It depends on the version and market: Audi’s European A5 range spans 150 to 367 PS, while BMW’s US 2025 3 Series spans 255 hp in the 330i to 386 hp of system output in the M340i. Those figures do not establish that every A5 is more powerful than every 3 Series. BMW has since announced an eighth-generation 3 Series, including a 437-hp gasoline M350 xDrive, so a useful comparison must identify the model year and trim.
“Audi A5” and “BMW 3 Series” each cover more than one power level
The headline claim that Audi gives the A5 more power is only meaningful when it names the exact versions being compared. Audi’s new A5 family launched in Germany and other European markets in November 2024; its official figures include both ordinary A5 models and the higher-performance S5. BMW’s US 2025 figures likewise distinguish the 330i from the M340i.

Which A5 has more power than which 3 Series?
In the European figures above, the A5 TFSI rated at 150 PS is not a direct numerical match for the US 330i’s 255 hp: they describe different markets and use different units. The 204 PS A5 and 367 PS S5 are also distinct versions, and comparing either with a US BMW figure would still mix market specifications. A valid head-to-head claim needs matching market, model year, body style, and performance grade.

Within BMW’s US 2025 lineup, the 330i and M340i themselves differ substantially: BMW lists 255 hp for the 330i and 386 hp of maximum system output for the M340i. That is why an unqualified statement that “the A5” beats “the 3 Series” can mislead: the result changes with the selected trim.
BMW’s announced eighth-generation 3 Series changes the context
On September 29, 2026, BMW announced an eighth-generation 3 Series family with electric and gasoline versions. Its announcement lists the gasoline M350 xDrive at 437 hp. This is an announced new generation, not the US 2025 330i or M340i specification, so it should not be folded into a comparison as though all figures describe one model year.

Power is only one part of the comparison
Peak output does not by itself tell you which car is quicker or the better fit. Compare like-for-like versions and check torque, acceleration, drivetrain, body style, efficiency, equipment, and price. Audi’s European A5 technical page and BMW’s US 2025 announcement do not provide a matched-market comparison across all those measures, so their figures should not be presented as a complete verdict on the cars.

One useful Audi-specific reference is the German-market MY2026 A5 TDI rated at 150 kW (204 hp) and 400 Nm, with a manufacturer-listed 0–100 km/h time of 7.7 seconds. Audi’s German launch material lists the A5 Sedan TFSI 110 kW from €45,200 and the S5 Sedan from €78,500, and says its prices and equipment refer to Germany and may change. BMW’s US 2025 release lists a 330i base MSRP of $45,500 before $1,175 destination and handling. These are not directly comparable prices: they differ by market, currency, model specification, and potentially included equipment.
