America’s law-enforcement motorcycle clubs are not one organization with one rulebook. They are separate clubs whose members may include active or retired officers, other public-safety personnel, military veterans, or supporters. Riding and fellowship are common themes in the organizations’ own descriptions; some also emphasize charity and community service. Membership, local chapter availability, and application requirements vary, so prospective members should check with the specific club.
What is a law-enforcement motorcycle club?
“Law-enforcement motorcycle club” is a descriptive label, not a single national organization or uniform membership category. Each club sets its own purpose and eligibility rules. For example, Blue Knights International describes itself as a nonprofit fraternal organization for active and retired law-enforcement officers who enjoy riding. Americas Guardians says it serves law-enforcement and public-safety personnel and military veterans, and welcomes both men and women. Sentinels Motorcycle Club describes a charitable nonprofit that includes officers, veterans, and supporters.
The clubs’ stated activities also differ. Blue Knights highlights riding and fellowship, and reports more than $18.8 million in charitable contributions since it began keeping statistics. Sentinels says it was formed to help officers connect, ride, and serve their communities. Those are the organizations’ own descriptions, not a complete measure of what every chapter does.
How did these clubs begin?
Blue Knights: a Maine club formed in 1974
Blue Knights says officers from the Bangor, Maine, area formed a local club in spring 1974. Its history page recounts the beginnings through the recollections of Chuck Shuman, identified there as the organization’s international president from 1974 to 1975. Shuman wrote that Ed Gallant proposed a motorcycle club for local police to ride together. According to that account, early organizers met, recruited interested officers, wrote bylaws, and organized as a nonprofit. This is the club’s own historical account.

Other examples, with different origins
Sentinels says approximately fifteen officers from Colorado agencies, alongside members of other law-enforcement motorcycle clubs, came together in January 2006. Americas Guardians identifies 2007 as its establishment year. The International Coalition of Law Enforcement Motorcycle Clubs traces its beginnings to an alliance initiated by clubs from Brazil and Chile on September 30, 2015, followed by Puerto Rico and later international expansion. These examples illustrate a varied landscape; they are not an exhaustive list.
Who can join?
Eligibility depends on the particular organization and sometimes on the local chapter. The clubs’ published descriptions illustrate that variation:

- Sentinels: lists officers, veterans, and supporters.
One chapter’s application details should not be treated as a general rule. For example, Blue Knights California 1 describes its own eligibility categories and paperwork, including an application, agency identification, and a recent pay statement, with a sponsor where applicable. Requirements can differ or change. Contact the organization or chapter you are considering for its current criteria and process.
How do these clubs differ from outlaw motorcycle gangs?
The phrase “motorcycle club” does not by itself identify an organization’s purpose or conduct. The U.S. Department of Justice defines outlaw motorcycle gangs as organizations whose members use their clubs as conduits for criminal enterprises. That law-enforcement category is distinct from a club that describes itself as a law-enforcement riding, fraternal, or service organization. A club’s self-description and the DOJ’s characterization of a different group should each be attributed rather than treated as interchangeable labels.
