Among the Most Powerful Versions of Ford’s Modular V8

The 2013 Shelby GT500’s supercharged 5.8L is Ford’s documented 662-hp high point in its historical Shelby progression. Here are other notable production and crate-engine figures, with their limits clearly distinguished.

Ford’s most powerful documented production Modular V8 in the cited historical record is the supercharged 5.8-liter in the 2013 Shelby GT500, rated at 662 hp. Later Ford specifications document 5.2-liter supercharged Modular applications at 720 hp and 795 hp, but the available figures do not establish a definitive top ten in exact order. The examples below distinguish production-car ratings from crate-engine figures and projections.

What counts as a Ford Modular V8?

This comparison covers Ford’s overhead-cam Modular engine family and high-performance variants derived from the Coyote. It does not rank every Ford V8: the 7.3-liter Megazilla is a separate engine family, even though Ford Performance has announced a projected output above 1,000 hp for Megazilla 2.0.

Horsepower and torque figures below are manufacturer ratings or catalog figures, not comparable dyno results from modified vehicles. The examples are not presented as a definitive ten-place ranking: the available factory documentation establishes notable versions, but not a complete, globally exhaustive top ten in exact order.

How the Shelby GT500’s Modular V8 output climbed

Ford’s historical account shows a steady rise in supercharged Shelby GT500 ratings before the move from 5.4 to 5.8 liters. The 2007 5.4-liter was rated at 500 hp, the 2010 version at 540 hp and the 2011 version at 550 hp. For 2013, the 5.8-liter reached 662 hp.

That progression is a useful comparison within one performance lineage; it is not a guarantee that every model-year or market version is represented, nor does it settle the order of every powerful Modular application.

Why 795 hp and 815 hp should not be treated as interchangeable

Ford’s owner-manual specification page for a supercharged 5.2-liter lists 795 hp at 7,200 rpm and 660 lb-ft at 4,600 rpm. An 815-hp figure also appears in indexed descriptions, but the available documentation does not resolve whether it reflects a different model year, market, or specification. Use Ford’s documented 795-hp figure with that qualification rather than presenting a single universal rating.

Crate-engine figures are a separate comparison

Ford Performance catalog and announcement figures describe engines sold or proposed as crate-engine products, not production-car ratings. They can be useful for builders, but should not be inserted into a list of factory vehicle outputs as though the categories were the same.

Crate engine Aspiration Figure What the figure means
Aluminator 5.2 XS Naturally aspirated 580 hp Catalog rating in Ford Performance’s 2020 catalog. 2020 Ford Performance Parts catalog
Supercharged 5.0L Coyote crate engine Supercharged Projected output above 800 hp; target 615 lb-ft Ford Performance’s 2025 announcement described these as projected crate-engine figures, not a production-car rating. Ford Performance

The supercharged Coyote projection is relevant to Modular-derived builds, but it does not establish an output from a production Ford vehicle. Ford’s projected 1,000-plus-hp Megazilla 2.0 figure is excluded because the 7.3-liter Megazilla is not a Modular V8.

What to compare when choosing a version

  • Application: A Mustang coupe, an F-150 performance truck and a crate engine serve different purposes; peak horsepower alone does not make their ratings directly equivalent.
  • Output type: Keep official production ratings, catalog crate-engine ratings and manufacturer projections in separate categories.
  • Torque and engine speed: Where Ford publishes them, torque and the rpm at which a figure is achieved add useful context to horsepower.
  • Model year and market: Confirm the exact vehicle specification before comparing ratings, especially when multiple figures circulate for a similar engine description.
  • Modified examples: Aftermarket boost, tuning, fuel and dyno methods can produce results that should not be presented as factory output.
