Short answer: Some driverless robotaxis are showing better safety results than human drivers within carefully defined service areas. But ordinary consumers still cannot buy a car that safely drives itself everywhere without supervision. In 2026, the sensible choice depends on whether you want supervised assistance, a bounded driverless ride, or a genuinely hands-off personal vehicle.
The bottom line for car buyers
In 2026, Level 4 driverless services can be safer than human driving in the areas and conditions for which they were designed. Waymo says its vehicles have completed more than 220 million fully autonomous miles through March 2026, with substantially fewer serious crashes than comparable human drivers. An independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety analysis also found that Waymo’s driverless cars crashed less often than people in the studied comparison.
That does not mean all autonomous vehicles are equally safe, or that self-driving cars are ready for unrestricted nationwide use. Consumer systems such as Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised), Ford BlueCruise and GM Super Cruise remain Level 2 driver assistance: the human must monitor the road continuously and remain responsible for driving. NHTSA says the highest level of automation currently available to consumers still requires full driver engagement and undivided attention.
Wait if you want a privately owned car in which you can sleep, work or stop paying attention. You do not necessarily need to wait if you want supervised assistance today or want to try a regulated robotaxi inside its approved service area.

What “self-driving” means in 2026
The phrase “self-driving” covers several very different technologies:
| Level | What the system does | Human responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Warnings or brief interventions | Human drives |
| 1 | Steering or speed assistance, one function at a time | Human continuously supervises |
| 2 | Steering and speed control together in some conditions | Human continuously supervises |
| 3 | Drives under specified conditions but can request a takeover | Human must be ready to take over |
| 4 | Drives without a human driver within a defined operating domain | No human driver required inside that domain |
| 5 | Drives everywhere in all conditions | No human driver required |
Level 2 and Level 4 should not be treated as interchangeable. A Waymo passenger may ride without driving inside a defined service area. A Tesla owner using FSD (Supervised) is still the driver. The system’s ability to steer, brake and change lanes does not remove that responsibility.
Are driverless robotaxis safer than human drivers?
The strongest public evidence currently comes from Waymo’s rider-only service. In its analysis of more than 220 million fully autonomous miles, Waymo reported:
- 94% fewer crashes involving serious or fatal injuries than human drivers in the same areas.
- 82% fewer crashes involving airbag deployment.
- 82% fewer crashes involving any reported injury.
These figures come from Waymo’s own methodology and are not a universal result for the autonomous-vehicle industry. Waymo’s published analysis should therefore be read as evidence about that service, fleet and operating domain—not proof that every system is safer than people.
Earlier peer-reviewed research examining 56.7 million rider-only miles also found statistically significant reductions in several crash-severity categories. The study is available through arXiv.
Independent analysis strengthens the case—but does not end the debate
In July 2026, IIHS reported that Waymo’s driverless cars crashed less often than human drivers after researchers adjusted the available data for geography and operating conditions. That is more meaningful than simply repeating a company’s marketing claim.

IIHS also emphasized why these comparisons remain difficult. Companies do not consistently report autonomous miles, operating conditions, crash severity or exposure in the same way. A raw crash count is nearly useless without knowing how many miles were driven and where.
The evidence supports a limited conclusion: a mature, geofenced Level 4 service may outperform human drivers within the environments for which it has been designed and evaluated. It does not establish that a robotaxi is safer in every city, weather condition or road situation.

Why safety comparisons are difficult
When evaluating any safety claim, ask:
- How many miles were driven?
- Were those miles autonomous or supervised?
- Was a safety driver present?
- Which cities, roads, speeds, weather conditions and times of day were included?
- Were crashes counted regardless of fault?
- What comparison group was used?
- Were the records based on police reports, insurance claims, company logs or NHTSA reports?
- Were minor incidents included?
- Was the analysis independently reviewed?
- Were the results statistically significant?
NHTSA’s Standing General Order requires specified crash reports involving automated-driving systems and certain Level 2 systems, including events involving fatalities, vulnerable road users, airbag deployment, tow-away damage and hospital transport. However, NHTSA notes that Level 2 systems may have weaker or delayed telemetry and may rely more heavily on consumer reporting. The datasets are therefore not perfectly comparable.
What experts and regulators still worry about
Emergency responders
A vehicle can avoid routine collisions yet still create a serious hazard during an emergency response. NHTSA warned in 2026 that automated vehicles must improve how they interact with first responders.
Important questions include whether the vehicle can recognize police hand signals, yield correctly to fire apparatus, navigate cones and flares, avoid blocking an emergency scene, and understand responders standing in the roadway. Aggregate crash statistics do not answer all of these questions.
Construction zones
Temporary road layouts are difficult because cones, barriers, flaggers and temporary lane markings can contradict permanent road geometry or older map data. A vehicle may perform well on ordinary streets yet hesitate, stop or make an incorrect decision when a lane suddenly closes.

Construction-related reports involving autonomous vehicles illustrate why “works on mapped roads” is not the same as “reliable under changing road conditions.” Readers should verify any recall through NHTSA’s recall database rather than relying on secondary summaries.
School buses and unusual traffic control
Stopped school buses, temporary signs and unusual traffic patterns test legal and social interpretation as much as object detection. 2026 reporting raised concerns about autonomous vehicles handling school buses and other unusual traffic situations. Rare, high-consequence events deserve separate evaluation even when average crash rates look strong.
Bad weather and poor visibility
Fog, heavy rain, snow, glare, darkness, road spray and dirty sensors can obscure lane markings and road hazards. A 2026 report described a NHTSA investigation involving Tesla systems and poor-visibility situations; readers should consult the underlying regulatory documents for the precise scope and status of that investigation. AP’s report is available here.
Human handoff failure
Level 2 systems create a risk that is different from fully driverless services: the driver may become complacent or distracted and fail to regain control quickly. Looking at a phone, sleeping or treating a hands-on-wheel sensor as proof of awareness defeats the intended safety model.

That is why “Supervised” is not a minor disclaimer; it defines how the system is supposed to be used.
Safety is not the same as reliability
Safety concerns crash frequency and severity. Reliability asks whether the vehicle consistently completes trips and handles the real world without unnecessary stops, cancellations or human intervention.

A robotaxi can be statistically safer yet less convenient than a human-driven car if it refuses certain roads, requires remote assistance, avoids severe weather, stops at unusual barriers or cannot identify a suitable pickup location. Reliability includes:
- Completing trips without unexpected pullovers.
- Handling construction and temporary signs.
- Responding appropriately to emergency scenes.
- Finding safe pickup and drop-off points.
- Managing blocked lanes and illegally parked vehicles.
- Operating consistently during software updates or service interruptions.
- Providing help when a passenger is confused, injured or stranded.
| Failure mode | Why it matters | Reader takeaway |
|---|---|---|
| Driver looks away in Level 2 mode | The system may not handle an emerging hazard | Supervised means continuously supervised |
| Temporary construction lane | Maps and permanent markings may conflict | Expect restrictions or hesitation |
| Emergency responder in the roadway | Gestures and scene context are difficult to interpret | Crash averages do not resolve this risk |
| School bus or temporary stop sign | Legal and contextual interpretation is required | Rare events need separate testing |
| Fog, snow, glare or heavy rain | Perception can degrade | Know the system’s weather limits |
| Blocked lane or illegal parking | The vehicle must negotiate with other road users | Safe does not always mean convenient |
| Remote-assistance delay | Human support may not be immediate | Ask how dead ends are handled |
| Sensor obstruction or damage | The vehicle may misperceive its surroundings | Do not ignore degraded-mode warnings |
What about Tesla Full Self-Driving?
Tesla calls its system Full Self-Driving (Supervised), not autonomous driving. Tesla’s documentation says the driver must monitor the vehicle and intervene when necessary. Its safety reporting is manufacturer-produced, uses Tesla’s methodology and should not be treated as an independent national safety evaluation. Tesla’s safety report and current product information are useful for understanding Tesla’s claims, but Waymo’s Level 4 results cannot be transferred automatically to Tesla’s Level 2 system.

- Waymo: a passenger may ride in a driverless vehicle inside a defined service area.
- Tesla FSD (Supervised): the owner remains the driver and must pay attention continuously.
The same distinction applies broadly to advanced highway-assistance systems. Ford BlueCruise, GM Super Cruise, Mercedes-Benz Drive Pilot and similar products should be evaluated by their actual automation level, operating restrictions and driver-monitoring requirements—not by names that include words such as “pilot,” “cruise” or “self-driving.”

Wait if you want hands-off ownership
Waiting is rational if your goal is a privately owned vehicle in which you can sleep, work or watch video while traveling. It also makes sense if you dislike subscriptions, drive frequently in snow or poorly marked rural areas, or are buying mainly because you expect a current system to become fully autonomous soon.
NHTSA was still working in 2026 on automated-vehicle performance standards and changes to the exemption process for vehicles that do not fit conventional federal rules. That evolving framework is another reason to be cautious about treating today’s feature roadmap as a guaranteed future product.
Waiting may bring more standardized crash reporting, independent testing, better adverse-weather performance, stronger first-responder protocols and clearer information about remote assistance, hardware support, insurance and liability.

Buy a supervised system now only for what it does today
A current vehicle may be reasonable if you want lane centering, adaptive cruise control and other assistance, and you are willing to remain fully attentive. Buy based on present capability, not a promise that a software update will remove your responsibility later.
Before purchasing, check the current regional availability, hardware requirements, subscription terms, operating limitations, recall status and insurance implications. Do not use a supervised system as permission to sleep, text or stop monitoring the road.
Try a robotaxi without buying an autonomous car
A regulated robotaxi can be a practical way to experience bounded Level 4 autonomy. Check whether the service covers your actual neighborhood, how it handles bad weather and service interruptions, whether remote assistance is used, and whether it supports your needs for child seats, wheelchairs, pets and luggage.
Taking a Waymo ride and buying a Tesla with FSD are fundamentally different decisions. One is a trip inside a defined service area without a human driver. The other is ownership of a supervised assistance system for which you remain responsible.

Advantages and unresolved trade-offs
Potential advantages
- Reduced exposure to distraction, fatigue, intoxication and aggressive driving.
- Continuous monitoring that does not become tired or angry.
- Greater mobility for people who cannot drive.
- Potentially fewer private-car trips in dense urban areas.
- Large operational datasets that can support system improvement.
Potential disadvantages
- Rare perception or software failures can be difficult to anticipate.
- Temporary traffic patterns remain challenging.
- Vehicles may be conservative, slow or inconvenient.
- Drivers can misuse supervised systems.
- Safety evidence remains concentrated in limited cities and conditions.
- Crash data is not standardized across manufacturers.
- Remote assistance, cybersecurity, privacy, insurance and liability create new risks.
- Regulation and public acceptance are still developing.
How to judge the next safety claim
Be skeptical of statements that omit automation level, geography, mileage or comparison method. “Safer than humans” should always mean safer than a defined human-driver group over a defined number of miles and conditions. “No crashes” may simply mean the sample is too small, the exposure is unknown or minor incidents were excluded.
Also distinguish company claims from independent evidence. Waymo’s results are important but company-generated. Tesla’s reports are also manufacturer-generated. IIHS’s analysis strengthens the evidence for Waymo specifically; it does not validate every autonomous-driving system.
Verdict: should you wait?
Wait if you want an affordable, privately owned car that drives itself anywhere without supervision. That product is not generally available to U.S. consumers in 2026.
Do not assume that “self-driving” branding means driverless operation. Most consumer systems remain Level 2 and require your full attention. But you do not necessarily need to wait to use bounded autonomy: a Level 4 robotaxi may be a reasonable option in its approved service area, and supervised driver assistance can be useful when treated as assistance rather than a replacement for the driver.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe safest interpretation of the evidence is qualified, not sensational: try bounded autonomy if its limits fit your needs, buy supervised assistance only for its current capabilities, and wait if hands-off ownership is the outcome you actually want.
