The models differ as much in powertrain and intended use as in acceleration. The driving-character notes below distinguish Audi’s own claims from what the published hardware and body styles suggest; they are not independent road-test impressions.
Which Audi RS models are covered here?
Audi Sport’s March 2026 portfolio overview says its range includes eight models, but the reviewed overview does not enumerate all eight entries. Model names, body styles and availability can vary by market, so the five model lines and RS Q8 versions below should not be treated as a complete global buying list. In particular, the RS 7 and earlier RS e-tron GT figures available here come from archived specifications, not confirmation of current regional availability.
The figures are manufacturer-published, not independent test results. Their dates and market limits matter: the RS Q8 figures come from a 2024 German-market release, the RS 7 figures from a 2023 German-market facts page, and the earlier RS e-tron GT figures from a 2021 facts page.
At a glance: powertrains and published performance
| Model or version | Format and powertrain | Published figures and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| RS 3 | Compact RS model; five-cylinder engine | Audi reported 400 PS for the updated model in 2025. Audi also called it the fastest compact car on the 20.832-kilometer Nürburgring Nordschleife “to date” at that time; the lap claim and comparison with the previous version are Audi’s, not independently verified here. |
| RS 5 | High-performance plug-in hybrid; 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 and electric motor | Audi’s 2026 announcement gives 470 kW (639 PS) system output, an optional 285 km/h top speed, and more than 80 km of electric driving in the city. The announcement does not specify a test cycle for the range figure. |
| RS Q8 | High-performance SUV; twin-turbo V8, permanent quattro all-wheel drive and eight-speed Tiptronic | Audi’s 2024 German-market release gives 441 kW (600 PS), 800 Nm and 0–100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. |
| RS Q8 performance | Higher-output RS Q8; twin-turbo V8, permanent quattro all-wheel drive and eight-speed Tiptronic | Audi’s 2024 German-market release gives 471 kW (640 PS), 850 Nm and 0–100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. |
| RS 7 Sportback performance | Sportback grand tourer; 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 | Audi’s archived 2023 German-market page lists 441 kW (600 PS), 800 Nm, 0–100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, and up to 305 km/h with the RS dynamic package plus. It lists 535–1,390 liters of luggage capacity. |
| Earlier RS e-tron GT | Electric grand tourer; one motor at each axle and all-wheel drive | Audi’s archived 2021 page lists 440 kW (598 PS), 830 Nm, 0–100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and a 250 km/h top speed. These are historical figures, not the current RS e-tron GT performance specification. |
What gives each RS model its character?
RS 3: compact dimensions and rear-axle torque allocation
The RS 3’s defining combination is a compact format and a five-cylinder engine. Its torque splitter can vary how drive torque is distributed between the rear wheels. Audi says this hardware improves agility and stability; an updated chassis-control algorithm introduced with the product upgrade, which Audi said had been on sale since late 2024, coordinates the system more precisely and allows earlier, better-controlled agility. Those are the manufacturer’s descriptions of the effect, not measured independent impressions.

- Highly detailed model of an Audi RS 5 Coupe
- 1: 24 scale
- Faithful recreation of the dashboard
- The package dimension of the product is: 47.6"L x34.2"W x25"H
Audi’s 2025 account says the updated RS 3 was more than seven seconds quicker around the Nordschleife than the pre-facelift version. The lap time and “fastest compact car” framing are Audi’s claims tied to that release, rather than a universal ranking of road-car handling.
RS 5: a plug-in hybrid with a rear transaxle quattro system
Audi describes the announced 2026 RS 5 as its first high-performance plug-in hybrid. Its system combines a 375 kW (510 PS) V6 with a 130 kW electric motor. Audi highlights a rear transaxle quattro system with Dynamic Torque Control, which it calls a world first, and positions the car for both everyday comfort and high performance. That positioning is Audi’s, not a substitute for an independent assessment of ride, steering or real-world electric range.

RS Q8: V8 performance in an SUV format
For the RS Q8 versions covered by Audi’s German-market release, the distinguishing detail is not just V8 output but how the permanent quattro system apportions torque. Audi says the center differential sends 40:60 front to rear in its default distribution, and can direct up to 70 percent forward or 85 percent rearward when slip occurs. Audi attributes more precise cornering and reduced understeer to that setup. The SUV body style makes this the lineup’s high-performance utility choice, although the cited release does not provide cargo-space figures.
RS 7 Sportback: grand-touring pace with liftback-style cargo room
The archived RS 7 Sportback performance pairs a V8 with a Sportback body and a substantial stated luggage range. Audi lists standard permanent quattro and adaptive air suspension; Dynamic Ride Control is an option on the archived model. That combination makes the RS 7 evidence useful for understanding the grand-tourer-and-cargo trade-off, but its 2023 Germany-specific data should not be taken as a current specification or proof that the car is available in a given market.

RS e-tron GT: low-slung electric grand tourer
Audi’s 2021 description emphasizes low seating, a long-distance grand-touring mission and a battery-mounted low center of gravity. One motor at each axle provides electric all-wheel drive. Those features suggest a different kind of RS character from the combustion models: electric propulsion and a low seating position rather than a high-revving engine identity. Audi’s March 2026 overview confirms an RS e-tron GT performance in the portfolio, but the detailed specification cited here belongs to an earlier version, so it cannot establish the current car’s output, acceleration or range.
How to choose among the formats
- Prioritize compact dimensions and a distinctive engine: the RS 3 is the compact, five-cylinder option, with Audi emphasizing its rear-axle torque-splitting technology.
- Want combustion and electric drive in one performance car: the announced RS 5 is the lineup’s high-performance plug-in hybrid, with Audi highlighting its rear transaxle and electric city driving.
- Need an SUV body style: consider the RS Q8 versions, comparing their manufacturer-published output and acceleration against the practical needs of your household. The cited release does not quantify their cargo capacity.
- Prefer a Sportback grand tourer with stated luggage capacity: the RS 7 offers that combination in the archived specification, but verify whether a current version is offered in your market before treating it as a purchase option.
- Want an electric grand-touring format: the RS e-tron GT is the electric choice identified in Audi’s current overview. Use current, market-specific specifications for a buying decision rather than carrying over the 2021 figures.
What these published specifications can—and cannot—tell you
Output and acceleration are useful for separating versions, but they do not establish which RS car steers best, rides most comfortably, brakes most consistently or has the greatest real-world range. The available Audi material describes technical systems and manufacturer positioning rather than comparable independent tests across the range. For a current shortlist, confirm the model year, body style, equipment, prices and availability with Audi in your country; pay particular attention to the archived RS 7 and RS e-tron GT data and the German-market RS Q8 figures.
