Those manufacturer descriptions do not prove that the S8 rides better. Nor does the available pricing establish that an S8 costs a particular fraction of a Ghost: one U.S. dealer listing is not a market-wide Rolls-Royce price, and a comparable current Audi price is not established here.
What “better suspension” would mean in this comparison
A suspension can be judged by several different outcomes: how well it isolates sharp bumps, controls slower body movements, limits motion in corners, or keeps passengers comfortable while travelling straight. Those qualities are related but not interchangeable. A setup that feels especially composed to a driver may not produce the same impression for a rear-seat passenger.
A fair S8-versus-Ghost verdict would require a same-route comparison with model year, tire type and condition, wheel size, drive mode, road surface, speed and passenger load recorded. The available material consists chiefly of the manufacturers’ descriptions, not an independent back-to-back ride test. It supports explaining how the systems are designed, but not ranking their real-world comfort.
How Audi says the S8 system works
Audi calls its predictive active suspension a fully active, electromechanically operated system intended to manage roll, pitch and heave. Each wheel has an electric motor powered by the car’s 48-volt system, and actuators work with adaptive dampers. Audi says the electronic chassis platform sends control signals every five milliseconds. A front camera can detect irregularities ahead and prepare the suspension, within the system’s limits. Audi’s Technology Lexicon describes the system and its claimed functions.

More than bump response
Audi says the suspension can adapt body movement to drive-select modes and reduce lateral acceleration in corners. It also describes a comfort-entry function and a response to an imminent side impact: the system can raise the endangered side of the body by up to 80 mm. Audi says that raising the body can reduce occupant load by up to 50 percent compared with a side crash without that body-raising response. These are Audi’s stated technical and safety claims, not independent comparative test results or a general crash-safety statistic.
Audi’s current technology reference also gives actuator torque of 1,100 Nm and average power consumption of 10 to 200 watts. These figures describe Audi’s system; they do not by themselves show how comfortable the car is on a particular road.

How the Rolls-Royce Ghost Planar system differs
Rolls-Royce presents Planar Suspension as a coordinated chassis system rather than a single road-preview feature. The Ghost Series II engineering description identifies an upper wishbone damper above the front suspension, continuously variable electronically controlled shock absorbers, self-levelling high-volume air struts and the Flagbearer camera system. Rolls-Royce says Flagbearer reads the road ahead and prepares the suspension for surface changes. The company’s Ghost Series II engineering release outlines these components.
The earlier 2020 Ghost engineering release says its camera-based road preview operates up to 100 km/h. It also describes Satellite Aided Transmission, which uses GPS information to select a gear for upcoming corners. That transmission feature is not suspension, but it illustrates that Rolls-Royce’s approach to preparing for the road includes coordinated vehicle systems.

Rolls-Royce Chief Executive Chris Brownridge described Ghost Series II as “the most technologically advanced and driver-focused V12 Rolls-Royce ever created.” That is the manufacturer’s positioning, not a verdict against the Audi.

Road-preview hardware is not a ride-quality score. The systems differ in architecture and stated functions, but a feature list cannot establish how either car feels over a particular set of bumps, at a particular speed, in a particular mode. A test would need to assess sharp-bump isolation, long-wave body control, cornering motion, perceived passenger lateral acceleration and straight-line comfort separately.

Does the S8 cost a fraction of a Rolls-Royce?
The evidence does not support a reliable price ratio. A Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Austin inventory page displayed a 2026 Ghost at $417,450 when accessed on October 8, 2026. That is one dealer-listed vehicle, potentially reflecting its specification and inventory status; it is not a universal Ghost price or a stated U.S. base MSRP. The dealer listing is useful only as a dated example.
Audi’s global model page identifies the S8 TFSI at 420 kW (571 PS), but the evidence here does not provide a directly comparable current U.S. S8 price. Without prices for specified model years and the same market—and consistent treatment of options, taxes and transaction terms—calculating how large a “fraction” the Audi costs would be misleading. Audi’s S8 model page supplies the cited power figure, not a comparable U.S. price.

Check whether a specific S8 has predictive active suspension
Do not assume the feature is fitted just because a car is an S8. Audi’s U.S. page for the 2027 S8 describes predictive active suspension as optional. An earlier Audi A8 release said the feature was built ex factory only in the S8 within that model range at that time. Those statements concern different contexts; equipment availability can vary by market and model year.
- Ask the seller or Audi dealer for the vehicle’s build specification or equipment list.
- Have the specification checked against the VIN and the car’s market and model year.
- Confirm that the documentation names predictive active suspension; do not infer it from the trim badge alone.
