The best 40 mph-class electric scooter depends on more than its advertised top speed. Compare independently tested range and stopping distance where available, along with weight, brakes, battery, service support, and whether local law allows you to ride it where you plan to go. The figures below come from named publishers or a manufacturer and are not directly comparable unless their test methods match.
40 mph scooters at a glance
Electric Scooter Insider’s comparison reports the following claimed top speeds and its own tested range, braking, and weight figures. Those test results belong to that publisher; they are not universal performance guarantees. The comparison does not establish that every model is currently available in the same configuration.
| Model | Claimed top speed | Tested range reported by Electric Scooter Insider | Braking distance reported by Electric Scooter Insider | Weight reported by Electric Scooter Insider |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SPLACH Titan | 37 mph | 29 miles | 2.4 m | 64 lb |
| Varla Eagle One V2 | 40 mph | 24.4 miles | 2.0 m | 82 lb |
| Apollo Phantom | 41 mph | 29 miles | 2.1 m | 77 lb |
| Kaabo Mantis King GT | 43 mph | 38 miles | 2.1 m | 79 lb |
See Electric Scooter Insider’s comparison and test details before treating any result as a deciding factor: rider, surface, weather, speed, and test protocol can all affect range and braking.
How to choose the right model
Look for performance evidence, not just a speed claim
A manufacturer-rated maximum speed is not the same as a repeatable independent test, and neither tells you what speed is legal on a public road. Check how a reviewer tested the scooter and whether the exact version being sold matches the tested model.

Compare realistic range and stopping control
Range depends on riding mode and conditions. Give more weight to a clearly described test than to an unqualified maximum-range claim. For control, assess the brake type, tires, suspension, and visibility equipment together. Motor output or top speed alone does not establish that a scooter can stop or handle safely in your conditions.
Account for weight and ownership
The comparison above lists scooters weighing 64–82 lb. That can matter if you need to carry one up stairs, lift it into a vehicle, or store it indoors. Before buying, confirm charging time, replacement-battery compatibility, warranty coverage, parts availability, and where service is available for your exact configuration.
A manufacturer-documented example: Solar EQ
Solar Scooters’ product page lists the EQ with dual 1,200 W motors, 2,400 W peak output, a 52 V 18.2 Ah battery, 40 mph top speed, 65 lb curb weight, 330 lb maximum payload, hydraulic brakes, and an IP54 rating. The manufacturer lists 25 miles in Sport mode or 30 miles in Eco mode, plus a 5–7 hour charge time. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independently verified results. The page showed the scooter as sold out when accessed; availability and specifications can change.
Check the Solar EQ manufacturer page for current configuration and availability.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you legally ride a 40 mph scooter on public roads?
There is no universal answer: road-use rules vary by country, state, and locality, and the scooter’s classification and equipment may matter. Check the current rules for the specific place and route where you intend to ride; do not assume that a product’s advertised speed makes it road-legal.

In the United States, NHTSA’s importation and certification FAQ addresses federal vehicle classification for that context. It says a motor scooter capable of 20 mph or greater and equipped with components needed for on-road use, such as lights, mirrors, and turn signals, is regarded as a motor vehicle for its import/certification discussion. The same FAQ lists stand-up scooters among categories that are not “motor vehicles” requiring FMVSS certification under that guidance. This is not a state or local road-use ruling, and NHTSA says it does not approve manufacturers or products.
Read NHTSA’s importation and certification FAQ, then check the relevant local transport authority for operating rules.
Safety checks before and during a ride
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises: “Always wear a bicycle helmet when riding to protect your head.” Its micromobility guidance also recommends following local traffic laws and inspecting the scooter before riding.
- Check handlebars, brakes, throttle, bell, lights, tires, cables, and frame before setting off.
- Use reflectors, a headlamp, and a bell or horn to improve visibility.
- Slow down for bumps and uneven surfaces. Small scooter tires can stop suddenly on obstacles; CPSC advises slowing down and leaning back when approaching bumps.
- Ride alone, and never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
For charging, CPSC advises staying present, unplugging the charger when charging is complete, and using only the supplied or manufacturer-recommended charger. Use replacement batteries only when the manufacturer confirms they are suitable.
