The 2015 overlap reflects different milestones—not a single worldwide model-year cutoff. Audi unveiled the original R8 in 2006, launched it in 2007, and ended R8 production in March 2024.
How many Audi R8 Coupe generations are there?
There are two production generations. Audi’s 2006 date marks the original R8’s world premiere; 2007 was its market launch. The second generation was unveiled in 2015, with Coupe deliveries beginning in mid-October that year. Audi says production ended in March 2024, after 45,949 R8s had been built. Audi’s end-of-production announcement and its R8 model history document these milestones.
Those dates describe premieres, launches, deliveries and production eras—not a universal model-year calendar. In particular, 2015 is a transition year: the first-generation Coupe and Spyder were still available up to 2015, while the second-generation Coupe began deliveries that October. Model-year labels and availability can differ by market, so a car registered or advertised as a 2015 model cannot be assigned to a generation from the year alone. Audi’s 2015 annual report describes the first generation as available up to 2015.
Audi R8 Coupe generations at a glance
| Generation | Broad production era | Key characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| First generation | 2007–2015 | Launched with a 4.2-liter V8 FSI mid-engine; Audi later added a 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10. Transmission choices included manual, R-Tronic and, later, S-Tronic. |
| Second generation | 2015–2024 | Introduced with a naturally aspirated V10 in two output levels and quattro all-wheel drive; Audi later added rear-wheel-drive versions and revised outputs. The final version was the V10 GT RWD. |
The year ranges are production-era guides, not guarantees of identical model-year naming in every country. Audi described the second-generation R8 as part of a Lamborghini sister-model lineage, but that shared context does not change the Audi model’s two-generation chronology.

First generation: 2007–2015
The first production R8 arrived with a 4.2-liter V8 FSI mid-engine. Audi expanded the range with a 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10, and the generation’s transmission offerings evolved over time: buyers could find a manual, R-Tronic automated manual or, later, S-Tronic dual-clutch transmission. The exact combination depended on version and market; these options should not be treated as available on every first-generation Coupe.
Audi’s R8 history provides the model chronology, while the 2015 annual report identifies the first-generation Coupe and Spyder as available up to 2015. For an individual car, confirm its engine, transmission and model year from the original market brochure or VIN-specific documentation.

Second generation: 2015–2024
The second-generation Coupe was unveiled in 2015 and began reaching customers in mid-October. Its range centered on a naturally aspirated V10, initially with two output levels and quattro. Later additions included rear-wheel-drive versions, so the generation is not exclusively all-wheel drive.
2019 update: two quattro output levels
In its 2018 announcement for revised models going on sale in Europe in early 2019, Audi listed 570 PS for the R8 V10 quattro and 620 PS for the R8 V10 performance quattro. These are Audi’s stated metric horsepower figures for those specific variants, not a universal output chart for every market or model year. Audi’s 2019-model update announcement gives the variant-specific figures.

Rear-wheel-drive versions
Audi’s 2021 technical information lists the R8 V10 performance RWD at 570 PS and 550 Nm. That figure belongs to the named RWD variant; it should not be conflated with the 570 PS V10 quattro or the 620 PS performance quattro. Audi’s RWD technical release identifies its output and torque.
End of production
Audi says the final R8 left the production line in March 2024, after 45,949 total R8s had been built. The final version was the V10 GT RWD. The total covers R8 production, not just Coupe examples. Audi’s production-end announcement provides the date and total.

How to identify the right generation when comparing R8 Coupes
Start with the generation and the car’s market/model year, especially for a vehicle described as a 2015. Then compare the specific configuration rather than relying on a trim name or output number alone:
- Engine: first-generation cars may have a 4.2-liter V8 or 5.2-liter V10; the second generation centered on the naturally aspirated V10.
- Drivetrain: identify whether the car is quattro or rear-wheel drive. The second generation included both.
- Transmission: first-generation listings may refer to manual, R-Tronic or S-Tronic gearboxes; verify the actual car’s specification.
- Variant and output: match the figure to the named version and source year. Audi’s 570 PS figure, for example, applies to more than one distinct variant, while the 620 PS figure cited here is for the 2019-model performance quattro.
- Market and equipment: availability, equipment and specifications can vary by country and configuration. Check the original brochure for that market or VIN-specific records before treating a specification as definitive.
Audi’s cited technical figures use PS for metric horsepower and Nm for torque. They are selected examples, not a complete global year-by-year trim catalog; output labels alone do not establish a car’s model year or full specification.
