The wider C-series family began in 1968, so the A6 is the continuation of a line that includes four Audi 100 generations. Audi called the 2025 A6 the ninth C-series generation. Generation codes and model-year boundaries are not interchangeable: exact years, equipment and powertrains vary by market, body style and trim, and the available history does not establish a complete year-by-year change log for every country.
How the Audi 100 became the A6
Audi places the start of the C-series in 1968, when the Audi 100 entered the premium mid-size segment. Audi identifies the Audi 100 generations as C1 through C4, and says the model accumulated 3.2 million sales, a figure Audi reported in May 2025. In its April 2025 retrospective, Audi counted 9,836,762 C-series vehicles built across the family.
The name changed in 1994, after Audi introduced the A8 and A4. That was a significant badge and design update, but not an entirely new car at that moment: Audi says the main body remained unchanged. Its account describes new bumpers and front apron, revised headlamp lenses, new indicator and tail lights, and body-color side trims, handles, mirrors and bumpers.
Audi says that one year after market launch, the A6 received newly developed, more powerful four- and six-cylinder five-valve engines with a variable-length intake manifold. The four-cylinder also gained variable camshaft adjustment. Audi Tradition reported that almost 291,000 vehicles of this fourth C-series generation had been produced before the factory holidays in August 1997.

What the generation codes mean—and what they do not
The C-code identifies a generation within Audi’s broader C-series history; it is not, by itself, a universal model-year range. Audi’s 2025 history calls the new A6 the ninth C-series generation, continuing the family after the C1–C4 Audi 100. That framing matters: saying “nine A6 generations” would incorrectly count the Audi 100 years as A6-badged cars.
Audi’s published history establishes the broad lineage, but not a complete global table of each generation’s start and end model years, facelift years, engines, or standard and optional equipment. Those details need to be checked against records for the specific country and model. A car’s registration or model year may also differ from the generation’s introduction or production dates.

How the previous generation changed the cabin
Audi’s archived digitalization overview offers a specific example of how the A6’s interior controls evolved before the 2025 replacement. It describes MMI touch response replacing the previous rotary/pushbutton control and many physical buttons with two tilted touch displays. The displays provided tactile and acoustic feedback. Audi also described a 12.3-inch virtual cockpit as part of MMI navigation plus. These are equipment examples from the German-market context of Audi’s page, not proof that every trim or market received them.
What Audi said about the 2025 C9 launch
In its May 19, 2025 announcement, Audi called the new A6 C9 the ninth generation. The company said the Avant had been available across Europe since May 16, with the Sedan planned for launch at the end of July. Audi also described plug-in-hybrid versions of both body styles alongside gasoline and diesel engines with mild-hybrid technology. These were launch-time European statements, not a guarantee of identical timing or powertrain availability in every country or in later model years.

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner described the Sedan as uniting elegant, dynamic design with aerodynamics, efficient high-performance drive systems and suspension technology aimed at combining sportiness and comfort. That is Audi’s own product characterization, not an independent assessment.
Keep RS 6 changes separate from the standard A6 timeline
The RS 6 is a performance branch, so an RS-specific update should not be treated as a change to every A6. Audi’s RS 6 history notes a product enhancement for the C5 RS 6 in 2001. It is useful context for the family, but it does not establish a general A6 generation update or apply to all C5 cars.

How to identify a specific A6 model year
For a particular vehicle, start with its market and model year, then confirm its generation, body style, engine and trim from market-specific vehicle records or the car’s documentation. A generation overview can place the car in the C-series lineage, but it cannot reliably tell you whether a particular engine or feature was standard, optional or offered in that country during that model year. Audi’s own histories are useful for the milestones above; they do not substitute for a full local-year specification guide.
