Reliability depends on the exact model year and powertrain; for a used SUV, its maintenance history and present condition matter just as much. Compare model-level evidence, budget for repairs over the time you expect to own it, and have the specific vehicle inspected before buying.
What “reliable” means—and what it does not tell you
Reliability evidence answers different questions depending on how it was gathered. A model’s history can help you compare likely problem areas, but it cannot predict the condition of a particular used SUV or tell you exactly what repairs will cost.
Consumer Reports: owner-reported trouble spots
Consumer Reports’ reliability FAQ, updated December 9, 2025, says its member survey asks about problems experienced during the prior 12 months. It compares vehicles with others from the same model year and, where there is enough information, classifies problems in as many as 20 trouble spots. More serious and expensive problems carry greater weight. Participation is voluntary, so these results are owner-reported evidence, not a census of every vehicle or owner.
J.D. Power: problems after three years
The 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study reported 204 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) overall. It surveyed 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles about problems after three years of ownership. A lower score indicates higher vehicle quality within that study. The figure is study-wide—not an SUV-specific rate—and it measures reported problems, not lifetime repair bills or the odds that a particular used SUV will fail.

J.D. Power’s 2025 study reported a 202 PP100 average for 2022 model-year vehicles after three years, based on 34,175 original owners. In that study, models newly launched for 2022 averaged 241 PP100, compared with 196 PP100 for carryover models. Those are results for the vehicles and period studied, not a rule that every redesign is less dependable.
NHTSA: safety complaints and recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) complaint and recall data can help you check for safety-related reports and recall information tied to a year, make, and model. NHTSA uses complaints alongside other information to identify possible safety-defect trends; an individual complaint is not a confirmed defect finding. Raw complaint counts also are not a reliability ranking or a direct estimate of a vehicle’s failure probability.

How to assess long-term maintenance and repair costs
A cheap SUV can still be an expensive purchase if repairs and routine service consume the savings. Decide how long you expect to keep it, then compare maintenance and repair spending over the same period for each candidate. Keep those costs separate from a full ownership-cost calculation: the figures available here do not include every major cost, such as fuel, insurance, financing, taxes, or depreciation.
Consumer Reports’ 2025 cost analysis, updated December 4, 2025, uses members’ reported out-of-pocket maintenance and repair spending during the previous 12 months. It excludes collision repairs and compares cumulative spending across years one through five and years six through ten. Its findings are presented at the brand level, not as a current, model-specific forecast for an SUV. Costs tend to rise as vehicles age, and new-car warranty or free-maintenance coverage can make early ownership years unlike later ones.

Do not treat old model examples as a current budget. A 2021 Consumer Reports article listed member-reported costs for ten-year-old 2011 SUVs: $250 for the Kia Sportage and $300 for the Honda CR-V. Those figures describe the named 2011 vehicles at that age in the article’s survey period; they are historical, not current repair estimates or a fair comparison of present-day SUVs.
Compare candidate SUVs on the same basis
Before deciding between two or more SUVs, line up the evidence for the specific vehicles rather than relying on a brand reputation or one headline score.

- Model year, generation, and powertrain: Identify the exact year and engine or hybrid configuration. A redesign can change a vehicle substantially, and a new model may have less history available for comparison.
- Evidence and measurement period: Keep Consumer Reports’ trouble-spot history, J.D. Power’s three-year PP100 measure, and NHTSA complaints or recalls distinct. They track different things and should not be treated as interchangeable ratings.
- Matching ownership period: Compare routine service and repairs across the same number of years. Check whether warranty or free-maintenance coverage applies to the specific vehicle and period.
- Vehicle-specific records and findings: Review service documentation, mileage, history-report alerts, and an independent inspection. These address the condition of the SUV you may buy, not just how its model performed in a survey.
- Purchase price and the wider budget: Add the purchase price to the costs you can estimate for your circumstances. A repair-cost comparison alone is not total cost of ownership.
What to check before buying a used SUV
Model-level ratings and a vehicle-history report are useful screening tools, but neither certifies an individual SUV. A report may flag a recorded crash, flood, or other history concern; an inspection can uncover mechanical or condition problems that were never recorded.
- Research the exact year and configuration. Look for owner-reported problem patterns and dependability evidence that actually covers that model year. Treat thin history for a new generation as limited evidence, not proof that the vehicle is reliable or unreliable.
- Check NHTSA by year, make, and model. Review available complaints and recall information at NHTSA’s datasets and APIs. A complaint is a report, not a confirmed defect; use recall information to determine whether any applicable recall work needs attention.
- Get and review a vehicle-history report. Consumer Reports’ used-vehicle buying guidance discusses reports such as AutoCheck and Carfax as ways to look for recorded events. Read any alerts in context and do not assume a clean report means the vehicle has no problems.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Have a trusted mechanic inspect the SUV before purchase. Consumer Reports’ used-car buying guidance explains why inspection matters alongside research and history information: the report or seller may not reveal every condition issue.
- Match the inspection and records to the asking price. Use service documentation, mileage, history alerts, and inspection findings to judge whether the individual SUV is worth its price and whether its likely near-term needs fit your budget.
Can you identify the cheapest reliable SUV from these figures?
No. The available cost analysis compares brands, while the cited model-specific SUV cost examples are historical. The evidence does not provide a current, price-bounded ranking of reliable SUVs or a current model-by-model long-term cost table. It would be misleading to name a cheapest reliable SUV or turn a brand average into a forecast for one model.

The best-supported decision is a comparison, not a universal shortlist: establish which model years and powertrains have relevant evidence, estimate maintenance and repair costs over your planned holding period, and make the final call only after checking the condition of the SUV for sale.
