Bentley’s W12 successor is the Ultra Performance Hybrid: a 4.0-litre V8 paired with an electric motor in a plug-in hybrid system. In Continental GT Speed form, Bentley quotes 782 PS (771 bhp), 0–60 mph in 3.1 seconds, and up to 47 miles (76 km) of electric-only range. Those are Bentley’s published specifications, not independent test results. The title’s “let us try it” refers to a prototype drive, but the full Ars Technica report is not available here, so its author’s driving impressions cannot be verified or attributed.
What replaces Bentley’s W12?
Bentley announced on 8 May 2024 that an all-new, performance-focused V8 hybrid would succeed its W12. The company said it had built 105,000 W12 engines over the preceding two decades. Bentley later announced that the final hand-built W12 had been produced at Crewe on 23 July 2024.
The successor is not simply a smaller petrol engine: Bentley calls the system the Ultra Performance Hybrid. Its current range page describes a 4.0-litre V8 and an electric motor working together as a plug-in hybrid. The W12 era has ended in production, while the hybrid combines combustion power with the option of electric-only driving.
How much power and performance does the Continental GT Speed have?
Bentley lists the Continental GT Speed’s V8 at 600 PS (584 bhp) and its electric motor at 190 PS (187 bhp), for a combined system output of 782 PS (771 bhp). Bentley gives this model a 0–60 mph time of 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 208 mph. These are manufacturer claims, not independently verified measurements.

For context, Bentley’s September 2024 announcement for the Flying Spur says that its 782 PS hybrid system is quicker than the outgoing W12 Speed. That is a Flying Spur comparison; its performance figures should not be substituted for the Continental GT Speed’s specifications.
How far can it travel on electric power, and how does charging work?
Bentley publishes an electric-only range of up to 47 miles (76 km) for the Ultra Performance Hybrid. For the Continental GT hybrid variants, Bentley lists weighted combined electrical consumption of 19.8 kWh/100 km and weighted combined CO₂ emissions of 93 g/km under WLTP. These figures are specific to the model entries and test-cycle context on Bentley’s page; they should not be applied to the GTC, Flying Spur, or Bentayga.

Bentley describes three ways to manage the powertrain:
- EV Drive: electric-only driving is available from startup when the battery has sufficient charge.
- Hybrid: the car can use navigation and predictive mode selection to manage energy over a journey.
- Hold: the system preserves battery charge for later use.
For the Continental GT Speed, Bentley says the battery can be replenished in as little as 2¾ hours with charging power of up to 11 kW. Actual charging time depends on the available power and conditions; Bentley’s statement is an official claim, not an independent charging test.

What can be said about the prototype drive?
The Ars Technica result matching the title describes a prototype drive. Its full article text was unavailable, so its author’s road observations, test conditions, and subjective reactions cannot be confirmed. It would be misleading to invent impressions about the hybrid’s refinement, sound, handling, or how its character compares with the W12.
The available official information establishes the new powertrain’s architecture, output, selected model performance figures, electric range, and operating modes. It does not establish how the prototype felt to drive or whether those published figures were reproduced in a particular test.

How does the successor compare with the W12?
The clearest supported difference is architectural: Bentley has replaced its 12-cylinder W12 with a plug-in hybrid built around a 4.0-litre V8 and electric motor. The hybrid adds electric-only operation and charge-management modes. Bentley’s cited materials do not provide a complete, like-for-like Continental GT W12-versus-hybrid comparison of power, torque, acceleration, and electric range, so a broader numerical comparison would be unreliable.
For the Flying Spur specifically, Bentley says the 782 PS hybrid is quicker than the outgoing W12 Speed. That model-specific statement does not establish the same comparison for every Bentley using the hybrid system.
