Depending on the car, it can lock, unlock and start the vehicle, support hands-free passive entry, and allow the owner to share access. The credential is normally stored in Google Wallet, or Samsung Wallet on some supported Samsung devices.

What is an Android digital car key?
An Android digital car key is a cryptographic vehicle-key credential authorized by the car manufacturer and stored on a supported phone wallet. The vehicle decides which functions the credential can perform. Depending on the implementation, those functions may include:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Locking and unlocking the doors
- Starting the vehicle
- Hands-free passive entry

What it is not
Android digital car key is separate from Android Auto. Android Auto connects a phone to the vehicle’s infotainment system for navigation, calls, media and compatible apps. A car can support Android Auto without accepting a phone as a key. Check the two features separately using the manufacturer’s specifications and Google’s Android Auto vehicle list.
It is also different from a manufacturer’s smartphone app. An app may provide remote lock, climate control, vehicle status or remote start through cellular-connected services. A digital key is primarily a local access credential that communicates directly with the vehicle.

- The manufacturer authorizes the vehicle and owner. This may involve the automaker’s app, an email invitation, the vehicle’s infotainment system, physical key fobs or an activation code.
- The phone is paired with the vehicle. The resulting digital credential is added to Google Wallet or, on supported Samsung devices, Samsung Wallet.
- The phone and car authenticate each other. The vehicle checks the authorized credential over NFC, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Ultra-Wideband (UWB), or a combination of these technologies.
- The vehicle grants supported functions. The exact result—unlocking, starting, passive entry or sharing—depends on the car’s hardware and software.
NFC
NFC is a very short-range contactless connection. You generally hold the phone against a reader in the door handle, center console, charging tray or another marked location. It is usually the fallback method when hands-free proximity unlocking is unavailable. BMW, for example, describes an NFC-based Digital Key system in its operating-principle guidance.
Bluetooth Low Energy
BLE allows the phone and car to communicate at short range without touching. It can support wallet controls and help establish proximity-key behavior, but Bluetooth alone does not guarantee hands-free passive entry. Range and behavior are vehicle-specific.
Ultra-Wideband
UWB provides more precise distance and position information than ordinary Bluetooth. When both the car and phone support it, UWB can help the vehicle recognize that an authorized phone is nearby and enable passive entry while the phone remains in a pocket or bag. UWB is not present on every supported Android phone or vehicle.
Google describes these approaches in its digital car key overview and its technical Wallet documentation.

Which Android phones support digital car keys?
Google’s current general guidance includes:
- Google Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold
- Samsung Galaxy S21 and later
- Select other Android phones running Android 12 or later
Google’s detailed compatibility information also lists selected models from manufacturers including Oppo, Xiaomi, Motorola and OnePlus, as well as Pixel Watch 3 in supported-device information. Android 12 alone is not enough: the exact model, radio hardware, software certification and market must qualify. NFC, BLE and—if passive entry is important—UWB support may all matter. Check the current Google compatibility page and the vehicle manufacturer’s list before buying or replacing a phone.
Which cars support it?
Google’s current list includes selected vehicles from brands such as Audi, BMW, BYD, Cupra, Denza, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Lexus, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, MINI, Polestar, Porsche, RAM, Rivian, Škoda, Toyota, Volvo and Yangwang.
This is a brand-level guide, not a promise that every model, trim or model year works. Support can be restricted by country, vehicle hardware, software version or option package. Manufacturer names include BMW Digital Key or Digital Key Plus, Hyundai Digital Key, Genesis Digital Key 2, Kia Digital Key and Mercedes-Benz Digital Vehicle Key. Verify the exact vehicle with the manufacturer before relying on the feature.
What you need before setup
- A supported Android phone and required Android version
- A vehicle with digital-key hardware and support in your market
- Google Wallet, or Samsung Wallet where applicable
- The manufacturer’s app and account if required
- An internet connection during initial setup
- Current phone, Wallet, manufacturer-app and vehicle software
- Bluetooth enabled, and NFC or UWB enabled when required
- Physical keys, an activation code or a manufacturer email, depending on the car
Internet is required to set up the key. Normal nearby operation is generally handled locally through NFC, BLE or UWB; separate remote commands from a manufacturer app may still require cellular connectivity and an eligible service.
How to set up an Android digital car key
Route 1: Use the manufacturer’s app
- Open the vehicle manufacturer’s app and sign in.
- Pair the vehicle with your account.
- Open Digital Key, Digital Key 2, Phone as a Key or the equivalent menu.
- Follow the pairing instructions and sign in with the requested Google Account.
- Accept the terms and choose Start pairing, or the equivalent command.
- Complete any physical-key, charging-pad, NFC-reader or in-car activation step.
- Confirm that the key appears in Google Wallet.
Route 2: Use a manufacturer email
- Open the digital-key email on the Android phone.
- Tap Add to Wallet on Android.
- Sign in with the requested Google Account and accept the terms.
- Complete the vehicle-side activation instructions.
If the email does not include the Add to Wallet on Android link, Google advises contacting the vehicle manufacturer. Samsung users may be directed to set up the key in Samsung Wallet.
The car’s manual takes priority over this generic sequence. Some vehicles require both physical key fobs, the car in Park, the engine or accessory mode on, the manufacturer app open, a particular account region, or the phone placed on a charging pad. Do not delete an existing key during troubleshooting unless you have the credentials or physical keys needed to reactivate it.
How to use the key
Locking and unlocking
With NFC, hold the phone near the specified door-handle reader. With supported BLE and UWB systems, approach the car with the phone nearby for passive entry or use the wallet controls within Bluetooth range. Google says passive entry is enabled by default during setup when supported, but it is not available on every vehicle or device.

- Durable Zinc Alloy & Weather-Resistant: ANSI Grade 3 certified and constructed from solid zinc alloy with a reinforced lock cylinder for long-lasting security. IP54 weather-resistant design withstands rain and cold, ensuring reliable operation
Starting the car
Starting behavior varies. The vehicle may detect the phone automatically, require the phone inside the cabin, or require it to be placed on a charging pad or NFC reader. Some setups allow starting while the phone screen is locked. Google says the screen does not need to be unlocked by default, but the car or the user’s security settings may require device authentication.
What happens without internet?
A live internet connection should not be assumed for each nearby lock, unlock or start action. Once provisioned, the credential can typically operate locally. Google says car commands require the phone to be within Bluetooth range. Remote commands through a manufacturer app are a separate function and may require cellular service, an account and a connected-services plan.
What happens when the phone battery dies?
Google says some supported phone-and-vehicle combinations can continue to unlock and start the car for a limited period—potentially a few hours—after the phone battery runs out. This reserve-power behavior is not a blanket guarantee. Check the phone and vehicle documentation, and learn whether the emergency procedure requires an NFC reader. Keep a physical key or supported NFC card available.
Sharing a digital car key
On compatible vehicles, Google Wallet can share a key with compatible Android or iOS devices. A typical process is:
- Open Google Wallet and select the digital car key.
- Open the key settings and choose Share car key.
- Send the invitation through an available messaging app.
- Set permissions or an expiration date if the vehicle supports those controls.
The recipient may need a physical key, activation code or in-car activation step. Guest access, expiration, resharing controls and cross-platform support vary by vehicle. Remove access when it is no longer needed. See Google’s digital car key sharing instructions.

Is an Android digital car key secure?
It offers different controls and failure modes from a physical fob. A lost phone can potentially be locked or erased, a digital key can be suspended or deleted, and a shared key can often be revoked without retrieving a physical object. Google says Find My Device can be used to erase a phone and paired key, or the key can be suspended or deleted where supported.
That does not establish that digital keys are categorically safer than physical keys. Protect the Google or manufacturer account, use the phone’s screen lock, share only with trusted people, and test the emergency procedure before depending on the phone. Google, the phone manufacturer and the car manufacturer may process information needed to verify compatibility, provision the key and provide support. The exact data handling depends on the implementation; Google’s data-sharing and safety overview explains the general arrangement.

Troubleshooting
The car does not appear or the phone is unsupported
Confirm the exact phone model, Android version, market, vehicle model year, trim and software. A compatible car does not make every Android phone compatible, and Android 12 is only a platform baseline.
Pairing fails
- Update Android, Google Wallet, the manufacturer app and vehicle software.
- Enable Bluetooth and NFC; enable UWB if the setup requires it.
- Check that the vehicle is in its required setup state.
- Confirm the correct manufacturer account and region.
- Have the required physical keys or activation code ready.
- Ask the manufacturer whether an old pairing must be reset.
Passive entry does not work
- Confirm that both phone and vehicle support passive entry.
- Check Bluetooth, UWB, software and battery settings.
- Remove a metal case, wallet or other obstruction.
- Try the phone near the door-handle NFC reader.
- Try the interior NFC reader or charging pad to start the car.
- Consult the vehicle manual before removing and re-pairing the key.
Phone position can matter. Hyundai warns that a phone in a back pocket or bag may cause poor connection or delayed operation; keep it in a position recommended by the vehicle manual.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The phone was lost or stolen
- Use Find My Device to lock or erase the phone.
- Suspend or delete the digital key if that option is available.
- Revoke shared keys.
- Contact the vehicle manufacturer if remote deactivation is unavailable.
- Use the physical key or backup NFC card.
The phone was replaced
Do not assume the key transfers automatically with the same Google Account. A replacement phone will generally require reactivation or new pairing through the manufacturer. If the key was unpaired or deleted, Google says a new manufacturer email and link may be required.
The vehicle battery is dead
A phone key cannot solve every vehicle-power problem. You may need a physical key blade, an emergency NFC procedure, a backup card, a 12-volt jump or roadside assistance.
Alternatives and backups
- Physical key fob: the broadest fallback across conditions, but it can be lost or damaged and is harder to manage remotely.
- Manufacturer app: useful for remote lock, climate, status or start where supported, but usually depends on cellular connectivity and account services.
- NFC key card: a wallet-sized backup on some BMW and Hyundai vehicles, though it may not provide every key function.
- Smartwatch: supported on some phone-and-vehicle combinations, but watch compatibility is narrower than phone compatibility. Google’s current information includes Pixel Watch 3 among supported devices.
Should you rely on it?
An Android digital car key is a strong convenience feature when the exact phone and vehicle are fully compatible, especially if UWB passive entry works. It is not a universal Android capability, and the real experience is determined by the manufacturer’s model, trim, market and software support.
Before making it your everyday key, test locking, unlocking, starting, NFC fallback, locked-screen behavior and the dead-battery procedure. Keep a physical key or supported NFC backup until you know how your particular car behaves.
