Unibody pickups can be a better fit for daily driving and light-duty hauling, but they are not universally better than body-on-frame trucks. The evidence here supports three current U.S. examples—the Ford Maverick, Honda Ridgeline and Hyundai Santa Cruz—not four. Rather than invent a fourth, this guide compares what the documented examples show and where their capabilities differ.
What “unibody” means in a pickup
A unibody vehicle integrates structural body components instead of mounting a separate cab and bed on a distinct ladder frame. That describes how the structure is built; it does not, by itself, establish how much a truck can carry, tow or handle off pavement.
Honda’s historical explanation of the Ridgeline describes its design as unibody construction combined with a lower integrated ladder frame and reinforced structure. Honda contrasts that approach with conventional body-on-frame construction, which it says can suit hauling, towing, commercial cargo needs and production flexibility across vehicle configurations. Those are Honda’s descriptions of the trade-off, not a rule that applies identically to every truck.
Where unibody pickups can make sense
For a buyer who spends most of the week commuting and needs a bed for occasional cargo, a unibody pickup may offer a useful combination of everyday refinement, integrated packaging and light-duty truck utility. Honda has attributed ride and handling refinement in the Ridgeline to its unibody construction and independent suspension. That is Honda’s manufacturer claim, made at the Ridgeline’s 2017 launch, rather than independent proof that every unibody pickup rides better.

The category still has meaningful limits. In a 2026 Federal Register document, NHTSA distinguishes small unibody pickups such as the Maverick and Santa Cruz from a midsize body-on-frame pickup such as the Tacoma, stating that they do not have the same capabilities and functionality. That makes “better” a use-case question: the right comparison is the truck’s actual payload, towing configuration, bed utility, cabin needs and off-road equipment.
Three current examples and their documented capabilities
The table uses current-model figures where the cited specifications provide them. These are manufacturer ratings, not guarantees that every vehicle with the same model name has the same capacity. The Santa Cruz figures below come from a June 2025 comparison and are not verified 2026 specifications.

How to compare the numbers without being misled
Check payload with the truck loaded
Payload is the weight the vehicle carries, not just cargo placed in the bed. Passengers and cargo use it too, as does the trailer’s tongue load. A high towing rating does not mean the truck can tow that trailer while also carrying any desired passengers and gear. Use the payload information for the specific vehicle and account for the actual load.
Match towing claims to the exact configuration
The Maverick’s 4,000 lb maximum is conditional on AWD and the 4K Tow Package; the standard hybrid is rated at 2,000 lb. The Ridgeline’s listed 5,000 lb towing figure is paired with trim-dependent payload ratings, so it should not be read as permission to load the vehicle to its payload maximum at the same time. Honda advises considering the engine, transmission, tires, brakes and passenger and cargo load when assessing towing. For any specific truck, follow its owner’s manual and vehicle labels.

Think about the bed as a working space
Volume alone does not tell you whether an item will fit. Compare bed length with the tailgate up and down, width between the wheel wells, and how cargo can be secured. The Ridgeline adds an in-bed trunk, and Honda lists 350 lb capacity for each heavy-duty bed tie-down cleat. That rating applies to the cleat, not to a strap; check the truck manual and the cargo-securing product’s own load rating.
Choose for the terrain and routine, not the body label
Ride impressions and “truck-like” character depend on the particular model and configuration. A June 2025 Edmunds comparison distributed by AP described the Maverick as more truck-like and the Santa Cruz as more crossover-like in comfort, but that is dated comparison evidence, not a current model-year test. If you regularly drive rough trails or need a particular off-road feature, compare the actual equipment and intended terrain rather than assuming the construction type settles the question.

Which kind of buyer might prefer each?
Ford Maverick: compact dimensions and configurable light-duty utility
The Maverick’s published XLT figures show why configuration matters: the 4,000 lb maximum tow rating requires AWD and the 4K Tow Package, while the standard hybrid is rated at 2,000 lb. Its bed is 4 ft 5 in long with 33.3 cu ft of cargo volume. A buyer should verify the exact powertrain, drivetrain and payload rating of the truck being considered rather than treating the XLT maximums as universal.
Honda Ridgeline: bed storage and a 5,000 lb tow rating
The 2026 Ridgeline combines a listed 5,000 lb tow rating with trim-dependent payload of 1,509–1,583 lb. Its 33.9 cu ft bed includes a separate 7.3 cu ft in-bed trunk, and the bed is 50 in wide between the wheel wells. Those details may matter to buyers who value enclosed bed storage and need to check whether their cargo fits the bed’s specific dimensions.

Hyundai Santa Cruz: compare the exact engine and model year
The available comparison reports up to 5,000 lb towing with the turbo engine and 3,500 lb with the base engine, alongside 1,411 lb payload. Because those figures were reported in June 2025 and are not verified 2026 specifications here, use them only as context; confirm current ratings for the exact Santa Cruz under consideration.
Why the title’s “four trucks” claim needs a correction
The documented current U.S. examples are the Maverick, Ridgeline and Santa Cruz. The evidence does not identify a fourth current model with comparable support, so naming one would risk implying a current, verified example without evidence. These three are enough to show that unibody pickups can serve real consumer and light-duty roles, but they do not prove that unibody construction is better for every truck buyer.
