NAMI reported that its prototypes completed road and bench testing; the motorcycle was publicly presented in May 2024, and Russian type approval was reported in 2024 and again in 2026. Approval does not establish that the Merlon is available for private purchase.
What the Aurus Merlon is designed to do
NAMI says development began in 2019 on the instruction of Russia’s Ministry of Industry and Trade. Its stated purpose is year-round escort duty for heads of state and diplomatic missions. The design brief calls for operation in temperatures from −25°C to +40°C, strong acceleration, long range and high-speed travel on slippery surfaces, with the option of a sidecar. NAMI’s project description says the exterior and key technical, layout and ergonomic decisions were fixed as a prototype batch entered testing.
NAMI says it designed and produces many of the motorcycle’s systems and components, including its high-voltage traction battery, energy-system controls, lighting, composite exterior parts, aluminum-alloy frame elements and thermal-management system. The Merlon is therefore presented as a purpose-built escort vehicle, not simply a conventional motorcycle adapted for parade duty.
What testing and approval establish
NAMI says the prototype batch underwent a full test cycle. Its FAQ describes extended road testing at the Dmitrov automotive proving ground and bench tests of the complete motorcycle and individual components conducted by NAMI’s laboratory and external partners. These are manufacturer-reported activities; the cited sources do not provide an independent test report or independently measured performance results.

NAMI records that Merlon motorcycles were publicly presented at the Russian presidential inauguration on May 7, 2024. Motor reported in April 2024 that a Russian vehicle type-approval certificate (OTTS) had been issued, with NAMI as applicant. In February 2026, Motor reported that it had reviewed the approval document and that NAMI was listed as manufacturer. Type approval is a regulatory milestone in Russia; it does not prove unrestricted consumer sales, export approval or availability in other countries.
Published figures depend on the configuration
NAMI’s project page gives the following figures for the solo motorcycle. They are published specifications, not independently verified road-test results; the stated range should not be read as a real-world guarantee.

The February 2026 Motor report, based on the OTTS, describes the sidecar configuration separately. It gives a 30-minute maximum motor power of 87 hp, curb mass of 625 kg and range of 180 km. Reported dimensions are 2,225–2,275 mm long, 1,859–1,909 mm wide including the sidecar, and a 1,250–1,290 mm wheelbase. Those figures concern the sidecar setup and should not be combined with NAMI’s solo-bike specifications.
Why the sidecar is part of the cold-weather design
NAMI says the sidecar contains an additional traction battery linked to the main battery. Its stated purpose is to help extend range in low temperatures, rather than to carry a passenger or cargo. That makes the sidecar more than an optional body configuration: it is described as part of the Merlon’s range strategy for cold-weather escort work.

Equipment and civilian availability
NAMI lists regenerative braking, selectable riding modes, reverse, fast charging, ABS, traction control, a heated seat and grips, electric windscreen adjustment and a touchscreen instrument panel. Its project information describes a limited batch within the Unified Modular Platform project, with possible volume increases for government customers. NAMI has described a civilian version as under consideration, not as a confirmed retail product.
The cited sources do not establish a current consumer price, private-order process, production volume or delivery schedule. An earlier price estimate repeated in 2024 reporting is time-sensitive and should not be treated as a current price. Russian type approval and the public presentation do not, by themselves, answer whether an individual buyer can order one.
