Its current target is to start building the first 40 vehicles by the end of 2026 and begin customer deliveries in early 2027.
What company is bringing Aptera back?
It is Aptera Motors Corp., not a newly formed company. Aptera says it was incorporated in Delaware on March 4, 2019, to develop energy-efficient solar-powered vehicles. The company’s 2025 annual report said it had not delivered a vehicle or recorded revenue from vehicle sales as of that filing, and it acknowledged earlier production delays, including difficulty securing funding. The word “resurrect” therefore describes an ongoing effort to launch the vehicle, not a completed return to customer sales. Aptera’s 2025 annual report documents its earlier status and history.
When could Aptera production and deliveries begin?
In an October 1, 2026 update, Aptera said it planned to begin building its first 40 production vehicles by the end of 2026, with initial customer deliveries targeted for early 2027. These are management targets, not completed milestones. The company said the schedule depends on obtaining financing on acceptable terms, timely supplier performance and regulatory approvals. Its release also identifies risks involving international supply chains, tariffs and trade restrictions, manufacturing scale-up, validation builds, and actual demand, pricing and production costs. Aptera’s October 1 update lays out the targets and conditions.
Milestones already reported
- June 18, 2026: Aptera said it received an EPA Certificate of Conformity for its 2026 Launch Edition. The company called this one of two primary federal certifications required to sell the vehicle in the United States; it did not say all required approvals were complete. The Q2 and first-half 2026 results release reports the certification.
- July 14, 2026: Aptera announced a RepairPal partnership intended to support nationwide service coverage for future owners. This is a plan for service, not evidence that a nationwide Aptera service network is already operating.
- August 4, 2026: Aptera ordered bodies and chassis for its first 40 production vehicles, according to the company’s subsequent Q2 results release.
- August 20, 2026: Aptera announced Launch Design as a partner for design-for-manufacturing and production support.
How much funding does Aptera say it needs?
Aptera’s October 2026 estimates are for capital required at successive production milestones. They are company projections, not guaranteed costs or achieved production capacity.

All three figures come from Aptera’s October 1, 2026 update and depend on financing and execution. The company’s August 12 Q2 release had put the amount needed for initial low-volume production at $40–45 million; the October update superseded that estimate. In the Q2 release, Aptera reported $10.1 million in cash and cash equivalents as of June 30, 2026, so that historical balance should not be read as its current cash position.
What does the Launch Design partnership cover?
Aptera says Launch Design, identified in the announcement as Shanghai Launch Automotive Technology Co., Ltd., will support production fixtures, vehicle testing, pilot production, supply-chain development and high-volume production work. The announced program is valued at up to approximately $44 million. Aptera said two-thirds of approved costs would be paid in cash and the remaining third—up to about $15 million—in warrants to purchase Aptera stock. That warrant figure is not a $15 million cash investment by Launch Design. Details are in Aptera’s Launch Design announcement.

Aptera says final assembly is planned for Carlsbad, California, while larger subassemblies would come through Launch’s supplier network. The company has attributed lower costs and improved production economics to the partnership; those are Aptera’s expectations, not independently validated outcomes.
How many people have reserved an Aptera?
Aptera reported approximately 50,000 reservation holders in its August 12, 2026 Q2 results release. That is a reservation count, not a tally of delivered vehicles or completed sales. The company’s 2025 annual report says it began accepting $100 reservations in December 2020 and described them as fully refundable at that time; those terms are historical and should not be assumed to describe current reservation conditions without newer confirmation.

What still needs to happen?
The gap between a production plan and a customer car includes funding, manufacturing readiness and remaining approvals. Aptera’s own October update makes its schedule contingent on financing on acceptable terms, suppliers performing on time and regulatory approvals. It also identifies the challenge of scaling manufacturing and the uncertainty of actual demand, pricing and production costs. The EPA certificate is a meaningful reported milestone, but Aptera itself described it as only one of two primary federal certifications required for U.S. sales.
Aptera Co-CEO Chris Anthony characterized the revised plan as “a fundamentally leaner path to getting Aptera into customers’ hands,” adding that “what we believe could be a self-sustaining business” was closer. That is management’s assessment, not proof that the business will reach the projected volumes or fund itself from sales.
