Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, and Mercedes-AMG V12s differ in design, installation, and service needs. A problem reported for one model is not evidence that V12 engines generally share that fault. Nor does a mileage claim for one car establish a typical lifespan for the layout.

The detailed fault examples available are specific to the classic V12 Vanquish. Treat them as inspection leads, not a universal checklist for every V12.

Engine, oil, and cooling
- Oil leaks and misfires: The guide links some misfire codes to oil leaks from failed PCV valves in the vacuum system or leaking seals around the spark plugs. It describes failed coils or plugs as less common in this model. Check for leaks and have the cause of any misfire diagnosed rather than assuming the engine needs major work.
- Oil on sensors: Inspect for oil leaks affecting sensors.
- Coolant leaks: Check around the front water manifold and thermostat-housing pipes.
- Auxiliary idlers: Listen for squeaks that may point to worn idlers.
If the check-engine light is on, an OBD-II reader can help retrieve codes as an initial check. A basic reader may not provide model-specific coverage, and a code does not by itself identify a failed component. Seek diagnosis from a technician familiar with the car. - Check that the paddle-shift system operates properly and that the gearbox does not drop into neutral.

- Inspect the front subframe and its mounting points for corrosion.
- Listen for suspension knocks and check bushes and mounts for deterioration.

How V12 ownership risks vary by model
A used-car comparison of the Ferrari 550 Maranello, Lamborghini Murciélago, Aston Martin DBS, and Mercedes CL 65 AMG describes distinct model-specific budget risks. It reports timing-belt and gearbox concerns for the Ferrari; engine-out work for clutch replacement or valve adjustment on the Lamborghini; and ignition-coil and front-axle concerns on the Mercedes-AMG. How to assess a V12 before buying or continuing to drive it
- Identify the exact vehicle. Record model, engine generation, year, and market specification; then find the schedule and known issues that apply to that car.
- Review the service record. Look for dated invoices and evidence that required work was completed on schedule. Investigate gaps rather than relying on a seller’s description alone.
- Check the car in operation. Have a qualified technician assess cold-start and warm-running behavior, warning lamps, stored codes, leaks, unusual noises, and smoke.
- Inspect systems beyond the engine. Include cooling, ignition, transmission, electronics, chassis, and suspension, with model-specific attention to known concerns.
- Confirm local support and costs. Check whether a marque specialist, suitable diagnostic equipment, and parts are available locally, and set a repair budget for the individual car.
A marque-qualified pre-purchase inspection is especially useful when checks span several systems or require model-specific diagnostic knowledge. If the vehicle already has a warning light, treat an OBD-II scan as a starting point, not a substitute for professional diagnosis.

Use manufacturer information for the vehicle, not the cylinder layout
Follow the manufacturer’s schedule for the specific model and market, and check for applicable recalls or service actions by VIN. Lamborghini says its Service Information Portal provides independent operators with maintenance and repair information and software for Lamborghini vehicles from Gallardo model year 2010 onward. That is one documented example of model-specific information access; it does not establish equivalent access for other marques or mean every repair is suitable for independent servicing. The evidence available here does not establish a cross-manufacturer V12 failure rate, universal ranking, or annual ownership-cost figure. The practical question is whether the particular car has been maintained correctly, its known model-specific faults have been addressed, and competent support is available.
