The Ferrari F40 crash near Markyate, England, happened on January 16, 2025, on a straight section of the A5. Reports say the car left the road to the right and hit a lamp post. They do not establish why it lost control. A video-based theory suggested lift-off oversteer, but that remains analysis—not an official finding.
What happened to the Ferrari F40 near Markyate?
Road & Track reported that the collision occurred at about 12:50 p.m. on January 16, 2025, on the A5 near Markyate in Hertfordshire. The car was travelling along a straight stretch when it lost control, left the road to the right and struck a lamp post. The report said details about the cause were sparse. Road & Track’s account attributed the driver’s reported service-technician role to The Supercar Blog and the report of transport to hospital to local reports; it did not name the driver or establish their medical condition.
Road & Track identified the car by registration as F40 PRX and attributed the claim that it was among the highest-mileage F40s to CarThrottle on X. Those are reported identifications, not independently authenticated vehicle-history findings.
Why did it crash on a straight road?
The cause has not been established in the reporting. The Drive’s January 17 video coverage interpreted the footage as suggesting lift-off oversteer and raised limited experience with a powerful rear-wheel-drive car as a possible contributing factor. That is an outlet’s interpretation of a brief video and reported car history, not a police reconstruction or confirmed finding. The Drive’s coverage does not prove what the driver did immediately before the car left the road.

A straight road does not rule out a loss of control. Speed, tire condition and temperature, grip, throttle changes, vehicle balance, surface conditions and a driver’s response can all affect stability. The available account does not establish the car’s condition or precise driver inputs before impact. Reports describe cold, wet conditions, but that alone does not prove the road surface caused the crash.
What does lift-off oversteer mean?
Lift-off oversteer is a possible handling response in which abruptly easing off the throttle while cornering shifts the car’s balance forward and can reduce rear-tire grip, allowing the rear to swing outward. It is not established as the mechanism in this incident. The brief footage and reporting do not establish whether the driver lifted off, whether the car was cornering or changing direction, or what other factors were present.

What the F40’s character can—and cannot—tell us
A 2012 F40 feature describes turbo lag, sensitive steering and the need for smooth inputs. That background helps explain why the car may demand deliberate control, but it cannot explain this specific loss of control without evidence about the car and its driver at the time. The feature’s description of a 1990 example gives a 2,936 cc twin-turbo V8, five-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive; those figures are secondary-source context, not a verified specification sheet for the crashed car. The DK Engineering-hosted feature also states that production ran from 1987 to 1992 and gives a total of 1,315 cars.
Was this the same F40 crash as Lando Norris’s?
No. The Markyate incident involved the car reported as registration F40 PRX. Lando Norris’s F40 was involved in a separate crash near Monaco. Coverage distinguishes the cars and events; it also describes different conditions, with UK reports referring to wet and cold conditions and CarExpert characterizing the Monaco-area road as dry. CarExpert’s report discusses the distinction and notes that published F40 production totals vary.

Do multiple F40 crashes show a rising crash rate?
No conclusion about crash frequency follows from several widely reported incidents. Coverage has cited different production totals—around 1,300, 1,311 or circa 1,315—and no reliable statistic on F40 crash frequency or crash rates is established in these accounts. A cluster of news stories is not evidence that F40s are crashing more often.
