Audi’s New PPC Platform: What’s New—and What Isn’t Proven

Audi’s PPC platform is new by name and brings updated electronics and hybrid systems, but public material does not establish whether its structure directly evolves from MLB/MLB Evo.

Audi’s Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) is a newly named architecture for longitudinal-engine combustion cars and SUVs, but Audi’s public material does not establish whether it is a clean-sheet design or a direct evolution of MLB/MLB Evo. What is clear: PPC brings new model generations, E³ 1.2 electronics and 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, while retaining the longitudinal engine layout and using powertrains Audi describes as “new and further developed.”

What Audi means by PPC

Audi defines Premium Platform Combustion as an architecture for conventionally powered vehicles with longitudinally mounted engines. The company says PPC allows it to offer high-volume vehicles across different segments. That definition establishes the intended vehicle type and engine orientation; it does not specify the platform’s detailed structural lineage.

The latest A5 and S5 were announced as the first PPC models. Audi described the Q5 as the second model in the PPC portfolio and its first PPC-based SUV. The A5 generation also marks the change from Audi’s long-running A4 nameplate to A5 for this combustion-engine model line. Audi’s A5 announcement, July 16, 2024, and its Q5 announcement, September 2, 2024, provide those launch descriptions.

Audi’s September 2024 investor presentation places A5, Q5 and A7 under the PPC heading and associates the group with E³ 1.2 electronics. That graphic shows the portfolio Audi presented at the time; it does not establish that the models share identical components or provide a detailed A7 launch timetable. Audi Analyst Day 2024

Is PPC just MLB or MLB Evo with a new name?

The available Audi material does not answer that question. It neither identifies PPC as a direct technical continuation of MLB/MLB Evo nor lists shared floorpan, hard points or other structural components. Calling PPC “just MLB Evo renamed” would go beyond what these sources establish.

The continuity Audi does document is a longitudinal engine layout. That is a broad packaging characteristic, not proof that two platforms share their underlying structure. In the other direction, a new platform name and new-generation product claims do not prove that every engineering element is clean-sheet. The defensible conclusion is narrower: PPC is Audi’s new designation for this longitudinal-engine combustion-vehicle architecture, while the precise engineering relationship to MLB/MLB Evo remains unspecified in the cited material.

What is new, and what appears continuous

Area What Audi’s material says What that establishes
Platform scope PPC is for conventionally powered vehicles with longitudinally mounted engines. A new named architecture and its intended vehicle layout; not a detailed component-carryover account.
Models A5/S5 were first; Q5 was second and the first PPC SUV. Audi’s September 2024 investor presentation also shows A7 under PPC. The announced portfolio at those dates, not a complete rollout schedule.
Electronics Audi associates PPC with E³ 1.2. An updated electronics architecture is part of the PPC program.
Engines Audi calls engines “new and further developed”; the Q5 2.0 TDI is identified as EA288 evo. New platform branding does not mean every engine family is entirely new.
Detailed structural carryover Not stated in the Audi sources cited here. No conclusion about shared floorpan, hard points or direct MLB/MLB Evo inheritance.

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner called the Q5 “a further development of its proven characteristics.” That describes the Q5’s attributes in Audi’s September 2, 2024 announcement; it is not a technical statement about PPC’s predecessor platform. In the A5 announcement, Döllner said the model had a “modern electronic architecture” and marked the launch of a “new generation of efficient combustion engines.” That product and powertrain messaging likewise does not settle platform ancestry.

How electrification fits into PPC

Audi links PPC models to E³ 1.2 electronics and a gradual electrification strategy. The Q5 launch models use MHEV plus, Audi’s 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Audi says plug-in hybrid Q5 versions with external charging were planned to follow later in the model’s lifecycle; that is a stated plan, not a claim that every PPC model has the same timetable.

Audi describes MHEV plus as combining a powertrain generator (PTG), belt alternator starter (BAS) and lithium iron phosphate battery. The PTG is mounted at the transmission output shaft. Audi says it can provide up to 18 kW (24 PS) and 230 Nm, allow limited electric driving, and recuperate up to 25 kW. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Audi’s MHEV plus explanation, January 27, 2025

For specific A5 configurations, Audi reports WLTP savings of up to 10 g/km of CO₂ or 0.38 l/100 km for the 2.0 TDI, and up to 17 g/km of CO₂ or 0.74 l/100 km for the 3.0 TFSI V6. These are Audi’s configuration-specific comparisons, not independent real-world results. Audi’s MHEV plus figures, January 27, 2025

What to take away from the “all-new” label

PPC is new as Audi’s named platform architecture and launch program, and the associated products bring updated electronics, new model packaging and MHEV plus. Audi also retains the longitudinal-engine layout and describes some engines as further developed; the Q5 2.0 TDI’s EA288 evo designation is a concrete example of an engine family that is not presented as a clean-sheet unit.

That combination supports neither extreme claim: the sources do not show that PPC is merely MLB Evo under another name, and they do not show that every underlying vehicle component is entirely new. Until Audi documents specific structural carryover or lineage, the exact MLB/MLB Evo relationship should be treated as unresolved.
