Those were plausible strategic choices, not proof of successful execution. The company’s Chapter 11 filing in June 2024 followed a difficult launch; the available records document important risks and setbacks, but do not establish that any single one caused the bankruptcy.
What Fisker got right: six strategic choices that made sense on paper
“Got right” is an analytical lens, not a settled ranking or an official list published by Fisker, a regulator or the bankruptcy court. The records directly establish Fisker’s manufacturing relationship and its stated sales-channel rationale. The other points below describe the logic of those choices, not verified evidence that they produced strong results.
1. It pursued an electric SUV rather than an abstract technology play
The Ocean gave Fisker a defined vehicle around which to organize product development, manufacturing and sales. That is a more concrete commercial proposition than promising a platform or future technology alone. The record cited here does not establish how buyers received the Ocean or how its design compared with rivals, so the strategic focus should not be mistaken for proof of product-market fit.
2. It used contract manufacturing instead of building its own factory network
Fisker contracted with Magna Steyr in 2021 to launch and manufacture the Ocean, as described in Fisker’s 2022 Form 10-K. In principle, outsourcing vehicle production can reduce the capital and time required to build and operate a manufacturing footprint. It also means the automaker depends on a partner for a central part of delivering vehicles.

3. It sought to draw on an established manufacturer’s capabilities
A contract manufacturer can bring existing production expertise and capacity to a new vehicle program. Fisker’s agreement with Magna reflected that approach. The contract documents a relationship, however, not a guarantee of smooth ramp-up, quality, delivery volume or profitability.
4. It concentrated the company’s effort on the Ocean launch
Building a business around a defined vehicle program can focus limited resources on getting that product into production and to customers. This is a strategic rationale rather than a measured result: the cited filings do not establish that concentration alone made the company more efficient or that the Ocean generated enough cash to sustain Fisker.

5. It initially pursued direct sales to retain a customer-facing channel
Direct selling can give a manufacturer more control over how it presents a vehicle and interacts with buyers. Fisker’s later bankruptcy disclosure described a hybrid approach that included direct sales. The cited material does not quantify the channel’s economics or show how well it served customers.
6. It tried adding dealers to reach more markets
In its August 2024 disclosure, Fisker’s debtors said the company adopted a hybrid direct-and-dealer sales approach in hopes of reaching more markets and accelerating Ocean sales. That is the company’s stated rationale, not evidence that the change achieved either aim. Broadening reach through dealers can be useful, but it also adds coordination and partner-dependence to a launch already demanding operational attention.

Four execution risks and setbacks that contributed to the failure
These factors help explain the risks Fisker faced; the cited records do not establish a single, definitive cause of its bankruptcy. In particular, a documented product-safety action is not, by itself, evidence that it caused the company’s insolvency.
1. The asset-light model did not remove manufacturing risk
Contracting out production can avoid the cost of building a factory, but it does not transfer away responsibility for a viable vehicle program, dependable supply and customer delivery. Fisker still depended on Magna to manufacture the Ocean. Magna later reported that the manufacturing agreement was terminated in the third quarter of 2024 in its SEC filing. That later termination underscores the dependence inherent in the arrangement; it does not, on its own, explain the earlier Chapter 11 filing.

2. The sales-channel change added execution demands during a fragile launch
Fisker’s stated goal in combining direct and dealer sales was broader market reach and faster Ocean sales. But shifting or expanding channels requires the company to coordinate sales partners and customer-facing operations while it is also trying to launch and deliver a new vehicle. The disclosure records the strategy and its intended benefits; it does not provide comparable channel results or prove that the change caused the business to fail.
3. The company did not establish a durable path from launch to financial survival
Fisker’s debtors commenced U.S. Chapter 11 cases in June 2024, as recorded in the company’s SEC filing. That filing establishes the bankruptcy event, not a complete causal account of the company’s finances. The materials cited here do not provide enough comparable operating or cash-flow figures to quantify how production, delivered sales or spending contributed. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the launch and commercial model did not prevent Fisker from entering Chapter 11.

4. Safety-related software issues added product and ownership concerns
Two separate NHTSA records concern different issues, and neither should be treated as a finding that every Ocean was affected.
- Brake-module recall: NHTSA’s recall notice for 2023 and 2024 Ocean vehicles identifies a brake-module software issue associated with braking feel and describes an over-the-air software remedy, OS 2.2. This recall record addresses braking feel; it is not the automatic-emergency-braking investigation described below.
- Automatic emergency braking investigation: In May 2024, NHTSA opened preliminary evaluation PE24013 after complaints alleging inadvertent automatic emergency braking in 2023 Ocean vehicles. The opening resume recorded eight complaints and one injury incident at that stage. Those are opening-record counts, not a rate among all Ocean owners or a final finding that every vehicle had a defect.
These records matter to owners and to confidence in a new vehicle program, but the documents cited here do not show that either issue triggered Fisker’s bankruptcy. Owners should check recall status by VIN and seek qualified service guidance; the materials here do not establish current parts availability, service coverage or ongoing software support.

Fisker’s Chapter 11 filing should not be described as an ordinary reorganization that remains open-ended. The case administrator’s case page reports that the court confirmed a joint Chapter 11 plan of liquidation in October 2024. That later milestone is distinct from the June filing and marks a change in the case’s direction.
The lesson: a sensible strategy still needs successful execution
Fisker’s choices offered potential advantages: contract manufacturing could limit factory investment, and combining direct sales with dealers could widen customer reach. Each also introduced dependencies and coordination needs. The record shows that Fisker entered Chapter 11, that Magna’s manufacturing agreement was later terminated, and that regulators documented a recall and opened a separate safety evaluation. It does not establish that one of those facts alone caused the bankruptcy—or that the strategic ideas themselves were inherently unsound.
