Audi unveiled the third-generation Q5 on September 2, 2024, calling it the first SUV built on its Premium Platform Combustion (PPC). The launch specification is not the same everywhere: Europe’s announced range included petrol and diesel Q5s, while Audi of America’s 2025 lineup was gasoline-only and made quattro standard. Audi calls the Q5 a long-running bestseller, but its launch announcements do not publish sales figures or a ranking that independently proves that label.
What changed in the new Audi Q5?
The 2024 unveiling introduced the Q5’s third generation. Audi described PPC as the platform underpinning this new combustion-engine SUV, part of a broader effort to renew its model range. The generation also brings a revised powertrain strategy: the European launch versions use Audi’s MHEV plus system, while US launch models were announced with specific gasoline engines and standard quattro.
Audi says MHEV plus can add up to 18 kW (24 PS) for short periods. Its September 2024 description identifies a belt starter generator and a powertrain generator; Audi says the latter can enable electric driving, assist the combustion engine and recover energy. Those are the manufacturer’s technical claims, not an independently measured fuel-economy result. Audi’s European generation announcement includes the system details.
Audi CEO Gernot Döllner described the launch as “the next important step in the rejuvenation of our portfolio.” That is Audi’s statement of product strategy, not an independent assessment of the SUV.

How do the European and US launch versions differ?
Audi announced different engine and drivetrain lineups for the two regions. The following figures are manufacturer specifications in each market’s own units; European outputs and US ratings should not be treated as directly interchangeable test results.

Audi said all three European launch engine versions would use MHEV plus. Its US announcement describes the 2025 Q5 and SQ5 with gasoline engines; it does not list a diesel version in that US launch lineup. The regional specifications come from Audi’s September 2024 Europe release and Audi of America’s April 2025 announcement.

When did the new Q5 arrive?
The dates mark different events and markets. Audi presented the third-generation Q5 on September 2, 2024. Its European release said German orders would open in September 2024, with launches in Germany and numerous other European countries planned for the first quarter of 2025. Audi of America later called its version the all-new 2025 Q5 and said US dealership deliveries would begin in May 2025. These announcements do not establish a single worldwide launch date.
What did the launch prices cost?
These are prices in Audi’s dated launch announcements, not current dealer quotes. European figures are German starting prices announced in September 2024; US figures are prices in Audi of America’s April 2025 release, before its separately listed destination and delivery charge.

The US release also listed higher Sportback trim prices, but the figures above are its stated starting prices. What does Audi mean by calling the Q5 a bestseller?
Audi’s September 2024 European announcement says the Q5 had been among the popular SUVs in Germany and in Europe’s midsize segment for more than 15 years. Audi of America’s April 2025 release says the first Q5 launched in the United States for model year 2009 and that it had remained among the popular models in the US midsize premium SUV segment for more than 15 years.

Those are Audi’s qualitative descriptions. The cited releases do not provide a ranked sales table, total, market share or independent buyer survey establishing that the Q5 held a specific sales position. “Bestseller” should therefore be read as Audi’s characterization, not as a verified rank.

Yes. On June 11, 2025, Audi announced plug-in-hybrid Q5 and Q5 Sportback variants and said European orders would begin in mid-June, with an initial launch planned for the third quarter of 2025. Those were the plans in that announcement; they do not confirm present availability in every country. Audi’s e-hybrid announcement covers that update.
