Those grades describe technology intended to avoid or mitigate a crash—not how well the truck protects occupants once a crash happens.
Here’s how the current IIHS ratings differ across popular large pickups, what the grades do and don’t mean, and why heavy-duty trucks belong in a separate comparison.

Which pickup trucks have the best crash prevention ratings?
There is no single winner across all crash-prevention categories in the current IIHS large-pickup table. The 2026 Toyota Tundra crew cab has an Acceptable rating for its standard pedestrian-prevention system; the 2026 Ford F-150 crew cab and 2027 Ram 1500 crew cab have Good pedestrian-prevention ratings. For vehicle-to-vehicle prevention, the F-150’s optional system is Poor, while the Ram’s standard system is Marginal. IIHS rates the 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab’s standard vehicle-to-vehicle system Acceptable.
These are selected IIHS results, not a complete head-to-head ranking. The table includes different model years, cab styles, system options and test coverage. A blank or “not tested” entry is not evidence of either good or poor performance.

All grades in the table are IIHS ratings. Crashworthiness and headlights are shown to make clear that they are separate dimensions, not components of a single crash-prevention score.
Are automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection standard?
Availability depends on the exact model, cab, trim and system. The IIHS summary identifies the F-150 crew cab’s pedestrian-prevention systems as standard and optional, and identifies its Poor vehicle-to-vehicle 2.0 result as optional. The 2027 Ram 1500 crew cab’s vehicle-to-vehicle system is listed as standard and Marginal, while pedestrian prevention is Good. The Silverado 1500 crew cab’s vehicle-to-vehicle system is listed as standard and Acceptable.

For the Tundra, IIHS lists standard pedestrian prevention as Acceptable and vehicle-to-vehicle prevention as not tested. That does not establish whether the latter system is unavailable. Check the window sticker or equipment list for the specific truck, and confirm that the IIHS rating applies to that configuration; a rating for an optional system does not tell you that every trim includes it.

No. IIHS separates crashworthiness, which measures how a vehicle protects occupants when a crash occurs, from crash avoidance and mitigation, which assesses technology intended to prevent or lessen a collision. Headlights and other equipment are rated separately as well.

That distinction matters in these examples: a Poor moderate-overlap rating for the Silverado or Ram is not a rating of its automatic emergency braking. Likewise, an Acceptable or Good prevention grade does not erase a separate crashworthiness or headlight result. None of these letter grades is a crash probability or a complete verdict on a vehicle’s safety.
What do the IIHS tests measure?
Front crash prevention
For vehicle-to-vehicle prevention, IIHS approaches a passenger-car target, a motorcycle target and an actual semitrailer from behind. The evaluation checks warnings and automatic emergency braking at different speeds and target positions. Pedestrian testing uses dummies crossing or standing in the roadway and measures braking at different speeds, including nighttime scenarios with low- and high-beam headlights.

Crashworthiness
In the small-overlap test, the vehicle travels at 40 mph into a rigid barrier with 25% of its width engaged. In the moderate-overlap test, 40% of the vehicle’s width strikes a deformable barrier at 40 mph, with a driver dummy and a rear-seat dummy. IIHS cautions that small- and moderate-overlap ratings should be compared only among vehicles of similar weight. Other listed ratings can be compared across categories.
How do heavy-duty pickups fit into the ratings?
Class 3 heavy-duty pickups are not interchangeable with the large pickups in IIHS’s passenger-vehicle-style table. IIHS’s commercial-vehicle ratings page lists four Class 3 pickup lines: Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD (2025–26), Ford F-350 (2025), GMC Sierra 3500 (2025–26) and Ram 3500 (2025–27). Its commercial crash-avoidance assessment covers vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian front crash prevention.

In an October 8, 2026 release, IIHS said work vehicles, including heavy-duty pickups, lag passenger vehicles in front crash prevention. The detailed release was not available for verification here, so individual Class 3 model grades and the size of any performance gap cannot be stated. The headline-level finding should not be used to assign a score to a particular truck.
What do IIHS awards tell you?
IIHS’s 2026 Top Safety Pick criteria require Good ratings in small overlap, moderate overlap and side tests; Acceptable- or Good-rated headlights across trims; and an Acceptable or Good standard pedestrian-prevention system. Optional prevention systems must also reach Acceptable or Good. Top Safety Pick+ adds Good pedestrian prevention and at least Acceptable vehicle-to-vehicle 2.0 performance for standard systems, with similar requirements for optional systems.
The 2025 large-pickup award list names three entries: the Rivian R1T as Top Safety Pick, and the Tesla Cybertruck (vehicles built after April 2025 only) and Toyota Tundra as Top Safety Pick+. These are award-list entries for the stated period and qualifications, not a substitute for checking a particular truck’s model year, cab, equipment and individual test ratings.
What about NHTSA’s selected vehicles?
NHTSA lists the 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Ford F-250 Crew Cab among vehicles selected for 5-Star Safety Ratings testing, and selected the F-250 for advanced crash-avoidance technology verification. Selection means testing was planned; it is not a published result, a passing grade or a failing grade.

How to check a specific truck
- Match the model year and cab. A crew-cab result does not automatically apply to an extended cab or another year.
- Separate the test categories. Look at vehicle-to-vehicle prevention, pedestrian prevention, crashworthiness and headlights independently.
- Confirm the system status. Note whether the rated technology is standard or optional, and verify that the truck you are considering has the tested equipment.
- Read “not tested” literally. It signals missing test coverage in that table, not a performance grade or proof the feature is absent.
- Compare crashworthiness ratings carefully. For small- and moderate-overlap tests, compare trucks of similar weight, as IIHS advises.
