By reported U.S. sales, the Ford Taurus led the passenger-car ranking cited for 1992, while the Toyota Camry topped the car column in a Bureau of Transportation Statistics table for 1998. Those snapshots identify major sellers, but they do not establish a single winner—or a complete annual ranking—for the entire decade.
What “most popular” means here
This comparison uses reported sales as the measure of popularity. Sales rankings do not, by themselves, establish which cars owners preferred, which were most reliable, or which had the greatest cultural or collector significance.
Passenger cars also need to be separated from pickups and other light trucks. A car can lead its category without being the best-selling vehicle overall.
Leading U.S. passenger cars in the cited 1992 ranking
A Federal Register document citing Automotive News’ 1993 Market Data Book lists the following leading U.S. cars for 1992, in rank order:
#1 Best Overall
- Scale: 1/25
- Skill Level: 2 (ages 10 and up)
- Glue assembly, paint required
- Molded in blue and clear with chrome and black vinyl tires
- Ford Taurus
- Honda Accord
- Toyota Camry
- Ford Escort
- Honda Civic
- Chevrolet Lumina
- Chevrolet Cavalier
- Pontiac Grand Am
- Ford Tempo
- Saturn
- Toyota Corolla
- Chevrolet Corsica-Beretta
- Nissan Sentra
- Buick LeSabre
- Cadillac Deville
The Taurus is first in this particular 1992 list. It is evidence of that year’s ranking, not proof that it led every year in the early 1990s. The Federal Register document identifies the ranking’s source as Automotive News.
Leading cars in the 1998 BTS table
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ 1998 table lists the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord as the leading cars. The table’s source line credits Ward’s Communications, Ward’s Motor Vehicle Facts and Figures 1999 (Detroit, 2000).

| Vehicle category | Model | 1998 sales reported in the BTS table |
|---|---|---|
| Car | Toyota Camry | 429,575 |
| Car | Honda Accord | 401,071 |
| Truck | Ford F-Series | 836,758 |
| Truck | Chevrolet C/K Pickup | 538,254 |
The truck figures are shown separately because pickups are not passenger cars. They illustrate why the answer can change when “car” is broadened to mean every kind of vehicle. The figures above are those reported in BTS table 1-19; its underlying source is Ward’s 2000 publication.

The available sources provide a ranked list for 1992 and a model-specific sales table for 1998, not a consistently defined model-by-model ranking for every year from 1990 through 1999. It would therefore overstate the evidence to name one car as the decade’s definitive sales leader or to claim that the Taurus or Camry led every year in its part of the decade.

- Brand: KiNSMART, a trusted name in die-cast vehicle models and toys.
There is also a period-definition issue. BTS table 1-19 says its sales period runs from October 1 of the preceding year through September 30 of the named year, and includes sales that could be matched to corresponding U.S. data. That period should not be treated as interchangeable with calendar-year sales. The table is useful for broader historical context, but it is not a complete annual model ranking. BTS explains the table and its period definition here.

The clearest answer
- For the cited 1992 U.S. car ranking, the Ford Taurus is first, followed by the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.
- In the BTS table for 1998, the Toyota Camry leads the car column, ahead of the Honda Accord.
- Pickups led the separate truck column in 1998, with the Ford F-Series ahead of the Chevrolet C/K Pickup.
- These records identify popular cars at two points in the decade, but do not establish a complete 1990–1999 ranking or one definitive decade-wide winner.
