No—CVT transmissions are not automatically bad. A continuously variable transmission can help an engine run efficiently, but the CVT label alone does not tell you whether a particular car will be reliable. The five examples below show that CVTs remain available in current compact cars; they do not prove those models have superior long-term transmission reliability.
What a CVT does—and what that means for reliability
A conventional automatic shifts among a set of fixed gear ratios. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) changes its ratio across a continuous range instead, allowing the engine to operate nearer an efficient point. That design can support efficiency, but it does not guarantee better fuel economy or reliability in every car.
NHTSA’s technical overview describes a key engineering tradeoff in belt-and-pulley CVTs: substantial oil pressure is needed to maintain clamping force, and the associated losses rise as input torque increases. This is general design context, not a failure-rate measure or a prediction for a specific vehicle. NHTSA’s CVT technical material
Driving feel also differs. Some CVTs can let engine speed rise and remain high during acceleration rather than producing the familiar sequence of gear changes. Subaru says its Lineartronic system uses two variable-width pulleys connected by a steel chain; its Impreza and Crosstrek offer modes that simulate gear selection. That is Subaru’s description of its own system, not an independent reliability assessment. Subaru Impreza and Crosstrek comparison

Five current cars with CVTs
These 2026 model and trim examples establish that CVTs are still offered in sedans, hatchbacks and small all-wheel-drive cars. Equipment varies by year and trim, so check the exact vehicle listing. The manufacturer specifications confirm transmission availability—not long-term dependability.

What the examples do—and do not—prove
They challenge the idea that CVTs are an obsolete or universally undesirable choice: major automakers include them in current mainstream models. But a list of available cars cannot establish how often their transmissions fail. The evidence here does not provide comparable CVT-specific long-term failure rates for these five examples, so it cannot identify a reliability winner or support a promised lifespan, mileage threshold, repair cost or failure percentage.
Consumer Reports’ 2025-era brand summary places Lexus, Subaru and Toyota at the top and includes Honda among the top five for overall brand reliability. That is broad brand-level context, not a CVT score, and it does not establish that every transmission from those manufacturers is dependable. Consumer Reports: Who Makes the Most Reliable New Cars?

How to assess a CVT-equipped used car
For a used vehicle, judge the exact model year and transmission version rather than relying on a blanket verdict about CVTs or a brand. Use independent reliability evidence for that model year where available, and weigh it alongside the vehicle’s service history and condition.

- Ask for maintenance records and confirm that servicing followed the schedule for the exact year, make, model and transmission.
- During a test drive, pay attention to warning lights, abnormal noises and drivability concerns. Have a qualified technician inspect any symptoms before buying.
- A generic diagnostic-code reader may retrieve stored codes, but it cannot by itself establish the mechanical health of a CVT.
- Consider how the transmission feels under the driving conditions you expect, including engine noise during acceleration.
CVT fluid and service are vehicle-specific
Do not assume CVT fluid or a service interval is universal. Nissan publishes separate CVT-fluid service materials for vehicles including the 2026 Rogue and 2018 Sentra; the correct schedule, fluid and procedure depend on the specific vehicle. Consult the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s maintenance information for the exact year and model. Nissan maintenance schedules
