Yes—there are still red-light cameras in California. State law allows local governments to use automated red-light enforcement, and San José began issuing full citations in January 2026. Sacramento has also announced that it is moving forward with a program. Whether a particular intersection has a camera depends on the local jurisdiction; there is no complete statewide camera-location list in the official sources cited here.
How California’s red-light camera rules work
California’s current framework includes more than one legal route for local automated red-light enforcement. The California DMV’s 2026 summary of SB 720 says the law “Allows local governments to use an alternative automated camera program to enforce red light violations.” It also says violations recorded under that system are subject only to civil penalties. California DMV: New laws in 2026
For a particular city, the relevant framework matters: Vehicle Code sections 21455.5 and 21455.9 are distinct provisions, and a locality’s program operates under its applicable authority. Drivers do not choose which route applies.
Section 21455.5: general program requirements
Section 21455.5 sets requirements for programs operating under that provision. Among them are advance public notice, a warning-only period, signage, government operation in cooperation with law enforcement, and rules for screening and handling information. The law also says revenue generation beyond actual operating costs cannot be considered when deciding whether to install or operate a system. For signage, the statute describes signs within 200 feet of the system, visible to approaching traffic in the directions being enforced. It also calls for a 30-day warning-only period and a public announcement at least 30 days before enforcement begins. Those are statutory requirements for programs under this section—not evidence that every camera in California follows an identical local notice format.
Section 21455.9: a separate framework for designated jurisdictions
Section 21455.9 establishes a separate framework for designated jurisdictions, with its own rules concerning notices, review, and use of program data. It also includes an impact-report requirement for programs implemented after January 1, 2026. The local program’s governing authority determines which procedures apply; do not assume every locality uses the same process. California Vehicle Code § 21455.9

Where cameras are being used or introduced
San José
San José’s program began sending warning notices on October 13, 2025, and began issuing full citations in January 2026. The city says the pilot is funded through City funds. Its evaluation and final report to City Council are planned for spring 2027; that report is a future milestone, not a completed assessment. City of San José: Red Light Camera Pilot Project
Sacramento
Sacramento says it is moving forward with an automated red-light camera enforcement program under SB 720. That establishes implementation activity, but the city page cited here does not establish that citations are already being issued. Check the city’s current program information for its latest status. How to find out whether a specific intersection has a camera
A statewide answer cannot confirm the status of a particular intersection. The official sources reviewed do not establish a comprehensive statewide inventory or total camera count. Check the city or county’s official red-light camera program page for current locations and enforcement status; if a location is not listed or the information is unclear, contact the local agency responsible for the program.

If you receive a camera notice
Read the notice from the issuing jurisdiction and follow its instructions, review options, and deadlines. Procedures can differ depending on the statutory route and local implementation, so a general statewide summary cannot establish the deadline or review process for an individual notice. Use the issuing city or county’s official information to confirm what applies.
