Automakers adopted the layout for different reasons: Audi made it a defining part of its engineering and performance history, Volvo used it across petrol and diesel models, and other manufacturers applied it in narrower or less well-documented ways. The evidence supports a useful overview of ten names associated with the configuration, but not a claim that all ten had equally deep or sustained commitments.
Why build an inline-five?
The inline-five occupies a middle ground between a four-cylinder and a six-cylinder: it adds a cylinder without requiring the length of an inline-six. That can help when an engine bay or front-drive layout makes a longer engine difficult to package. Audi’s engineers considered a six-cylinder for the Audi 100, then rejected it over space and weight-distribution concerns. A 1977 SAE paper by Audi NSU engineers described the production five-cylinder as a way to pursue smoothness and performance while retaining front-wheel drive.
The configuration also became associated with distinctive engine character and, in some applications, turbocharged performance. But the name alone does not make different engines directly comparable: displacement, fuel type, aspiration, model, market, and era all matter.
The strongest production stories
Audi: a lasting engineering signature
Audi says it introduced a five-cylinder engine in the second-generation Audi 100 in 1976. The 2,144 cc engine produced 100 kW (136 PS), according to the company’s 2025 historical account. Audi’s development then extended across road cars, diesels, and motorsport rather than remaining a one-model experiment.

- Motorized Mechanical Motion: After assembly, an electric motor drives the crankshaft, pistons, timing chain, pulleys and dual overhead camshafts in synchronized motion, clearly revealing how the complete inline-four system works together.
- Precision metal craftsmanship: Anodized aluminum alloy and stainless steel give the completed engine substantial weight, durable surfaces and finely resolved mechanical detail.
- 250+ piece advanced build: Follow the full-color manual through about four hours of assembly. Numbered parts arrive organized in protective foam, with basic tools included.
- Open DOHC engineering: Inspired by pioneering inline-four racing engines, the exposed twin-cam, chain-driven timing layout reveals how motion travels from crankshaft to valvetrain.
- Collector-ready presentation: At 6.24 x 4.61 x 7.17 inches and about 4.72 pounds, the completed model brings real presence to a home, office or workshop. A durable metal case protects and organizes the kit.
In 1979, the Audi 200 5T’s turbocharged engine was rated at 125 kW (170 PS) and 265 Nm. The original Audi quattro arrived in 1980 with 147 kW (200 PS), helping connect the five-cylinder to the marque’s rally-era identity. Audi’s later milestones included the 2.5-liter TDI in the 1989 Audi 100, rated at 88 kW (120 PS), the 1994 Avant RS2 at 232 kW (315 PS), and the 2009 TT RS, whose 2.5-liter engine was rated at 250 kW (340 PS). These are specifications for the named models and periods, not figures that describe every version or market.
Volvo: petrol and diesel across several models
Volvo’s archived S80 specifications list both inline-five petrol and diesel options. A 2006 manufacturing report also describes five-cylinder engines in a broader range of Volvo applications and in selected Ford models. That breadth makes Volvo one of the clearest examples of an automaker using the layout as a recurring production choice, rather than reserving it for a single performance flagship.

Other automakers associated with the layout
The following names broaden the history, but the available documentation is not equally strong for every make. Audi and Volvo have the clearest evidence here for recurring use; some other entries are narrower applications or are supported here by secondary historical reporting rather than a manufacturer’s own technical archive.
| Automaker | What the available evidence supports | How to read the connection |
|---|---|---|
| Ford | A 2006 manufacturing report lists Volvo-built 2.0–2.5-liter petrol five-cylinder engines for Focus and S-Max applications. Secondary reporting also associates Volvo five-cylinders with Focus ST/RS and describes a separate diesel application. | Not every Ford five-cylinder application was necessarily the same engine or sold in every market; the detailed model and date picture is less fully established here. |
| Honda / Acura | Honda’s own history describes a five-cylinder concept engine for the Sports Concept SSM, while noting that the production direction used four cylinders. Secondary reporting links production five-cylinder use to the Acura Vigor. | Keep the concept-car account separate from the Vigor production claim, which is secondary in the sources cited here. |
| Mercedes-Benz | Secondary historical reporting identifies diesel applications. | A plausible production connection, but the available evidence here does not establish a detailed model-by-model chronology. |
| Volkswagen | Secondary reporting discusses both inline-five and VR5 engines. | The VR5 is a related five-cylinder arrangement, not an inline-five; the two should not be treated as the same engine layout. |
| Fiat | Named in a tertiary overview of five-cylinder engine use. | The available evidence here does not establish specific models or dates. |
| General Motors | Secondary reporting identifies pickup and SUV applications. | The connection is a notable application, but not documented here at the depth of Audi or Volvo. |
| Land Rover | Named in a tertiary overview of five-cylinder engine use. | Specific models and dates are not established by the sources cited here. |
What the ten names do—and do not—show
Counting Audi, Volvo, Ford, Honda/Acura, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Fiat, General Motors, and Land Rover yields nine automaker groups if Honda and Acura are counted together. Honda and Acura can be separated as brands, producing ten names, but that does not turn the evidence into ten equally documented manufacturer histories. The meaningful comparison is the depth and nature of each connection: Audi’s multi-era development, Volvo’s repeated petrol and diesel applications, selected Ford uses, a Honda concept and a separately reported Acura production application, and more limited or less fully specified examples among the remaining makes.
