It was primarily a maintenance update, with no clearly documented major feature or interface redesign.
Date note: Android Auto 12.3 is a historical release, not the newest Android Auto version in 2026. This guide explains what the 2024 update contained and how it could be installed safely.
The short answer
Android Auto 12.3 moved from beta to the stable production channel and became available to users outside the beta program. The build most commonly identified in contemporaneous coverage was 12.3.6426. Google distributed it through the Google Play version of Android Auto, while APK archives such as APKMirror offered a manual-installation alternative.
The update should be understood as a reliability and compatibility release rather than a feature-focused upgrade. No detailed official changelog was available in the coverage surrounding the release, and hands-on reports found no obvious new interface, settings overhaul, or headline function in the phone app or car display.

Google Play remains the preferred installation method. Sideloading the APK makes sense only if the rollout has not reached your phone or you have a specific reason to install that exact historical build.
What Android Auto 12.3 changed

One report associated the release with improvements involving Samsung phones, Android 15 beta compatibility, and Google Maps behavior. Those claims should be treated as observations or secondary reporting rather than promises from Google. Installing 12.3 does not guarantee that a particular connection, navigation, or notification problem will disappear.
Contemporaneous assessments from Xataka Android and Xataka Móvil found no obvious new functionality. That is normal for a maintenance release: changes may improve reliability without producing a visible button or redesigned screen.

How Android Auto 12.3 was released
The stable rollout appeared around June 29 to July 1, 2024, while some publication dates fell on July 2. Availability was phased, so two users could see different versions at the same time depending on account, device, geography, and rollout timing.

The update affects the Android Auto software on your phone. It does not generally update the vehicle manufacturer’s infotainment firmware. USB hardware, Bluetooth pairing, wireless-Android-Auto support, the vehicle’s compatibility, and head-unit firmware remain separate factors.
Update through Google Play
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Choose Manage apps & device.
- Open the available updates list, or tap Update all.
- Find Android Auto and install the update if it is offered.
- Reconnect the phone to the vehicle after installation.
Play Store labels can vary slightly by Android version and Play Store revision. If Android Auto does not appear immediately, check again later. A staged rollout does not necessarily indicate a fault with your phone.

Automatic updates may also install while the phone is charging and connected to the internet. Waiting for Google Play is safer than sideloading when you have no urgent reason to obtain the build.
How to install the Android Auto 12.3 APK
APK installation is an optional fallback, not a requirement for using the stable release. Contemporaneous coverage reported the build through APKMirror, a third-party archive rather than an official Google download page.

- Download the Android Auto 12.3 APK from a reputable archive.
- Confirm that it is the genuine Android Auto package and that the listed version is 12.3.6426.
- Check the device architecture and select the compatible APK variant. Modern phones commonly use ARM64, but do not select it blindly; verify your device’s requirements.
- Open the downloaded file.
- If Android prompts you, allow the browser or file manager to install unknown apps.
- Return to the installer and choose Update or Install.
- Restart the phone or reconnect it to the car if Android Auto does not appear immediately.
- Disable the “install unknown apps” permission afterward if you enabled it only for this installation.
Do not use modified APKs, “premium” versions, random download sites, or a package that does not match the existing Google Android Auto installation. An APK archive is not the same as Google Play, and checking the file, variant, and package is your responsibility.

Should you install Android Auto 12.3?
- Google Play offers the update: Installing it is reasonable for general users because it is the stable production build.
- Google Play has not offered it: Waiting is preferable unless you have a specific reason to obtain 12.3 immediately.
- You are on the beta: The stable release was the production successor to the beta. You may receive it through Google Play, but there may be little visible benefit if the beta is already working properly.
- You expect new features: Do not install it expecting a major redesign or guaranteed new capability.
- You have a serious connection problem: Updating may help, but inspect the cable, Bluetooth pairing, vehicle compatibility, head unit, and related Google apps as well.
A stable label means the build was intended for general users; it does not mean every known issue was resolved. Avoid repeatedly installing older APKs over newer versions unless you are deliberately troubleshooting. Downgrading can create signature, data, and compatibility problems.
What to do if the APK will not install

If Android Auto still fails after updating
Android Auto problems often originate outside the Android Auto APK. Use this least-destructive sequence:
- Restart the phone.
- Restart the vehicle’s infotainment system.
- For wired Android Auto, disconnect and reconnect the USB cable and try another compatible cable or port.
- For wireless Android Auto, remove and recreate the phone’s Bluetooth pairing with the vehicle.
- Update Android Auto, Google Maps, Google, Google Assistant, and the relevant messaging or media apps.
- Clear Android Auto’s cache from the phone’s app settings.
- If necessary, clear Android Auto’s app data and set up the vehicle again.
- Only afterward consider uninstalling updates or reverting to an earlier version.
Clearing app data removes saved Android Auto connections and preferences. If the phone connects but the car does not launch Android Auto, investigate the cable, USB mode, Bluetooth pairing, vehicle compatibility, and head-unit firmware before assuming that the APK is responsible.

Likewise, messaging and navigation faults may belong to Google Maps, Google Assistant, the Google app, notification permissions, the messaging application, or a server-side feature flag. Some Android Auto features are enabled remotely and may not appear solely because the APK version changed.
