ranks it No. 4 among midsize trucks. Pricing starts at $34,495, with EPA combined fuel economy ranging from 17 to 21 mpg.

Depending on configuration, Chevrolet lists up to 7,700 pounds of towing capacity, 430 lb-ft of torque, and 1,710 pounds of payload. Those figures are strong for a midsize truck, but they should not be treated as universal Colorado specifications.

There is a particularly important 4WD detail: Chevrolet’s trailering information identifies the available two-speed transfer case as necessary for the Colorado’s four-wheel-drive towing capability. A Colorado wearing an off-road-oriented name or appearance package does not automatically have the same transfer-case hardware. Confirm the equipment list before comparing tow ratings.

8. Best affordable midsize 4×4: 2026 Nissan Frontier

The 2026 Nissan Frontier is the value-oriented choice. Its listed starting price of $33,895 is lower than most similarly configured competitors, and EPA combined fuel economy ranges from 18 to 21 mpg. Car and Driver rates it 8/10 and describes it as an affordable, configurable, capable midsize pickup.

The Frontier makes sense for buyers who want a conventional truck with available 4×4 capability without paying for the newest technology or most elaborate off-road suspension. It is straightforward and useful, but its interior is less polished than those of some newer rivals.

Rank #4
Mountainpeak 500 lb Aluminum Camper Shell Truck Cap Roof Topper Rack
  • Aluminum Construction with Coating: Unlike steel or plastic ladder racks, truck topper roof rack uses high-strength aluminum. A premium powder-coated finish delivers maximum corrosion resistance and durability in harsh weather conditions
  • Universal Fit with Adjustable Base for Versatility: Truck topper rack can adjust mounting base from 23" to 60.2", which can fits a wide range of vehicles, including truck roofs, camper shells, and truck toppers
  • Special Channels for More Space: In order to enhance the load-bearing capacity, truck topper rack is equipped with channels, attaching brackets to carry your kayak, ladder and etc. Max Load capacity is 500 lbs, which can load more gear for you
  • Secure Drill-Mount Installation: Truck topper ladder rack is exclusively designed for direct drilling installation onto the camper shell or truck topper surface. It does not support installation on factory rooftop tracks, roof rails, or utility tracks
  • Enjoy for your trip: Unlike traditional racks that amplify wind noise, truck racks feature an aerodynamic T-shape tube design and rubber seat, which significantly reduces wind noise at highway speeds.

That limitation matters if the truck will serve as a daily luxury vehicle. If the priorities are a reasonable purchase price, a usable bed, conventional truck construction, and occasional trail use, the Frontier remains a sensible shortlist candidate.

9. Best open-air 4×4: 2026 Jeep Gladiator

The Jeep Gladiator is the only truck here that combines a pickup bed with removable doors, a removable roof, and a fold-down windshield. It uses four-wheel drive and starts at $41,815. Car and Driver gives it a 7.5/10 rating and lists 19 mpg combined.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its appeal is less about being the most refined or efficient truck and more about the experience. The open-air hardware and Jeep’s trail-oriented design make it unusually engaging on slow, technical routes and sunny back roads.

On pavement, the compromises are easier to notice. Steering can feel vague, the ride is less settled than that of newer midsize pickups, and the cabin offers fewer amenities for the money. Towing is also configuration-dependent: properly equipped versions can reach 7,700 pounds, but a specific 2026 Mojave configuration has a lower listed rating. Check the exact truck rather than applying the maximum to every Gladiator.

10. Best electric off-road pickup: 2026 Rivian R1T

The Rivian R1T is the strongest electric off-road pickup, although it is not a conventional 4×4. It uses all-wheel drive, with independent electric motors providing traction instead of a transfer case and selectable low range. Car and Driver rates it 10/10, ranks it No. 1 among electric pickups, and places it No. 2 in its off-road ranking.

The listed starting price is $74,885. Depending on battery, motor, wheel, and tire configuration, EPA-estimated range runs from 258 to 420 miles. The 2026 lineup adds a 1,025-horsepower Quad-Motor version, a native North American Charging Standard port, Tesla Supercharger compatibility, and a CCS DC adapter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rivian lists up to 11,000 pounds of towing capacity, but towing range is a separate question. In Car and Driver testing, an R1T towing a 6,100-pound trailer at 70 mph traveled only 110 miles. That result illustrates why the EPA range figure should not be used as a towing-range estimate. The R1T also does not support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

How to choose the right 4×4 truck

4WD or AWD?

Choose traditional 4WD if you expect to use low-range gearing, drive through difficult terrain at low speed, or want a familiar transfer-case system for serious off-roading and work. AWD is different: it normally manages torque automatically and is often optimized for road traction. The Rivian R1T is extremely capable off-road, but it remains an AWD vehicle rather than a conventional 4×4.

Half-ton, midsize, or heavy-duty?

  • Midsize: Best for narrower trails, lower purchase prices, and easier everyday maneuvering. Consider the Ranger, Tacoma, Colorado, or Frontier.
  • Half-ton: The best compromise for mixed use, with more cabin, bed, and towing ability. The Ram 1500 is the leading all-around choice here.
  • Heavy-duty: Best when large trailers and substantial payloads are routine. The Super Duty and Ram HD are more capable but also larger and less economical to use as ordinary commuter vehicles.

Check the build sheet, not just the model name

“4×4,” “off-road,” and “maximum towing” do not identify one fixed specification. Before signing a deal, verify the transfer case, axle ratio, engine, cab, bed length, tires, hitch, payload rating, and the truck’s door-jamb certification label. For towing, compare the exact vehicle’s gross combined weight rating and payload—not only the brochure’s highest available tow number.

Trucks that should not be labeled conventional 4x4s

The 2026 Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz are compact unibody pickups with available AWD, not traditional body-on-frame, low-range 4WD trucks. The Honda Ridgeline also uses standard AWD and is designed primarily as a comfortable daily-driving pickup; its maximum tow rating is 5,000 pounds. These can be good vehicles, but they belong in a different comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Rivian R1T deserves the same clarification. Its electric AWD system gives it remarkable traction and off-road control, yet it does not have the conventional transfer-case 4WD layout used by the Ram, Ford, Toyota, Chevrolet, Nissan, and Jeep models in this list.

What happened to the Ram RHO and TRX?

The high-performance Ram RHO/TRX listing that appears in some current rankings is a 2027 model, not a 2026 truck. It should not be included in a strictly 2026 comparison. For the 2026 model year, the relevant full-size performance choice is the Ford F-150 Raptor, which starts at $81,800, earns a 9/10 rating from Car and Driver, and uses long-travel suspension, all-terrain tires, and up to 720 horsepower.

FAQ

What is the best 4×4 truck for 2026?

The 2026 Ram 1500 is the best overall 4×4 truck for most buyers. It earns a 10/10 Car and Driver rating and offers a broad range of engines, cab and bed configurations, comfort features, and available 4×4 systems. Buyers who regularly tow very heavy trailers should instead consider a Ford Super Duty or Ram HD.

What is the difference between 4WD and AWD on a truck?

Traditional 4WD generally uses a transfer case with selectable high- and low-range gearing. AWD usually distributes power automatically and is designed primarily for on-road traction, although systems such as the Rivian R1T’s can be highly capable off-road. AWD is not automatically equivalent to conventional 4WD.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which 2026 4×4 truck is best for off-roading?

The Ford Ranger Raptor is the best factory-built midsize off-road truck, with a 405-horsepower V6 and long-travel suspension designed for high-speed rough-terrain driving. The Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, Trailhunter, Jeep Gladiator, and Rivian R1T are also strong choices for different kinds of trail use.

Is every 2026 Ford Ranger or Toyota Tacoma a 4×4?

No. The 2026 Ranger is available in rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. The Tacoma offers 2WD, part-time 4WD, and full-time 4WD depending on trim and powertrain. Always verify the drivetrain and transfer-case equipment on the specific truck.

The Bottom Line

The 2026 Ram 1500 is the best broad-use 4×4, while the Ford Super Duty and Ram HD are better suited to frequent heavy towing. For a midsize truck, the Ford Ranger is the easiest recommendation, the Ranger Raptor is the specialist off-road choice, and the Toyota Tacoma is the strongest traditional 4WD alternative. The Colorado and Frontier keep costs more manageable, while the Gladiator is for buyers who value open-air driving above refinement. The Rivian R1T is an excellent electric off-roader, but its AWD system should not be confused with conventional 4WD.
