Android Auto 12.7 was a genuine stable release on August 24, 2024, but it did not universally give every compatible car an in-dash radio-favorites screen. The update contained labels and resources for AM, FM, DAB, FM HD, and favorite stations—evidence that Google was preparing deeper control of a vehicle’s built-in radio. Whether that control appears depends on the car or stereo, its firmware, the region, and whether the manufacturer exposes its radio service to Android Auto.
What Android Auto 12.7 actually changed
Android Auto runs on an Android phone and projects a driver-optimized interface to a compatible factory display or aftermarket stereo. Version 12.7 reached the stable channel on August 24, 2024. It was a phone-side Android Auto package update, not a universal firmware update for every vehicle.

Contemporary coverage reported stability and under-the-hood improvements, notification-badge redesigns, and other development work. Reports also identified radio-related resources in the application package:

Those strings suggest a planned interface for browsing and controlling OEM radio sources. They do not prove that the interface was enabled for every Android Auto user. APK strings are evidence of software development, not a product announcement confirming universal availability.

Other reported items, including Android 15 support, “System Health Metrics” strings, notification changes, and related Maps work, should likewise be separated into observed stable-release behavior and code or development discoveries. A resource label does not automatically mean a finished consumer feature.
What “Favorite Radio” is supposed to do
The reported labels point to a radio browser with categories such as:
- AM and FM broadcast radio.
- DAB in markets and vehicles equipped for it.
- FM HD where the vehicle and region support HD Radio.
- A dedicated Favorites list.
- Actions to add or remove the currently tuned station.
This is different from opening TuneIn, iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, or another streaming application. The proposed integration is closer to controlling the car’s built-in tuner through Android Auto than launching an internet-radio app.

However, the OEM radio application remains responsible for actually tuning the station and exposing station information. Android Auto acts as a client and control layer. A phone update cannot create that service in a head unit that does not provide it.
Android Auto radio versus streaming-radio apps
| Capability | Built-in OEM radio integration | Streaming-radio app |
|---|---|---|
| AM/FM tuner | Uses the vehicle’s radio hardware | Usually provides an internet stream |
| Cellular data | Usually not required for broadcast reception | Usually required |
| Controlled by | The OEM radio service and head unit | An Android Auto-compatible app |
| Favorites | Potentially an OEM-exposed Android Auto list | Usually stored by the app or account |
| Universal availability | No; vehicle implementation is required | No; the app must support Android Auto |
A numbered preset saved in the vehicle’s native radio screen may not appear in an Android Auto Favorites list. The AOSP model describes favorites as media items exposed by the radio service, rather than automatically mirroring traditional preset buttons. Availability can also change when a saved station is outside its broadcast range.
Why OEM support is the deciding factor
“OEM support” can mean several different things: general Android Auto compatibility, a manufacturer being added to a compatibility list, a specific head unit receiving an over-the-air update, or an actual radio-control service being exposed to Android Auto. These are not interchangeable.

A car can support Android Auto for navigation, messaging, and streaming media while keeping AM/FM control entirely inside its native infotainment system. It may also require a particular model year, trim, market, or firmware version. Regional radio standards differ too: DAB, HD Radio, station metadata, and frequency spacing are not universal.

Contemporary reporting associated the broader 12.7 discussion with Lucid Motors, Ram Trucks, Nevo, Hongqi, and GAC. That should be read as reporting about platform preparation, testing, or future OEM enablement—not as proof that every vehicle from those brands received working radio favorites. Lucid support, for example, was described as dependent on an OEM over-the-air update.
Which cars and stereos are eligible?
Start with Google’s current Android Auto vehicle compatibility list. It includes makes such as Ram, Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo, Subaru, Nissan, and others. The listed examples include Ram models from 2018 and newer, Toyota models from 2018 and newer, Volkswagen models from 2016 and newer, and Volvo models from 2017 and newer.
These are starting points, not guarantees of radio-favorites support. Check all of the following:
- Exact vehicle model and model year.
- Trim level and factory head-unit model.
- Country or region.
- Whether the car has an AM/FM, DAB, or HD tuner.
- Current infotainment firmware and available manufacturer updates.
- Whether Android Auto is connected by USB or wirelessly.
- Whether an aftermarket stereo is on Google’s supported list.
Google currently lists Android 9 or later for most wired connections and Android 11 or later for wireless Android Auto and select newer vehicles. Wired use also requires a high-quality USB cable. Compatible aftermarket stereos from brands such as JVC, Kenwood, and Pioneer may support Android Auto, but Android Auto compatibility alone does not guarantee OEM radio-control integration. See Google’s Android Auto requirements before replacing hardware.

How to check whether radio favorites work in your car
- Check the Android Auto version in Google Play or in your phone’s app information screen.
- Verify the exact car or stereo—not merely the manufacturer—on Google’s compatibility page.
- Install available infotainment firmware updates using the vehicle manufacturer’s approved process.
- Connect Android Auto by USB or through a supported wireless connection.
- Open the Android Auto media or launcher interface and look for a radio, AM, FM, DAB, or Favorites entry.
- Test the vehicle’s native radio separately to confirm that its tuner works.
- Check the owner’s manual for the difference between native presets and Android Auto favorites.
Menu names may vary, so the final checks are a practical diagnostic method rather than a guaranteed Google menu path. If no radio entry appears, that does not necessarily mean Android Auto 12.7 failed to install. The head unit may simply not expose the required OEM radio service.
What to do if Favorites is missing
- Update Android Auto through the official Google Play channel.
- Disconnect and reconnect the phone, then restart the vehicle’s head unit.
- Check for an official vehicle infotainment or OTA firmware update.
- Confirm that the native tuner works and that the desired station is within reception range.
- Determine whether you are looking for a broadcast station or a streaming service.
- Contact the vehicle manufacturer or stereo maker if the hardware should support the feature.
Do not assume that sideloading a newer APK will unlock radio control. An APK may expose code already present in the package, but it cannot add missing vehicle hardware or an OEM radio service. Unofficial packages can also create compatibility and stability problems.
Should you buy a new stereo or wireless adapter?
A wireless Android Auto adapter can make a wired-compatible system more convenient, but it will not normally add native AM/FM controls that the vehicle does not expose. It is also unsuitable for a car that lacks wired Android Auto in the first place.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAn aftermarket head unit may be worthwhile when the factory stereo lacks Android Auto or has obsolete hardware. Google identifies JVC, Kenwood, and Pioneer among supported aftermarket brands, subject to individual-model compatibility. Replacing a factory system can affect steering-wheel controls, cameras, USB ports, microphones, vehicle settings, and warranty coverage. Verify those integrations before buying from JVC, Kenwood, or Pioneer.

Adapters from vendors such as Motorola MA1 and AAWireless are convenience products, not solutions for unsupported OEM radio integration. Android Auto itself does not require a subscription, although streaming-radio services may require accounts, advertising, cellular data, or paid plans.
The bottom line on Android Auto 12.7
Android Auto 12.7 was significant because its radio labels showed Google moving toward deeper integration with vehicle tuners and station favorites. But the accurate claim is not that the update universally “added radio favorites.” It prepared or exposed evidence of that capability, while the carmaker, head-unit firmware, radio service, region, and rollout determined whether a driver could actually use it.
For most owners, the sensible approach is to update through Google Play, verify the exact vehicle and firmware, and test the Android Auto interface. Keep using the car’s native radio controls or a compatible streaming app if no OEM radio entry appears.
