Amazon’s car-shopping services are not one worldwide checkout. In the UK, the Škoda showroom lets shoppers browse, check local availability, explore finance and request a test drive before buying from a Škoda retailer. In select U.S. markets, Amazon Autos lets customers complete most purchase steps online, but a participating dealer remains the seller and handles pickup. Those are useful changes to how shoppers find and arrange cars; the available evidence does not establish that they have changed the car industry.
Can you buy a car through Amazon?
Yes, but what “buy through Amazon” means depends on the country. Amazon’s U.S. Autos service supports much of the transaction online, while the UK example covered here—the Škoda showroom on Amazon.co.uk—is a browsing and lead-generation route to a local retailer, not a complete online checkout.

What the UK Škoda showroom does
Škoda said UK customers could use its Amazon.co.uk showroom to browse its model range, check stock at local retailers, explore finance options and request a test drive. The showroom therefore brings product discovery and some planning online, but it does not replace the retailer in the sale.
T3 reported on 29 April 2025 that Škoda was the first European brand on the Amazon.co.uk showroom. That is a launch-era report, not confirmation of today’s live inventory or of any later expansion to other brands. Check the current showroom and retailer listings for availability.

Amazon says its U.S. service lets shoppers browse and compare local inventory, select financing, leasing or full payment, place a deposit and complete most paperwork online before dealership pickup. A dealer remains involved as the seller and pickup location, so Amazon Autos is not a direct-to-consumer Amazon car store.
The service launched with Hyundai in December 2024, following Amazon and Hyundai’s U.S. partnership announcement on 16 November 2023. The earlier announcement described planned features; Amazon’s current explainer is the better guide to the present process.
Availability and local inventory
As of 8 October 2026, Amazon’s explainer says Autos is available in select U.S. markets, with listings from dealers within 75 miles of a shopper’s location. Amazon reports more than 1,000 participating dealers across more than 130 U.S. cities. These are Amazon’s own coverage figures, not an independent count, and location, participating dealers and inventory can change.
Used and certified pre-owned vehicles
Amazon announced an expansion into used and certified pre-owned vehicles on 10 December 2024, initially in Los Angeles, and updated that announcement on 4 August 2025. It described a three-day/300-mile return policy and a minimum 30-day/1,000-mile limited warranty at launch. Those announced terms should not be treated as universal current protections: Amazon says return policies may vary by state. Check the live vehicle listing, applicable state terms and dealer documents before placing a deposit.
Can you still test-drive a car?
In the UK, Škoda explicitly included test-drive requests among the showroom’s launch features, with the retailer handling the next step. For U.S. Amazon Autos, the cited service description centers on online purchase steps and dealership pickup; it does not establish a universal test-drive arrangement. Ask the specific dealer whether a test drive can be scheduled before purchase.

It is a meaningful convenience for comparison and paperwork, particularly in the U.S. service, but “game changer” remains a judgment rather than a demonstrated market outcome. The cited announcements and service pages describe features, dealer participation and expansion; they do not establish changes in market share, buyer behavior, car prices or customer savings. Amazon’s model still depends on dealers, local stock, finance terms and the final handover.

The distinction matters if you are ready to act: UK shoppers using the Škoda showroom should expect to finish through a retailer, while U.S. shoppers in an Amazon Autos market may handle most steps online and collect from the dealer. In either case, confirm the live listing and terms with the retailer before committing.
