Short answer: Kia’s reliability standing has improved in some industry measures, but the evidence does not support treating every Kia—or every model year—as equally dependable. Consumer Reports’ 2026 rankings place Kia 10th for new-car reliability but 21st for used-car reliability. For a specific purchase, the model year, engine or other powertrain, maintenance record, and VIN-specific recall status matter more than the brand name alone.
What the latest reliability rankings say about Kia
The current evidence is mixed because different studies measure different things. Consumer Reports’ 2026 brand page ranks Kia 10th for new-car reliability and 21st for used-car reliability. Those are separate rankings, not a single lifetime-durability score; Consumer Reports also evaluates vehicles on other factors when calculating overall scores. Consumer Reports’ Kia page provides its current brand rankings and methodology context.
J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study is about reported problems among original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. The study surveyed 33,268 owners and reported an industry average of 204 problems per 100 vehicles. That measure counts reported problems, including issues with software and infotainment; it does not mean that 204 percent of vehicles broke down, nor does it predict how long a particular Kia will last. J.D. Power’s 2026 study release describes the cohort and findings.
For historical context, J.D. Power reported 196 problems per 100 vehicles for Kia in its 2025 study. That is the study’s problems-per-100-vehicles score, not a breakdown rate. In its 2022 study, J.D. Power said Korean brands Kia, Genesis, and Hyundai occupied three of the top four positions. These results help explain Kia’s rise in some dependability rankings, but a past placement cannot establish the reliability of every later model or powertrain. J.D. Power’s 2025 study and 2022 study release report those dated results.

What “bargain to contender” does—and does not—mean
Kia’s reputation arc is best described as a change in its performance in some survey rankings, rather than proof that every Kia is now trouble-free. Initial quality, predicted reliability for a new vehicle, three-year dependability, owner satisfaction, used-car reliability, and repair costs are different measures. A strong result on one does not automatically establish a strong result on the others.
J.D. Power’s 2026 study reflects the importance of ownership over time. Jason Norton, the organization’s director of auto benchmarking, said: “As owners hold onto their vehicles longer, the long-term ownership experience matters more than ever.” The study release includes the statement.

Which Kia models have engine-related recall concerns?
Federal recall materials identify specific Kia model-year and engine configurations—not every vehicle wearing the badge. NHTSA-hosted material on the Theta II engine campaign covers specified 2011–2013 Optima, 2012–2014 Sorento, and 2011–2013 Sportage configurations, with engine and production-date qualifications. The campaign information describes inspection and, where applicable, engine replacement. Check the campaign document for the exact affected configurations: Kia Motors America/NHTSA Theta II Engine Safety Recall SC147.
A separate NHTSA investigation summary describes other engine-related recalls across named Kia models and model years. Remedies typically included inspection and, when needed, engine replacement; applicability depends on the vehicle’s specific configuration. NHTSA’s ODI investigation summary PE19-004 documents the field actions.

There is also regulatory context around recall handling: in 2020, NHTSA announced consent orders after assessing that Hyundai and Kia had conducted untimely recalls involving more than 1.6 million Theta II-equipped vehicles and had inaccurately reported certain information. That announcement concerns the companies’ recall conduct; it is not a reliability rating or a failure-rate estimate for current Kia models. NHTSA’s consent-orders announcement gives the agency’s account.

How to check a used Kia before buying
- Match the evidence to the car. Identify the exact model year and powertrain, then compare it with reliability information for vehicles of similar age and configuration. Do not use a brand ranking as a substitute for model-specific evidence.
- Check the VIN for open recalls. Enter the car’s 17-digit VIN in NHTSA’s recall lookup. NHTSA says an unrepaired recall will appear in the results and advises contacting a dealer to arrange the free repair.
- Confirm completed campaign work. Ask the seller for service records and have a Kia dealer confirm whether applicable recall or campaign repairs were completed. A recall lookup identifies open recalls; it does not provide a complete maintenance or repair history.
- Get an independent pre-purchase inspection. A clean recall result does not establish that the vehicle is mechanically sound. Have a qualified mechanic inspect the individual car and review its service and accident history.
How to compare Kia reliability claims fairly
- Use the same vehicle age and cohort: a new-car prediction is not directly comparable with a study of three-year-old vehicles or used-car history.
- Use the same metric: problems per 100 vehicles, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, repair costs, and recall counts describe different outcomes.
- Compare like with like: model, model year, and powertrain matter; a gas sedan and a hybrid SUV are not interchangeable reliability examples.
- Account for the specific vehicle: mileage, maintenance, accident history, open recalls, and completed campaign repairs can change the risk of a particular used car.
- Keep the geography in view: the cited rankings and recall guidance are U.S.-focused and do not establish equivalent results in every market.
