Yes—many can work well as daily drivers, but practicality depends on the exact model and configuration, not just the SUV badge. A roomy cabin and quick acceleration may suit commuting and family duties, while fuel use, ride setup, controls, parking dimensions and cargo layout can make another version less convenient. Check the specific trim against your routine before deciding.
What makes one practical for everyday use?
A daily driver has to fit ordinary demands: carrying passengers and bags, navigating your usual roads and parking spaces, and providing a ride and controls you can live with. High performance does not automatically rule those needs out, but neither does a luxury badge guarantee that a particular SUV will suit them.
Compare the precise model year, powertrain, trim and equipment. Wheel and tire choices can affect comfort; powertrain packaging can change cargo capacity; and published figures do not tell you whether the vehicle feels easy to place in your own garage or comfortable on your commute.
Start with your routine
- Count how often you carry rear-seat passengers and whether they need room for longer trips.
- Check luggage space with the second row in use, not only with seats folded.
- Consider your typical parking spaces, garage opening and commute roads when assessing vehicle size and visibility.
- If considering a plug-in hybrid, include charging access and your likely driving mix in the decision.
- For towing, confirm the rating for the exact vehicle and equipment rather than relying on a model-family maximum.
How do the published figures compare?
These manufacturer specifications illustrate why configuration matters. They are published U.S. figures, not independent road-test results, and should be verified for the exact model year and vehicle. Cargo-volume methods can differ between brands, so cross-brand numbers are not necessarily measured on an identical basis.

BMW says actual mileage varies with driving habits, trip length and conditions. The BMW figures are specific to the listed configurations; they should not be treated as real-world outcomes for every driver or as directly comparable test results against the Mercedes or Porsche figures. The Cayenne page’s cargo and towing values are maximums; confirm the selected powertrain and equipment.
What the X5 example shows
Within one model line, the listed 0–60 mph time ranges from 5.3 seconds for the sDrive40i to 3.7 seconds for the M Competition. The M Competition’s published city/highway economy is also lower than the xDrive40i’s listed figures. Meanwhile, the xDrive50e has slightly different cargo figures from the conventional sDrive40i/xDrive40i versions, consistent with the need to check the powertrain rather than assume all X5s have identical capacity. What to make of the Cayenne and AMG GLE figures
Porsche’s U.S. Cayenne page gives seating, maximum cargo and towing figures, but those numbers alone do not settle day-to-day comfort or ease of loading. The Mercedes-Benz USA page describes the 2026 AMG GLE 53 as an AMG-enhanced 3.0-liter inline-six turbo engine with hybrid assist and lists city fuel economy of 18 mpg; that single city figure is not a complete efficiency comparison. Will it be comfortable and manageable as a daily driver?
Published specifications cannot tell you whether a seat, ride or interface will work for you. Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying-guide summary lists acceleration, ride comfort, braking, seat comfort and fit and finish among the X5’s strengths, while noting that its controls have a learning curve. On a test drive, use the conditions that resemble your routine rather than judging only a brief, fast drive. Sit in the back if you regularly carry passengers, try the controls you expect to use, assess visibility and parking, and pay attention to ride comfort on familiar road surfaces. If possible, check how your usual bags fit behind the second row.

The available figures do not establish a fair ranking for purchase price, insurance, maintenance, repairs or depreciation across these vehicles. - For a plug-in hybrid, consider whether you can charge regularly and whether your trips make that practical.
- Check current recalls and safety ratings for the exact model year and vehicle identification number through the relevant official databases.
A practical way to choose
- Shortlist exact versions. Record model year, trim, powertrain and major wheel or comfort options; a model name alone is not enough.
- Match space to real use. Check rear-seat room and cargo capacity with passengers aboard, then confirm folded-seat capacity if you need it.
- Compare operating needs. Review the exact fuel-economy label, charging requirements where applicable, towing rating and local insurance and service quotes.
- Try the daily tasks. Test the ride, seating, controls, visibility, parking and loading experience on a drive that resembles your normal use.
- Decide which trade-offs matter. If the performance version’s fuel use, ride or size conflicts with your routine, a less powerful configuration—or a different vehicle—may be the more practical choice.
