Apple Says Its F1 Debut Beat ESPN—but the Scoreboard Is Still Private

Apple claims its first U.S. Formula 1 race drew more viewers than ESPN’s comparable 2025 broadcast. The early signal is promising, but the actual scoreboard remains private.

Apple may have won the first year-over-year comparison in its Formula 1 broadcasting deal, but it has not published enough data to call the result an independently verified ratings victory. Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of services, said the 2026 Australian Grand Prix drew more U.S. viewers than the comparable 2025 race carried by ESPN and exceeded Apple’s and F1’s expectations. Apple did not disclose the 2026 audience total or explain how it measured “viewership.”

What Apple actually claimed

ESPN’s U.S. Formula 1 rights ended after the 2025 season. Under a five-year agreement beginning in 2026, Apple became F1’s exclusive U.S. broadcast partner. The first Apple-covered race was the Australian Grand Prix on March 7, 2026.

After that opening weekend, Cue said viewership was higher than for ESPN’s comparable 2025 Australian Grand Prix. That is the basis for headlines describing an Apple “victory” over ESPN.

However, this was not a head-to-head contest. ESPN did not carry the 2026 Australian race in the United States. The comparison is between two editions of the same event, one year apart:

  • Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
  • A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
  • Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
  • 2025 Australian Grand Prix: broadcast by ESPN and viewed by approximately 1.1 million U.S. viewers.
  • 2026 Australian Grand Prix: carried exclusively by Apple in the U.S., with no specific public audience total released.

Apple’s statement supports the narrower conclusion that it claims a year-over-year increase—not that Apple definitively beat ESPN under a common, independently audited measurement.

Apple’s launch announcement and Formula 1’s rights announcement describe the new arrangement. The original audience claim was reported by MacRumors.

The public numbers provide context—but not a final score

ESPN’s published 2025 figures establish a substantial baseline. Across ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC, the network reported an average of 1.3 million viewers per race in 2025. ESPN called that its highest-ever U.S. single-season live-telecast average for Formula 1, and said 16 of 24 races set event viewership records.

That represented significant growth during ESPN’s tenure. ESPN reported that its average race audience rose from 554,000 viewers in 2018 to 1.3 million in 2025. The available evidence therefore does not support a story in which Apple rescued F1 from a failing broadcaster. Apple inherited a U.S. property whose conventional television audience had already expanded considerably.

Those numbers also should not be confused. The 1.1 million figure is an estimate for the 2025 Australian Grand Prix, while 1.3 million is ESPN’s average across the entire 2025 season. Neither tells us how many people watched the 2026 Australian race on Apple.

ESPN’s figures are conventional Nielsen-based television measurements. Apple’s streaming data could use a different definition, such as unique viewers, average-minute audience, total streams, viewing hours, accounts, devices, or live-plus-replay viewing. It may also include viewing across Apple’s own platforms and distribution partners. Without a methodology, those measurements cannot be treated as equivalent.

ESPN’s 2025 results document the network’s reported audience growth. Axios later reported that Apple had still not released audience data for any of its first nine race weekends by July 7, 2026.

Why Australia is an imperfect benchmark

The Australian Grand Prix has historically occupied a late-night U.S. viewing window. That can depress a conventional television audience compared with races scheduled for more convenient American hours. The 2025 event’s approximately 1.1 million viewers may therefore be a relatively low comparison point.

A larger audience in 2026 would be encouraging, but it would not prove that Apple’s streaming platform alone caused the increase. A meaningful comparison would need to account for:

  • the precise U.S. start time and scheduling of each race;
  • promotional activity surrounding Apple’s launch;
  • whether the count covers live viewing, replays, or both;
  • whether “viewers” means people, households, accounts, devices, or streams;
  • viewing on televisions, phones, tablets, browsers, and connected devices; and
  • the difference between Nielsen television measurement and Apple’s proprietary platform data.

Early-launch publicity can also produce a temporary boost. The more revealing test is whether Apple retains viewers through a full season, including races that do not benefit from a new-rights-deal spotlight.

What Apple’s F1 package offers

Apple’s appeal is not limited to putting the main race stream in another app. In the United States, Apple TV subscribers receive every practice session, qualifying session, Sprint, and Grand Prix, with English and Spanish commentary. The package includes Sky Sports broadcasts, replays, highlights, and access to F1 TV Premium at no additional charge for U.S. Apple TV subscribers.

Apple also promotes up to 30 additional live feeds, including Driver Tracker, telemetry, onboard, and podium feeds. Multiview supports up to four feeds at once, while compatible viewing supports 4K Dolby Vision and 5.1 surround sound.

  • HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
  • See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

Those features could increase engagement even if the main-race audience is similar to ESPN’s. A viewer who watches onboard cameras, team radio, timing data, replays, or multiple feeds is generating a different kind of value from a traditional single-screen television viewer.

Apple’s official F1 viewing guide lists requirements including iOS 26.2 or later, tvOS 26.2 or later, and macOS Tahoe 26.2 or later, along with supported third-party devices. The service is also available through the Apple TV app on smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, Android devices, Windows devices, and the web. Apple identifies Roku Premium Subscriptions and Prime Video as additional distribution routes in its launch information.

More devices does not necessarily mean more access

The arrangement broadens device compatibility, but full F1 weekend coverage still requires an Apple TV subscription. Apple’s U.S. service page lists Apple TV at $12.99 per month after a seven-day trial, based on the price displayed on August 18, 2026. Prices and offers can change.

Apple says every practice session and a selected number of race weekends are available without a subscription. That is not the same as making the full season free. A casual fan who previously found races through a conventional television package may face a new subscription decision, even if the Apple TV app works on hardware already in the home.

U.S. fans should also avoid confusing Apple TV, the Apple TV app, Apple TV 4K hardware, Apple’s subscription service, and F1 TV. Apple says F1 TV Premium access is included with a U.S. Apple TV subscription, so a viewer should not assume a separate F1 TV purchase is required for 2026 live coverage. F1 TV remains relevant for archives, documentaries, analysis, team radio, telemetry, and other custom viewing features. The official F1 TV page provides the current product information.

The business test is bigger than one race

Audience size is only one measure of whether Apple’s rights deal is working. Apple can potentially benefit from subscriber acquisition, retention, advertising and sponsorship inventory, engagement with interactive feeds, and cross-promotion across its services. F1 and its teams benefit if the partnership expands the U.S. fan base and increases the value of future rights negotiations.

Axios reported an estimated annual Apple rights fee of $140 million to $160 million, compared with roughly $90 million annually for ESPN. Those are Axios estimates, not officially disclosed contract terms. A higher rights cost makes subscriber conversion, retention, and commercial value especially important.

Apple’s product strengths include control over the viewing interface, high-quality video and audio, multiple feeds, and integration with the wider Apple ecosystem. Apple and F1 can also connect live racing with entertainment programming, including the audience interested in F1: The Movie.

The risks are equally clear: proprietary and nontransparent metrics, a subscription barrier for casual viewers, platform-switching friction, and the possibility that the first race benefited from launch curiosity. A deal can be commercially successful for Apple without producing the largest conventional audience, and it can produce a large audience without proving that the rights fee will pay off.

What evidence would establish a durable Apple victory?

A credible assessment should eventually include more than Apple’s statement about Australia. The most useful evidence would be:

  1. A comparable average audience: a clearly defined 2026 average set against ESPN’s 2025 average.
  2. Independent verification: third-party measurement using a disclosed methodology.
  3. Unique reach: evidence that Apple brought new people to F1 rather than merely shifting existing ESPN viewers.
  4. Retention: race-by-race performance after the launch period.
  5. Demographic growth: information about younger viewers, women, Hispanic viewers, and casual fans.
  6. Subscription results: new sign-ups attributable to F1 and the number retained through the season.
  7. Engagement: use of multiview, onboard cameras, replays, telemetry, and companion content.
  8. Accessibility: whether viewers can reliably find and watch races without already being Apple customers.

Until that information is available, “Apple beat ESPN” remains a shorthand for an Apple-reported comparison, not a settled ratings fact.
