The 2026 Forester Hybrid starts at $34,730 for the Premium Hybrid. Subaru lists fuel economy at 35 mpg and says the SUV can travel up to 581 miles on a tank under its stated conditions. The system is built around a Subaru boxer-four-cylinder engine.
Best trim: Premium Hybrid, because it has the lowest entry price in the hybrid range.
Watch out for: Subaru’s “up to 40 percent better city fuel economy” claim compares the hybrid with the conventional Forester. It does not mean the hybrid gets 40 mpg; Subaru lists 35 mpg.
5. 2026 Mazda CX-5: best nonhybrid value
If you want a conventional gasoline SUV rather than a hybrid, the redesigned CX-5 is one of the most compelling choices. It starts at $29,990, uses a 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G inline-four, and includes i-Activ all-wheel drive as standard equipment.

The engine produces 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque and works with a six-speed automatic transmission. Mazda lists an EPA-estimated 24 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined.
Best trim: The 2.5 S Select adds useful equipment without moving too far above the base price.
Watch out for: The 2026 CX-5 does not have a hybrid powertrain at launch. Mazda says its hybrid version is planned for the 2027 model year. Also, the 2026 model’s 187-hp engine is not the turbocharged engine offered in some earlier CX-5 trims.
6. 2026 Subaru Forester: best gas-powered adventure SUV
The conventional Forester remains a sensible option for buyers who value visibility, standard AWD, and light off-road ability more than hybrid fuel economy. Its 2.5-liter Boxer four-cylinder produces 180 horsepower, and Subaru lists a 1,500-pound towing capacity on the appropriate specifications.

The gasoline Forester starts at $29,995. Fuel economy reaches as high as 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway, depending on trim and equipment. The Wilderness version adds more ground clearance, underbody protection, and off-pavement hardware, but its tires and equipment can reduce efficiency.
Best trim: Premium for general value; Wilderness if trail access and rough-road equipment are priorities.
Watch out for: Standard AWD and 1,500-pound towing capacity do not make the Forester a replacement for a larger body-on-frame SUV when serious towing is required.

7. 2026 Toyota Highlander Hybrid: best three-row hybrid
The Highlander Hybrid is the practical choice when a compact SUV is too small but a large three-row SUV is unnecessary. It uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain and is listed at 35 mpg combined in the XLE configuration. Toyota’s 2026 materials also show hybrid versions with AWD.
Toyota lists the 2026 Highlander lineup with a starting MSRP of $47,940, although its displayed specifications show a hybrid XLE at $45,870. Because Toyota’s online pages can display different trims and pricing views, verify the exact trim and current configurator price before buying.
Best for: Families that occasionally or regularly need a third row but still want hybrid-like fuel economy.
Watch out for: The Highlander’s third row is not as spacious as the one in the larger Grand Highlander. The two vehicles should not be treated as interchangeable.
8. 2026 BMW X3 30 xDrive: best luxury four-cylinder SUV

Watch out for: Electric range is not total driving range. Plug-in-hybrid fuel economy depends heavily on whether the battery is charged, so do not compare its figures directly with a conventional hybrid without checking the EPA labels.
