Google’s Car ready mobile apps program is already available on selected vehicles with Google built-in, but Android Auto support is still listed as forthcoming. The available Google documentation does not confirm that Android Auto 13.8 Beta introduced the program—or even independently confirm version 13.8 as a specific official release. These are related developments, not one verified update.
What Android Auto 13.8 Beta actually confirms
Reports about an Android Auto 13.8 Beta should be treated separately from Google’s Car ready mobile apps initiative. The official Android Auto beta guidance explains how to join the testing program, but it does not identify version 13.8, publish release notes for that version, or connect it to the car-ready app rollout.
There is therefore no authoritative basis in the available Google sources for saying that “Android Auto 13.8 Beta adds Car ready mobile apps.” A version number observed in a staged Play Store rollout, an APK listing, or a tester report is not enough to establish that it activates a particular consumer feature.
The safest description is that Android Auto 13.8 may have been reported or observed, while the specific relationship between that build and Car ready mobile apps remains unconfirmed. Google has not publicly supplied a confirmed version number or release date for Android Auto support for the program.

Google’s Car ready mobile apps program is already live—on a different platform
Google describes Car ready mobile apps as a distribution program for eligible mobile applications that can run on compatible vehicle displays with little or no additional automotive development. The initial categories include video, games, and browsers, subject to Google’s quality, compatibility, and safety requirements.
The current Google developer documentation says availability began in February 2025 for compatible vehicles running Android Automotive OS with Google built-in. Google also announced the initial rollout in February 2025, naming select Volvo and Polestar vehicles as early recipients and saying more makes and models were expected later.
This is not unrestricted phone mirroring. An app must be eligible, meet the relevant Car ready quality guidelines, be distributed through Google’s systems, and be supported by the vehicle’s certified hardware and software.
Car-ready apps are designed for parked or passenger use
Car ready mobile apps are not intended to provide video, games, or general web browsing while the vehicle is moving. Google says apps distributed through the program are hidden and stopped when driving begins.

That restriction makes the program useful for situations such as:
- Waiting in a parked vehicle
- Charging an electric car
- Allowing passengers to use a larger built-in display
- Using entertainment or browsing apps before a journey or after arriving
It does not turn the vehicle screen into a general-purpose Android tablet for the driver. Driving-safe interaction remains governed by the applicable app category and platform restrictions.

Android Auto and Android Automotive OS are not the same
The distinction explains why an Android Auto beta does not automatically provide the same features as a car with Google built-in.

Google’s Android for Cars overview describes Android Auto as a phone-based, projected experience. Android Automotive OS, by contrast, is an operating system embedded in the vehicle. “Google built-in” generally refers to Android Automotive OS vehicles that also provide Google Automotive Services such as the Play Store and, depending on market and vehicle, Google Maps and Google Assistant or newer Google assistant services.

A vehicle can support Android Auto without running Android Automotive OS. It can also run Android Automotive OS without offering every Android Auto capability. Some vehicles support both, while others support neither. Consequently, an Android Auto-compatible head unit alone does not qualify a car for the currently documented Car ready mobile apps rollout.
What users can do now
1. Join the official Android Auto beta if you want to test Android Auto software
Google’s official enrollment process is:
- Open the Android Auto beta opt-in page.
- Select Become a tester.
- Open Google Play and update Android Auto when a beta build is offered.
Beta availability can vary by Google Account and region. If no beta build is available, the phone continues receiving the regular version until another beta becomes available. Only one Android Auto version can be installed on a phone at a time, and Google warns that beta builds may be less stable.
Joining the beta does not guarantee access to every experimental feature. Features may be controlled through staged rollouts, account settings, server-side flags, vehicle compatibility, or regional availability.
2. Check whether the vehicle has Google built-in
Look at the vehicle’s infotainment system rather than the phone’s Android Auto settings. A qualifying vehicle generally has an embedded Google Play Store and identifies itself as a car with Google built-in. A car that merely launches Android Auto after a USB or wireless-phone connection is not automatically eligible.

3. Check the vehicle’s own Play Store
On a supported Google-built-in vehicle, eligible apps may appear through the vehicle’s Play Store. The catalog can depend on the vehicle, software version, country, account, app eligibility, and rollout stage. A compatible app will not necessarily appear immediately on every vehicle.
For comparison, Google’s Android Auto app guidance lists existing compatible categories such as music and other media, messaging, and news-related services. Those driving-oriented apps should not be confused with the newer Car ready mobile apps program.
Why a beta user may see no new apps
If enrolling in Android Auto Beta produces no visible change, that does not prove the beta failed. Possible explanations include:
- The feature is server-side or being staged gradually.
- The vehicle supports Android Auto but does not have Android Automotive OS with Google built-in.
- Car ready mobile apps are not yet supported on Android Auto.
- The app is unavailable in the user’s market or is not eligible.
- The vehicle is moving, so parked-only apps are hidden.
- Google Account or Play Store personalization affects visibility.
- The phone, vehicle, or head unit does not meet the relevant compatibility requirements.
A beta enrollment is early access to a software channel, not a guarantee that every experiment will appear. Unofficial APK downloads should not be the default workaround: they can introduce compatibility and rollback problems and cannot establish that Google officially supports the feature.
What Google has said over time
Google introduced the concept publicly in a May 2024 Android Developers Blog post. That announcement presented the Tier 3 “car ready” experience as a way to bring more adaptive, large-screen-compatible mobile apps to cars with Google built-in and discussed a future path that included Android Auto.
Google’s newer developer documentation is more specific about the current rollout: Android Automotive OS with Google built-in is supported now, while Android Auto support will come at a later date. No public date is supplied.

That is an important change in emphasis. The program should not be described as merely an unreleased concept, because it is operating on selected embedded automotive systems. But older wording should not be used to claim that Android Auto already supports the same apps.

For developers, the program can reduce the need to build a separate full automotive application, but “little or no additional development” does not mean automatic approval. Apps must still satisfy Google Play requirements, compatibility expectations, category-specific quality rules, and parked-use restrictions.

Potential blockers include Play feature requirements that exclude automotive distribution, dependencies on Google Play services APIs unavailable in cars, poor large-screen behavior, and incompatibility with the program’s compatibility mode.
Google’s documentation also notes that some requirements may be met through the compatibility mode used to run these apps in cars. Developers should test the app’s actual behavior rather than assume that a phone interface will translate perfectly to an automotive display.
Testing
Google recommends testing with Android Automotive OS generic system images using the compatibility mode required for Car ready mobile apps. Google says these images provide a more accurate representation than other system images.
Invitations and opting out
Participation is invite-only. Developers can nominate an app through Google’s interest form. If Google selects it, the developer receives a Play Console Inbox message and an email. Google may automatically opt the app in after the notification period unless the developer opts out.

A developer can opt out during that notification period or later through Play Console. If an app is opted out after installation, it remains installed on devices where it was already installed, but it will not receive updates on those devices and will no longer be discoverable for new installations.
What remains unknown
Google’s current public material does not establish:
- The Android Auto release number that will support Car ready mobile apps
- A launch date for Android Auto distribution
- A complete list of supported vehicles and markets
- Whether all apps available through Android Automotive OS will also be offered through Android Auto
- The final range of app categories for the Android Auto rollout
Those gaps matter because a beta version number alone cannot answer questions about vehicle certification, app eligibility, regional distribution, or parked-use behavior.
Bottom line
Google’s Car ready mobile apps program is real and already available on selected Android Automotive OS vehicles with Google built-in. It expands access to eligible video, game, browser, and other mobile experiences, but those apps are blocked when the vehicle is driven.
Android Auto 13.8 Beta should not be presented as the confirmed release that enabled the program. Google’s current documentation still says Android Auto support is coming later and gives no date. For now, Android Auto users can join the official beta, but should not expect beta enrollment—or an Android Auto-compatible car by itself—to unlock the car-ready mobile app catalog.
