Apple’s CarPlay Ultra is expected to expand beyond Aston Martin, but the rollout is not yet a confirmed, model-by-model launch. Apple has publicly identified Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis as future CarPlay Ultra partners. A February 2026 report said at least one major Hyundai or Kia model was expected to receive the system in the second half of 2026, but the exact vehicle, trim, market, and delivery schedule remain unconfirmed.
As of August 18, 2026, Aston Martin remains the only confirmed launch brand in the available evidence. The Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis announcements should be treated as commitments to work toward deployment—not proof that every vehicle from those brands will support CarPlay Ultra.

Which vehicle brands are getting CarPlay Ultra?
Apple publicly identified three future partners when CarPlay Ultra launched:
- Hyundai
- Kia
- Genesis
Apple’s initial launch partner was Aston Martin. CarPlay Ultra became available with supported new Aston Martin orders in the United States and Canada on May 15, 2025. Certain existing Aston Martin vehicles equipped with the automaker’s next-generation infotainment system were also expected to become eligible through a software update.

What the 2026 expansion report actually says
On February 1, 2026, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that CarPlay Ultra was expected to arrive in at least one major new Hyundai or Kia model during the second half of 2026—roughly July 1 through December 31.
The report did not confirm:
- the vehicle involved;
- the trim level;
- the launch country or region;
- whether Ultra would be standard or optional;
- whether support would be available at the start of production or through a later update;
- whether Genesis would launch at the same time.
Hyundai’s IONIQ 3 was mentioned as a possibility, not announced as the first CarPlay Ultra vehicle. Do not treat it as confirmed until Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, or Apple provides model-specific details.

Because the report’s forecast concerned the second half of 2026, it should not be repeated as a guaranteed launch date. The key unresolved question is whether a production vehicle has actually been delivered with Ultra in a buyer’s market and configuration.

What is CarPlay Ultra?
CarPlay Ultra is Apple’s deeper vehicle-integration system. Unlike standard CarPlay, which primarily presents iPhone apps on the vehicle’s center display, Ultra is designed to extend across the car’s broader display environment.
Depending on the vehicle and automaker implementation, it can include:
- the instrument cluster;
- speedometer and tachometer displays;
- fuel or battery information and engine-temperature data;
- tire-pressure and driver-assistance information;
- radio and climate controls;
- vehicle-specific settings;
- widgets;
- customizable themes and automaker branding.
The iPhone provides app-related content, while the vehicle supplies information such as speed, fuel level, tire pressure, and engine temperature. Apple says the experience is tailored to each vehicle, so an Ultra-equipped Kia should not necessarily expose exactly the same controls or layouts as an Aston Martin or Genesis.

CarPlay Ultra versus standard CarPlay
| Standard CarPlay | CarPlay Ultra |
|---|---|
| Primarily runs compatible iPhone apps on the center display | Extends across the center display and instrument cluster |
| Usually leaves gauges and vehicle settings in the automaker’s interface | Can present vehicle information within the CarPlay experience |
| Vehicle controls may remain separate from CarPlay | Can integrate climate, radio, performance, and other functions where supported |
| Widely available across many vehicles | Requires automaker-specific hardware and software integration |
“CarPlay” on a vehicle’s specification sheet is therefore not enough. A car may support standard CarPlay without supporting Ultra.
Can an existing CarPlay car be upgraded?
Do not assume so. The available evidence does not describe CarPlay Ultra as an aftermarket software installation for ordinary CarPlay vehicles. Ultra depends on access to multiple vehicle displays and systems, as well as compatible infotainment hardware and automaker software integration.
The known update path is narrower: certain existing Aston Martin vehicles with the company’s next-generation infotainment system were expected to receive support through a dealer-installed software update. That does not establish that older Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, or other vehicles can be upgraded.
An iPhone update or aftermarket CarPlay adapter cannot, by itself, add instrument-cluster integration, vehicle data access, climate controls, or other Ultra features to an incompatible car.

Aston Martin’s position
Aston Martin was the first confirmed CarPlay Ultra partner. New supported orders in the United States and Canada could use the system from May 15, 2025, while some existing vehicles with the required next-generation infotainment system were expected to receive an update.
This is a genuine launch, but it is not evidence that every Aston Martin model—or every vehicle from a future partner—has the feature. Compatibility remains dependent on the specific vehicle and its infotainment hardware.

They should not be counted among the expected CarPlay Ultra launch brands based on the available reporting.
- BMW, Ford, and Rivian: MacRumors reported that these companies had publicly downplayed or appeared reluctant toward CarPlay Ultra. That is not the same as a universal formal rejection by every model or marque.
- General Motors: GM’s broader strategy of phasing out regular CarPlay in new electric vehicles makes adoption appear unlikely. Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC should be treated as likely excluded by inference—not as brands that have each issued a specific CarPlay Ultra rejection.
- Tesla: Separate reporting about Tesla working toward regular CarPlay does not indicate support for CarPlay Ultra. Standard CarPlay and Ultra require different levels of vehicle integration.

What buyers should verify before ordering
If CarPlay Ultra matters to your purchase, check the vehicle rather than relying on the brand name. Confirm all of the following with the automaker or dealer:
- Exact model and model year: Brand-level commitment does not guarantee lineup-wide support.
- Trim and option package: Ultra may be limited to particular configurations.
- Market: Availability can differ by country or regional specification.
- Delivery status: Ask whether Ultra is active at delivery or planned for a later update.
- Hardware: Confirm that the car has the required next-generation infotainment system.
- Feature scope: Ask whether the system reaches the instrument cluster and controls climate, radio, and vehicle settings.
- Connection method: Verify whether it is wireless or wired.
- Fees: Ask whether any subscription, connected-services plan, or optional-equipment charge is required.
- Physical controls: If you prefer buttons and knobs for climate or other frequently used functions, inspect the actual cabin rather than assuming the interface will suit you.
Useful questions include: “Does this exact VIN or trim support CarPlay Ultra?” “Is Ultra enabled when the vehicle is delivered?” and “Will existing owners receive it by update?”
What iPhone is required?
Launch reporting listed an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later as the requirement. Software requirements can change, so verify Apple’s current compatibility information before buying a phone or vehicle.

Should you wait for CarPlay Ultra?
Wait for model-specific confirmation if Ultra is a deciding factor in your purchase. Hyundai and Kia are the most relevant brands to watch for a broader-market expansion because a 2026 arrival was specifically reported for at least one major model. Genesis has the same public commitment from Apple, but the available evidence provides less specific timing.
Do not buy a vehicle solely because its manufacturer appears on a future-partner list. Confirm that the exact car you want supports Ultra in your market, at your trim level, and on your delivery date. If the dealer cannot provide that confirmation, treat the vehicle as standard-CarPlay-only for purchase planning.
