The Beachy is a towable caravan made by the Hobby Group, styled for laid-back beach and surf trips. The “motor-less VW surf van” comparison describes its look, not its maker or powertrain: it is neither a Volkswagen nor a self-propelled camper. Hobby’s German site currently lists four layouts: the 360, 420, 420+ and 450.
What makes the Beachy different?
Beachy’s appeal is its compact, open-feeling design and beach-oriented details rather than motorhome-style amenities. At its 2021 launch, the trailer was described with a side entry door and a split rear hatch: an upper lift-gate and lower half-door. The open rear was intended to make it easier to bring in long gear such as surfboards or bikes and to let air into the living space. Those are launch-report descriptions; check the current specification for the particular model and year before assuming a feature is standard. New Atlas, June 14, 2021
The same launch report described two side benches and folding tables that convert into a 200 × 180 cm bed. It also listed a pull-out 38-litre Dometic fridge, sink and 13-litre fresh- and waste-water tanks. Beachy did not have a built-in gas stove in that report; a portable stove, leisure battery and portable toilet were described as optional items, not included equipment. Beachy 2026 models compared
The figures below come from Hobby’s German 2026 technical and price sheet, dated August 1, 2025. Prices are factory prices including 19% VAT, not current dealer quotes. “Running-order mass” includes standard equipment and the fluids specified by the sheet; Hobby gives a ±5% range, so the central value is not a guaranteed exact weight for an individual trailer. 420: more length, same listed berth count
The 420 stretches to 5,687 mm but retains the 360’s listed sleeping capacity of two adults and one child and the same 2,000 × 1,800 mm convertible bed. Its running-order mass is 808 kg, ±5%, with a 1,000 kg technically permissible total mass.
420+: bunk layout in the 420 footprint
The 420+ has the same listed overall length as the 420, but the sheet lists two child berths alongside two adult sleeping places. Its running-order mass is 822 kg, ±5%, and its technically permissible total mass is 1,000 kg. The English catalogue uses broader wording, saying the 420+ and 450 can accommodate up to four adults or families with two to three children; the technical sheet’s listed sleeping places specify two children. Treat those descriptions as different claims, and confirm the intended sleeping arrangement with the manufacturer for your model year. A model name or published running-order mass alone cannot establish whether a Beachy is safe or legal for a particular vehicle. The sheet’s ±5% mass range matters when estimating payload and matching trailer to tow vehicle. Check the specific trailer’s documentation and your vehicle’s permitted towing and load limits, including any relevant driving-licence limits, before travelling.
