Cadillac reliability is mixed, not a simple yes or no. RepairPal reports middling repair-cost and severity figures for the model years it covers, while J.D. Power’s 2026 dependability study ranks Cadillac second among premium brands. Those results measure different things, so neither can predict whether a specific Cadillac will be trouble-free—or what it will cost to maintain. For a used-car buyer, the exact model year, service history, condition, warranty status and open recalls matter more than a brand-wide score.
What the reliability ratings say—and why they differ
Cadillac’s results vary by source because each source looks at a different population and uses a different measure. The figures are useful context, but they are not directly comparable.
| Source and measure | Reported result | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| RepairPal reliability rating | 3.0 out of 5.0; 26th of 32 brands | Repair cost, frequency and severity for 2010–2019 model-year vehicles across 345 unique models, according to RepairPal’s 2026 page. |
| RepairPal average repair figures | $783 average annual repair cost; 0.4 unscheduled shop visits per year; 17% chance a repair will be severe | RepairPal’s stated covered population. These are averages, not estimates for a particular Cadillac or current model year. |
| J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study | 175 problems per 100 vehicles; second among premium brands | Original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles after three years. The study surveyed 33,268 owners, fielded from December 2024 through November 2025, and covered 184 problem areas in nine categories. |
| Consumer Reports 2026 brand rankings | 18th for new-car reliability; 16th for used-car reliability; 13th for owner satisfaction; 16th for maintenance and repair cost | Consumer Reports’ survey-based brand rankings. Its individual model-year pages describe subscriber survey data and serious reported problems. |
RepairPal’s figures emphasize repair and maintenance cost, frequency and severity across its stated 2010–2019 coverage. J.D. Power’s problems-per-100-vehicles (PP100) score reflects owner-reported problems after three years for 2023 vehicles; a lower PP100 indicates higher vehicle quality. Consumer Reports uses its own survey-based comparisons. A repair-cost rating and a PP100 score do not answer the same question, so Cadillac’s second-place result in one study does not cancel out its lower standing in another.
J.D. Power also named the Cadillac XT6 among its model-level award recipients. That result applies to the study’s defined population; it does not establish that every XT6 year or every individual vehicle will have the same dependability.

What this means for a Cadillac you might buy
A brand score can help you decide what to investigate, but it cannot stand in for the history and condition of the vehicle in front of you. Reliability can differ by model, model year, powertrain, mileage, upkeep and prior use. Start by identifying the exact vehicle—model, year, engine or powertrain, trim and mileage—then look for information about that specific year rather than assuming the brand average applies.
RepairPal notes that repair and maintenance costs can vary with age, mileage, location and shop. Its $783 annual average is not a quote for a particular repair, nor a forecast of what an individual owner will spend. Luxury-car upkeep can expose a buyer to substantial repair costs; compare the purchase price with the vehicle’s condition and likely maintenance needs, rather than treating a broad brand average as a budget guarantee.

How to check a used Cadillac before buying
- Identify the exact vehicle. Record the model year, model, powertrain, trim and mileage. Use those details when comparing model-year reliability information and researching known problem patterns.
- Review maintenance records. Ask for invoices and service documentation, then compare completed work with the schedule in the vehicle’s model-specific Owner’s Manual. Cadillac provides maintenance schedule information and manuals and guides.
- Check warranty coverage for that vehicle. Cadillac states that new-vehicle bumper-to-bumper coverage is four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. That does not establish that a used vehicle still has coverage: confirm its actual status using Cadillac’s warranty and repairs resources.
- Check for open recalls by VIN. A brand-wide recall count cannot tell you whether a specific vehicle has an outstanding recall. Check the VIN through Cadillac or NHTSA resources. Cadillac says recall repairs completed at a GM dealer are covered at no charge; verify the specific recall and repair status for the vehicle.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Ask a qualified mechanic to assess the vehicle’s mechanical condition and review any diagnostic trouble codes. A diagnostic scan can add information, but it is not a complete inspection and cannot guarantee that a future failure will not occur.
- Set a realistic upkeep budget. Use the inspection, service history, vehicle age and mileage to assess likely needs. RepairPal’s averages provide broad context only; local labor rates, parts, shop choice and the vehicle’s condition affect actual costs.
How to compare Cadillac listings fairly
When weighing two cars, compare vehicles from the same model year and class where possible. Look at the reliability source’s method and population, model-year-specific problem history, repair-cost exposure, documented maintenance, mileage and condition, open recalls, remaining warranty, and purchase price against expected upkeep. Do not treat RepairPal’s repair-cost measure and J.D. Power’s PP100 as interchangeable rankings.
