They range from short-range sensors for parking and blind-spot assistance to long-range and 4D imaging radar platforms. The right choice depends on the job, the system architecture, and how much radar data the vehicle’s compute platform needs—not on a single “best” sensor.
What an automotive radar solution includes
A radar solution is more than a sensor module. Depending on the design, it can combine an RF transceiver, antennas, radar signal processing, a radar processor or system-on-chip (SoC), software, and an interface to the vehicle network. NXP describes a portfolio that includes integrated 77 GHz RFCMOS transceivers, radar processors, and SoCs for corner, long-range, and 4D imaging radar. Its platform can connect radar data to vehicle networks such as CAN and Ethernet.
Radar measures range and relative motion directly. It supplies information that complements cameras and other vehicle sensors in perception systems. NXP describes radar as sensing the car’s surroundings in real time despite weather or light conditions; that is the company’s positioning, not a guarantee that radar performance is unaffected by every environment or operating condition.
How frequency and radar type relate to the driving task
Frequency is one factor in choosing a radar platform, but it does not by itself establish range, resolution, or suitability. The manufacturer sources describe 24 GHz as a short-range option and 76–81 GHz, often referred to as 77 GHz, for automotive sensing that includes higher-resolution and longer-range applications. Compare a specific device’s sensing range and angular and elevation resolution rather than inferring performance from the frequency label alone.

| Radar category | Typical role described by manufacturers | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Short-range radar | Nearby-object sensing, including parking and other assistance functions. STMicroelectronics lists both 24 GHz and 77 GHz radar solutions. | Frequency, sensing range, angular coverage and resolution, antenna configuration, and data output. |
| Mid-range radar | A category in short-, mid-, and long-range radar portfolios; AMD describes imaging-radar integration across all three ranges. | Required range, angular and elevation resolution, channel configuration, and whether processing is local or centralized. |
| Long-range radar | Longer-distance sensing used in functions such as adaptive cruise control and highway or traffic assist. | Required sensing range, resolution, transmit and receive channels, processing needs, and vehicle-network interface. |
| 4D or imaging radar | Higher-resolution angular and elevation information; some architectures stream radar data or point clouds to centralized vehicle compute. | Point-cloud or other data output, channel count, software access, compute placement, and the vehicle interface. |
These categories are not interchangeable performance grades. The exact capabilities depend on the particular radar, antenna arrangement, processing, and system design; the cited vendor pages do not provide a neutral, cross-vendor ranking.
Which driving functions use radar
Manufacturer-listed ADAS applications include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot and lane-change assistance, highway and traffic assist, parking assist, collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Radar data can contribute to the sensing used by these functions, but a radar component alone does not provide a complete driving feature: the vehicle system must integrate and interpret its data.
- Adaptive cruise control: radar sensing can contribute range and relative-motion information about traffic ahead.
- Blind-spot and lane-change assistance: short-range sensing can support detection in areas beside or behind the vehicle.
- Highway and traffic assist: mid- or long-range radar can contribute to awareness of vehicles ahead.
- Parking assistance: short-range radar is one option for sensing nearby objects.
- Collision warning and automatic emergency braking: radar is among the sensors that can inform a vehicle’s hazard response.
These are application categories identified by manufacturers, not a claim that every radar supports every function or that radar alone controls the vehicle.

How radar architectures are changing
Local radar processing
A radar SoC or processor can handle processing near the sensor. NXP’s described portfolio includes radar SoCs and processors as well as sensors spanning corner, long-range, and imaging use cases. When assessing this approach, determine what output the device supplies and what processing remains for the vehicle computer.

Imaging-radar designs can provide higher-resolution angular and elevation information and stream radar data or point clouds to centralized vehicle compute. AMD describes programmable radar processing, sensor fusion, and AI perception as part of its imaging-radar integration approach. Infineon highlights centralized radar concepts and future domain- or zonal-ECU designs, including a common interface across parts of its ADAS radar family.

What to compare when choosing a radar solution
Start with the vehicle function and system architecture, then compare candidate sensors and development platforms against the requirements that follow.
- Operating range: short, mid, or long range, matched to the intended sensing task.
- Frequency band: confirm the exact operating band and its fit for the application.
- Angular and elevation resolution: especially important when evaluating imaging or 4D radar.
- Transmit and receive channels: check the antenna and channel configuration required by the design.
- Data and processing architecture: establish whether the device provides processed output, raw data, point clouds, or a streaming architecture, and where subsequent compute will run.
- Vehicle interface: verify the required network connection, such as CAN or Ethernet where supported.
- Safety, power, and thermal requirements: confirm support and limits for the target vehicle design with the component supplier; the cited manufacturer pages do not establish comparable values across vendors.
- Software and development access: check what tools, documentation, and data access the supplier provides for the exact device or kit.
Prototyping and production considerations
For a prototype or vehicle test
Search terms such as “77 GHz automotive radar module,” “automotive radar evaluation kit,” and “4D radar development kit” can help identify engineering hardware. Infineon’s XENSIV CARKIT 2C3 is one documented example: Infineon describes it as a complete 77 GHz 8T8R module for 4D/HD radar operation and vehicle drive tests. That description identifies its intended development use; it does not establish current retail inventory or suitability for a particular vehicle.
Before selecting a kit, confirm its frequency, antenna configuration, software access, data interface, regulatory status, and vehicle-test documentation. A kit’s ability to support a drive test does not, by itself, establish that it is qualified for production use.

For a production design
Production radar designs may draw on several component categories: automotive radar transceivers, radar-on-chip devices, radar processors, safety power-management ICs, memory, CAN or Ethernet interfaces, and perception software. NXP, Infineon, STMicroelectronics, and Texas Instruments publish radar-related component categories; AMD publishes programmable processing and sensor-fusion platforms. Compare exact product documentation and system requirements rather than treating a supplier’s portfolio description as a performance comparison.
What the market forecast does—and does not—say
AMD displays a TechInsights forecast of “241M short-, mid-, and long-range radar units produced by 2026.” This is a forecast reported by AMD, not an audited count of units actually produced. It indicates an expectation of substantial automotive-radar deployment, but it does not identify a winning supplier or establish the performance of any individual radar solution.
