The January 2025 images reported by 9to5Mac appear to show a widget-based next-generation interface, but they are leaked development material—not proof that those exact screens shipped. Apple later introduced its production next-generation system as CarPlay Ultra on May 15, 2025.
What the leaked CarPlay 2.0 images show
9to5Mac reported on January 14, 2025 that Aaron Perris shared four images found in an EU database. The report described a widget interface that keeps a vertical app column on the left side of the display.

Widgets visible in the reported images
- A clock showing the time in a selected city.
- A Forecast weather widget.
- A calendar widget highlighting the next event.
- A combined navigation and Now Playing widget.
- A standalone Now Playing widget.
Those screenshots are best understood as a development glimpse. The report did not establish that Apple published them, that the design was final, or that every pictured widget is present in the shipping system.
Is CarPlay 2.0 the same as CarPlay Ultra?
They refer to related stages of Apple’s next-generation CarPlay project, but the names should not be treated as interchangeable official branding. Apple announced the project in 2022, while “CarPlay 2.0” became a shorthand used in coverage. Apple’s launched name is CarPlay Ultra.

Apple announced CarPlay Ultra on May 15, 2025 as “the next generation of CarPlay.” Therefore, the leaked widget screens and the confirmed CarPlay Ultra feature set are separate evidence: the former shows reported interface work, while the latter describes what Apple says the released platform can do.
What CarPlay Ultra adds beyond ordinary CarPlay
Traditional CarPlay primarily presents iPhone apps and media on a compatible center display. CarPlay Ultra is designed as a deeper automaker integration that can extend across the vehicle’s screens, including the instrument cluster.
Driver displays and vehicle data
Apple says CarPlay Ultra can display speedometer and tachometer information, fuel and temperature gauges, maps, media, driver-assistance information and tire-pressure data. The exact information available depends on what the vehicle exposes through its integration.
Vehicle controls
Apple describes controls for the radio, climate system and vehicle-specific settings. Depending on the vehicle, drivers can use the touchscreen, physical controls or Siri. This is materially different from simply projecting an iPhone interface onto a central screen.
Widgets across the cabin
iPhone-powered widgets can be arranged on the vehicle display or in the gauge cluster. Apple’s architecture documentation explains that some content is rendered in the vehicle and some remotely by the iPhone; the vehicle supplies current state information through its own integration.

Can an iPhone update or wireless adapter add CarPlay Ultra to any car?
No general software-only upgrade can be assumed. Because CarPlay Ultra depends on the vehicle’s displays, controls and available data, compatibility requires automaker-level integration. Apple’s architecture description means an iPhone update or a generic aftermarket wireless adapter cannot by itself provide instrument-cluster access, climate controls or vehicle data in an unsupported car.
This is an architectural limitation, not a claim that Apple has tested every aftermarket product. A receiver or adapter may support standard CarPlay where the vehicle already supports it, but that does not establish CarPlay Ultra compatibility.

CarPlay Ultra iPhone requirements
- iPhone: iPhone 12 or later.
- Software: iOS 18.5 or later.
- Connection: Apple’s developer documentation describes CarPlay Ultra as wireless and available when the driver’s iPhone is present.
- Vehicle: A compatible automaker integration with the necessary displays, controls and data.
The iPhone requirement does not make an otherwise unsupported vehicle compatible; the car-side integration remains essential.
Which cars support CarPlay Ultra?
Apple’s initial May 2025 announcement said CarPlay Ultra was available with new Aston Martin vehicle orders in the United States and Canada. Apple also said certain existing Aston Martin vehicles with the brand’s latest next-generation infotainment system would receive it through a software update. Hyundai, Kia and Genesis were named as brands committed to bringing CarPlay Ultra to drivers.
Those were announcement-era rollout statements, not a complete model, trim and region list. The available sources do not establish which exact vehicles support CarPlay Ultra as of September 28, 2026. Buyers should verify the specific model year, trim, market and infotainment version with Apple and the automaker before treating a vehicle as compatible.

How the project reached CarPlay Ultra
Apple announced its next-generation CarPlay project in 2022. A 9to5Mac report on January 7, 2025 noted that earlier targets—first 2023 and later the end of 2024—had passed without a launch. That report cited references in iOS 18.3 beta 2, including material associated with maps and climate controls, as evidence that development continued. Beta references do not prove the final shipping feature set.

How the leaked widgets relate to standard CarPlay
Apple separately documents widgets and Live Activities for standard CarPlay. Widgets appear to the left of CarPlay Dashboard and can support interaction on touchscreen-equipped vehicles. Live Activities can appear automatically in Dashboard or as a notification.
These standard-CarPlay features should not be confused with CarPlay Ultra’s vehicle-wide integration. A widget in Dashboard does not imply access to the instrument cluster or to climate, radio and vehicle-specific controls.
What drivers should take from the images
- The reported screenshots suggest Apple was exploring a more information-dense, widget-oriented layout.
- The persistent app column indicates that familiar app access remained part of the concept shown in the report.
- The images do not confirm a final public design, a release date or compatibility with a particular car.
- CarPlay Ultra’s defining change is the partnership with the automaker: content and controls can span the car rather than stopping at a projected center display.
Apple’s stated scale and positioning
Apple’s UK newsroom said CarPlay was used more than 600 million times per day in 2025. That is an Apple-reported usage figure, not an independently audited measurement. Apple positioned CarPlay Ultra as a unified experience created together with automakers; Apple executive Bob Borchers said, “With CarPlay Ultra, together with automakers, we are reimagining the in-car experience, making it even more unified and consistent.”

How to check a vehicle before buying or updating
- Identify the exact brand, model year, trim and country in which the vehicle will be operated.
- Confirm that the vehicle has the automaker’s infotainment system identified as compatible with CarPlay Ultra, not merely standard CarPlay.
- Ask whether the feature is factory-installed or delivered by a software update, and whether the update applies to that exact vehicle identification.
- Check which displays and controls are integrated: instrument cluster, gauges, climate, radio, driver-assistance information and tire pressure may vary by vehicle.
- Verify that the driver’s phone is an iPhone 12 or newer running iOS 18.5 or later.
Bottom line on the “CarPlay 2.0” leak
The January 2025 leak shows reported widget concepts—clock, weather, calendar, navigation and media—rather than a confirmed final interface. Apple’s actual next-generation product is CarPlay Ultra, announced in May 2025. It requires both a recent iPhone and a participating vehicle whose automaker integration exposes the required screens, controls and data. No complete current model list can be established from the available announcement information alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Apple officially call the leaked interface “CarPlay 2.0”?
No. “CarPlay 2.0” is a media shorthand. Apple’s official name for its launched next-generation system is CarPlay Ultra.
Do the leaked images prove that every shown widget shipped?
No. They were reported development images, and no evidence here confirms that the exact screenshots represent the final production interface.
Will a wireless CarPlay adapter unlock CarPlay Ultra?
Not on its own. CarPlay Ultra requires automaker integration with the vehicle’s displays, controls and data.
