The comparison is not between two equivalent new-car model years: Audi’s published U.S. specifications cover the 2025 A5 Sportback, while Volkswagen’s cited Arteon powertrain update is for 2022 and IIHS ratings are for 2023. The A5 offers a documented choice of 201- or 261-hp quattro versions; Volkswagen’s 2022 Arteon update raised output to 300 hp. In practice, shoppers are weighing a newer-spec A5 against a used Arteon—and should confirm the exact year, trim, equipment, and condition of any car they consider.
What years and versions are being compared?
This is a U.S.-market comparison using Audi’s 2025 A5 Sportback specifications, Volkswagen’s information about the 2022 Arteon update, and IIHS pages for both 2023 models. Volkswagen’s connected-services compatibility page lists Arteon model years through 2023. These sources do not establish current new-car inventory or announce a formal discontinuation date, so check local availability rather than assuming a new Arteon can—or cannot—be ordered.
Audi lists two 2025 A5 Sportback configurations, both with quattro all-wheel drive. The Arteon’s 300-hp specification comes from Volkswagen’s 2022 update and should not be assumed for every used example. Check the vehicle’s model year, trim, VIN-specific equipment, and service history before comparing listings.

Audi’s figures are published 2025 specifications and EPA estimates; Audi marks its specifications preliminary and subject to change, and actual mileage varies. Volkswagen’s figures describe the engine update introduced for the 2022 model year, not a matched-year comparison with either 2025 A5. The stated outputs make the Arteon the highest-powered entry here, but they do not establish a complete performance or fuel-economy ranking across specific used cars.

What do the published starting prices tell you?
Audi lists a starting MSRP of $46,300 for the 2025 A5 Sportback 40 TFSI quattro and $48,400 for the 45 TFSI quattro. Those are manufacturer starting prices, excluding destination, taxes, title, options, and dealer charges; they are not transaction prices. The cited sources do not establish a comparable current used-market price for the Arteon. Compare actual local listings, mileage, options, condition, warranty coverage, and service records rather than treating the Audi MSRPs as a direct price comparison.
Are they equally practical?
Audi describes the A5 Sportback as a five-door body with cargo versatility. Volkswagen characterizes the Arteon as combining coupe-like styling with midsize-sedan space and flexibility. Those descriptions do not supply comparable cargo-volume measurements or prove which car fits more luggage or passengers. If practicality decides the purchase, bring the items you carry, check rear-seat fit in person, and compare measured cargo specifications for the exact model years and configurations.

Which one is safer?
Both the 2023 Audi A5 Sportback and 2023 Volkswagen Arteon have IIHS Top Safety Pick+ listings, and the IIHS pages report Good ratings across the crashworthiness categories shown for each. The award is useful context, not a guarantee that every trim has identical equipment.
- Audi A5 Sportback: IIHS notes that headlights vary by trim or option. Blind-spot detection and rear automatic braking are listed as optional.
- Volkswagen Arteon: IIHS lists blind-spot detection and rear automatic braking as standard.
Check the equipment on the specific car, especially if a driver-assistance feature is important to you. Model-year ratings and equipment context matter when comparing a used vehicle with a newer one.

What should an Arteon buyer check about connected services?
Volkswagen’s connected-services compatibility page lists the Arteon for model years 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. It also says Road Awareness Alerts and Vehicle H.E.L.P. are excluded for all Arteon model years. Eligibility and available features may depend on the vehicle and software and can change, so confirm service availability for the exact car before relying on it.

- Consider the 2025 A5 Sportback if you want a car with published current model-year specifications, standard quattro in the listed versions, and a choice between lower fuel consumption and quicker stated acceleration. Audi’s 40 TFSI is the more economical of the two on its EPA estimates; the 45 TFSI has more power and the quicker published 0–60 time.
- Consider a used Arteon if its styling, space-oriented liftback design, or the 300-hp specification of the 2022 update suits you—and the particular car’s price, condition, equipment, and history check out. Verify that its engine and features match the listing rather than generalizing from the update announcement.
The available official information does not settle which has lower ownership costs, a better reliability record, a better current-market value, or more cargo space. Those decisions require vehicle-specific checks and comparable listings.
