Yes—electric tractors are commercially available now, mainly in compact classes. Larger utility tractors are moving from development into customer trials. Solectrac lists its 25-horsepower e25G Gear for reservation, while John Deere says early customers will use its 130-continuous-horsepower E-Power tractor in 2026. Whether one fits your operation depends on implement load, daily hours, charging access and dealer support.

Solectrac e25G Gear: a compact tractor available for reservation
Solectrac’s 2024 listing places the e25G Gear at $29,249 and describes it as a 25-horsepower (19 kW), four-wheel-drive tractor for small farms, livestock operations and equestrian properties. The listed equipment includes a 540-rpm power takeoff (PTO), a 992-pound (450 kg) hitch capacity and a six-year/3,000-hour limited warranty.

John Deere says its battery-electric E-Power tractor is in development. The company expects early production units to work with actual customers starting in 2026, with commercial production anticipated soon afterward. John Deere lists 130 continuous horsepower and targets spraying, mowing, loader work and work around animals.

John Deere says prototypes were tested through 2025 and could use as many as five KREISEL batteries. That development status is different from a broadly stocked dealer model, so ask about ordering, delivery, service coverage and final specifications in your region.

How long can an electric tractor run?
There is no single runtime number that applies to every electric tractor. Battery use changes sharply with PTO implements, hydraulic demand, slopes, soil conditions, speed, temperature and how continuously the tractor is pulling.
Solectrac’s “full-day operation” is a manufacturer claim, not a universal guarantee. Request an estimated usable runtime for your specific implement combination and duty cycle. A tractor that mows intermittently may cover a workday that a continuously loaded tillage or hauling job cannot.

- List the implements you actually use and their PTO, hydraulic and drawbar demands.
- Ask whether the quoted runtime includes breaks, transport and operator changes.
- Determine the battery state-of-charge reserve recommended by the manufacturer.
- Plan where a mid-shift recharge or a second machine would fit if the job runs long.
Can you charge one with a normal EV charger?
John Deere says the E-Power tractor uses a common charging port compatible with standard Level II EV chargers. The company is also exploring mobile and Level III fast-charging solutions. “Compatible with Level II” does not mean every wall connector will work at every farm: confirm the tractor’s connector, voltage, amperage and charging controls with the dealer.
Before purchase, have an electrician verify service capacity, panel space, cable routing, grounding, weather protection and any utility upgrade. Price the installation separately from the tractor. A farm with limited electrical service may need load management, a new transformer or a mobile charging plan.
What changes during daily work?
Noise and local emissions
Solectrac promotes zero-emission, quiet operation and a motor with one moving part. Those are manufacturer descriptions, but they can matter in orchards, vineyards, equestrian facilities, municipalities and other noise-sensitive settings. Battery equipment has no operating exhaust at the worksite.

Maintenance
John Deere says battery equipment can eliminate oil changes and fuel-system maintenance tasks. That does not eliminate all service: tires, brakes, hydraulics, PTO components, cooling systems, high-voltage hardware and software still require inspection and qualified support.
Operating cost
Lower fuel and maintenance spending is not automatic. Electricity tariffs, demand charges, charging losses, battery replacement terms, annual hours and local service costs determine the result. The available manufacturer material does not establish an independent, apples-to-apples lifecycle cost or greenhouse-gas comparison.

John Deere cautions that an electric tractor will not suit every farmer. High-hour operations, remote fields, long uninterrupted shifts and heavy drawbar work may still favor diesel while battery capacity, charging speed and service networks develop.

How to choose an electric tractor
Compare the machine against your actual work rather than its peak horsepower. Use this checklist with a dealer:
- Match continuous capability. Check continuous horsepower, PTO output, hydraulic flow and hitch capacity against every implement you intend to run.
- Verify usable runtime. Get an estimate for your heaviest normal job, not an unloaded demonstration.
- Cost the charging project. Confirm connector, voltage, amperage, charging time, installation and any utility or transformer work.
- Read battery coverage. Ask about the battery warranty, capacity-retention limits, replacement price, transferability and end-of-life handling.
- Check support distance. Identify the selling dealer, trained high-voltage technicians, parts availability and expected response time during harvest or calving.
- Include incentives carefully. Verify eligibility, jurisdiction, application deadlines and whether an incentive applies to the exact model and battery configuration.
- Plan resale. Ask how battery age, software support and remaining warranty affect trade-in value; electric-tractor resale data is still limited.
What does the wider market look like?
California’s 2025 zero-emission equipment list names electric or battery models from Solectrac, Monarch, Fendt, Farmtrac, Rigitrac and CASE IH. Inclusion signals that more manufacturers are pursuing the category, but it does not guarantee retail availability, certification or dealer support in every state or country.
John Deere’s charging strategy reflects the infrastructure challenge. Battery-electric systems ecosystem lead Randall Jerome said, “Our goal is to not just provide an electric tractor but offer charging solutions that fit customers’ unique needs in order to make owning and charging an electric tractor as easy as possible.”
