There isn’t one reliable answer for every Kia hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and EV. Survey results differ by model, year, powertrain, and survey method. Broad industry data suggests conventional hybrids have generally tracked gasoline cars more closely than EVs and plug-in hybrids, while Kia-specific survey results and early owner accounts show a mixed picture.
What broad reliability surveys say about hybrids and EVs
Consumer Reports’ 2024 reliability survey, as reported by the Associated Press, found conventional hybrids about as reliable as gasoline vehicles on average. EVs and plug-in hybrids had more reported problems. Those are category-wide findings, not scores for Kia vehicles.
| Finding | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|
| EVs had 42% more reported problems than gasoline autos, on average | Consumer Reports’ 2024 survey, reported by the Associated Press. It covered mainly 2022–2024 model years and subscriber responses; AP noted that subscribers do not represent all U.S. vehicle buyers. |
| Plug-in hybrids had 70% more reported problems than gasoline vehicles | Consumer Reports’ 2024 survey, reported by the Associated Press; this is a category-level comparison, not a Kia-specific result. |
| EVs had 79% more reported problems than gasoline autos | Consumer Reports’ 2023 survey comparison, as cited by AP in 2024. It is a result from the prior year’s comparison, not the 2024 figure. |
| Conventional hybrids were about as reliable as gasoline vehicles on average | Consumer Reports’ 2024 survey, as reported by AP; no Kia-specific score is established by this finding. |
The reported percentages describe problems, not the probability that a particular car will fail. Consumer Reports’ automobile test center head Jake Fisher told AP that automakers should improve as they gain experience with new technologies and platforms. He also said CR tests found gas-electric hybrids can be quieter, quicker, and more pleasant to drive than gasoline-only counterparts.
What Kia-specific survey results do—and don’t—show
What Car? reported a 96.4% reliability result for 2016–2022 Kia Niro hybrids and plug-in hybrids, and 94.9% for the EV6 in the survey’s 2021–present framing. Its owner survey asked thousands of owners about problems during the previous 24 months. The publication year and precise scoring definition are not visible in the available result, so these figures are best treated as results from that survey—not as directly comparable failure rates or a definitive Kia ranking.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Effortlessly removes corrosion】The dual-ended battery post cleaning brush, made of stainless steel casing and with steel wire bristles, powerfully removes stubborn corrosion and oxides from battery terminals and clamps, ensuring optimal conductivity. In winter, clean terminals will help your car start more easily while reducing battery drain.
- 【Durable corrosion protection】Our premium fiber battery gaskets are suitable for both top-pole and side-pole batteries or cables, applicable to 6V and 12V batteries. They effectively block harmful acid mist and moisture, preventing corrosion around the battery terminals and significantly extending battery life. Gasket colors distinguish positive and negative terminals: red for positive (+) and green for negative (-).
- 【Battery terminal gasket protector dimensions】Outer ring diameter approximately 1.73 inches/44 mm; Inner ring diameter approximately 0.79 inches/20 mm; Inner ring diameter after removal approximately 1.18 inches/30 mm; The inner ring is removable to accommodate larger battery terminals.
- 【Easy to use】The battery terminal brush features a double-ended design, Simply remove the metal cap to reveal the internal brush, then press the other end onto the battery terminal and twist to clean. Cleaning takes only one minute. Tip: After cleaning, apply a thick layer of insulating grease to the terminals and contacts to reduce corrosion, prevent moisture, and improve weather resistance.
- 【Complete kit for full terminal maintenance】 This convenient set includes everything needed for routine battery care: 2 metal-case battery terminal cleaning brushes and 10 anti-corrosion fiber washers (5 red, 5 green). Ideal for cars, trucks, RVs, boats, and other 6V or 12V battery applications.
Consumer Reports search results identify owner-survey pages for the 2024 EV6 and EV9, as well as the 2025 Sorento Hybrid and Sportage PHEV. The surfaced results do not provide comparable scores or detailed reliability patterns for those models. The available evidence therefore does not support a complete side-by-side ranking of Kia’s current hybrid and EV lineup.
Keep model and powertrain distinctions intact: a result for an earlier Niro hybrid or PHEV does not establish reliability for a newer Niro EV, and an EV6 result does not predict the EV9. A conventional hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery EV have different systems and should not be treated as interchangeable survey subjects.

What early Kia owners report
Niro hybrid and plug-in hybrid accounts
In a discussion asking whether 2023–2024 Niro HEVs are reliable, owners describe varied experiences. Some report trouble-free use at higher mileage; others mention sensor faults, rattles, coolant concerns on earlier vehicles, or worries about a PHEV’s 12-volt battery. One commenter says some PHEV owners keep a jump pack. These are individual, self-selected accounts: they can help a buyer decide what to ask about, but they do not establish how common an issue is or whether a particular car will develop it.
EV repair and service accounts
A separate EV discussion includes one report of a Niro EV spending more than 30 days in service and another of an EV6 becoming inoperable. Other replies describe different service experiences. Those reports are not a typical repair-time estimate, but they make local support worth checking: ask whether the dealer services Kia EVs, how it handles diagnosis and parts delays, and whether loaner transportation is available during a lengthy repair.

Check the Niro floor-wiring recall by VIN
A Kia recall chronology filed with NHTSA identifies a floor-wiring concern in certain 2023–2025 Niro EV, Niro Hybrid, and Niro Plug-in Hybrid vehicles. Repeated adjustment of the manual front passenger seat could damage wiring and potentially affect the supplemental restraint system. Applicability depends on the vehicle’s configuration and VIN.
Kia’s chronology recorded four warranty claims and two technical cases involving four unique VINs. At the time of the filing, it reported no crashes, injuries, fatalities, or fires. Those case counts document the investigation; they are not a fleet-wide failure rate.

- Find the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the vehicle or its paperwork.
- Use the official NHTSA recall lookup or contact a Kia dealer to check whether that VIN is affected and whether the remedy has been completed.
- If a recall is open, confirm the repair process and timing with the dealer before purchase or continued use.
A model year alone cannot confirm whether an individual vehicle is included or repaired. Verify the exact VIN and remedy status.

How to assess a Kia hybrid or EV before buying
- Match the exact vehicle. Compare the same model year and powertrain—HEV, PHEV, or EV—rather than relying on a brand-wide average.
- Read survey results in context. Check which model years were covered, who responded, what period the survey asked about, and whether the result measures reported problems or a scored reliability rating.
- Check the specific VIN. Confirm open recalls and completed remedies; for the Niro wiring issue, configuration matters as well as model year.
- Ask about local service capacity. Confirm that a nearby dealer can service the powertrain and ask how it handles parts delays, transportation, and loaners. Owner posts show why service experience matters, but cannot predict your repair time.
- Inspect the individual vehicle. Review its maintenance and repair records and have it inspected by a qualified technician familiar with its powertrain. A survey result or owner anecdote cannot substitute for the condition of the car you are considering.
