Are High Gas Prices Reviving U.S. EV Sales? Interest Is Up, but Sales Remain Below 2025

Higher fuel prices are renewing EV interest, but 2026 U.S. sales remain below 2025 levels. The distinction between shopping, survey responses, and completed sales matters.

Higher gasoline prices are renewing American drivers’ interest in electric vehicles, but the sales data available through August 2026 does not show a broad year-over-year rebound. Cox Automotive recorded a quarter-over-quarter increase in Q2 EV sales, while sales remained below Q2 2025; Kelley Blue Book reported the same mixed pattern in August. The evidence supports a potential demand tailwind—not proof that the fuel-price spike has already revived EV sales.

What changed at the pump in 2026?

Gasoline prices rose sharply. AAA reported a national average of $4.43 per gallon for regular gasoline on September 17, 2026, more than $1 above the year-earlier figure. The national average had reached a 2026 high of $4.56 on May 21. These are dated U.S. averages, not a current quote for any particular state or driver. AAA’s September 17 price update provides the dated figures.

Does higher gas translate into more EV buying?

It can make an EV more appealing, but interest, shopping activity, and completed purchases are different measures. In Cox Automotive’s April 2026 Q1 commentary, the company said it saw increased EV-related shopping traffic amid fuel-price volatility associated with the Middle East conflict. It also cautioned that online shopping is not a sale and that meaningful changes in the auto market take time. Kelley Blue Book managing editor Sean Tucker put the timing plainly: “A spike in actual sales would be unprecedented after just a month of high gas prices, because shopping for a new car is a long process influenced by many factors.” He also noted, “It’s not uncommon for us to see a spike in EV-related searches when gas prices rise. Searching is free.” Cox Automotive’s Q1 report commentary discusses the shopping activity and sales context.

Survey responses point in the same direction, but do not establish purchases. In the HERE-SBD EV Index 2026, seven in ten surveyed drivers said fuel-price increases had raised their interest in EVs. HERE’s summary describes more than 4,000 EV owners and non-owners across the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, India, and Australia. That result is international, not a U.S.-only estimate. The same summary says just 17% of ICE owners named an EV as the vehicle type they were most likely to purchase or lease next. HERE’s survey summary also identifies price, charging experience, and everyday fit as factors in adoption.

What do U.S. EV sales show so far?

The clearest pattern is a sequential improvement alongside year-over-year declines. Quarterly and monthly comparisons answer different questions: month-over-month figures show recent movement, while year-over-year figures compare with a prior period that was unusually strong in 2025.

Period Reported U.S. EV sales trend Market share and context
Q1 2026 216,399 EVs; down 27% year over year and 7.8% from Q4 2025. 5.8% of new-vehicle sales, unchanged from Q4 2025. Cox linked increased shopping traffic to fuel-price volatility but cautioned that shopping is not sales. Cox Automotive
Q2 2026 247,226 EVs; up 14.7% from revised Q1, but down 20.5% year over year. About 5.8% of new-vehicle volume. The year-over-year decline was smaller than Q1’s 27.3% decline. Cox Automotive/Kelley Blue Book
August 2026 New EV sales up 2.5% from July, down 46.9% year over year. 5.7% of new-vehicle sales. Used EV sales rose 25.9% month over month and 14.7% year over year. Kelley Blue Book

The August year-over-year drop needs context. Buyers rushed to purchase before the $7,500 federal credit expired in September 2025, making August 2025 an unusually high comparison point. The decline is real, but by itself it does not describe the direction of the latest monthly movement or prove that demand collapsed in August 2026.

Why fuel prices are only one part of the decision

Gas prices can affect the running-cost calculation, but the purchase decision also depends on the vehicle’s upfront price, access to charging, electricity costs, available models, and the buyer’s needs. The Transportation Energy Institute’s 2026 analysis found moderate correlations between annual gasoline prices and sales—0.46 for hybrids and 0.53 for battery-electric vehicles—but negative correlations in monthly data. It stresses that correlation does not establish that gasoline prices caused sales changes.

In reviewing earlier studies, the institute found a generally positive but moderate relationship between gasoline prices and BEV adoption. Its synthesis puts estimated BEV demand elasticity at roughly 0.5–0.9: illustratively, a 20% rise in fuel prices corresponds to about 10–18% more BEV sales, all else equal. That is an estimate drawn from prior studies, not a measured effect of the 2026 U.S. price increase. The institute says sustained increases over 6–18 months may be needed to meaningfully affect purchase decisions; a short spike is more likely to shift interest and consideration. The Transportation Energy Institute’s 2026 analysis explains its limits and findings.

How price and access shape the real-world choice

Average transaction prices offer context, not a personal cost comparison. Kelley Blue Book reported an August 2026 average new-EV transaction price of $54,754, down 1.3% from July and 2.8% from a year earlier. The average new EV carried a $4,847 premium over gasoline vehicles. For used EVs, the average listing price was $37,441, and the premium over gasoline vehicles had narrowed to 7.8%. KBB also reported EV inventory only two days above gasoline-vehicle inventory. These averages do not account for an individual’s financing, local fuel and electricity rates, charging arrangements, or driving. Kelley Blue Book’s August market report gives the pricing and inventory figures.

For someone deciding what to buy next, the useful comparison is not simply gasoline versus electricity. Include the vehicle price and financing, whether a new or used model fits the budget, local energy costs, where charging would happen, the vehicle’s range and utility, and whether the household can find a model that suits its needs. A fuel-price increase may tip a decision for someone already shopping, but the available evidence does not establish one best powertrain or a universal savings figure. As Cox Automotive’s Stephanie Valdez Streaty said in its Q2 commentary, “The next phase of EV growth will likely be driven not only by advances in the technology itself, but by how effectively automakers translate those advances into products that meet consumer expectations for affordability, utility, performance, and ownership experience.” Cox Automotive’s Q2 commentary discusses the market’s next phase.
